Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks In 30 years as a bandleader, Vince Giordanohas become the authority on recreating thesounds of 1920s and ’30s jazz and popularmusic. “I just love the energy of the earlyjazz,” says Giordano. “I wanted to recapturesome of that.” most recently, Vince Giordanoand the Nighthawks won a Grammy for thealbum Boardwalk Empire Vol. 1, music fromthe HBO Original Series CD. Vince and theband are heard and seen on Boardwalk Empire as well as USANetwork series Royal pains.

His bands, their concerts and the recordingshe produces (both live and in studio,) cover works from the jazzand dance bands of the early 1930s to the classic Capitol record-ings of the 1950s. His various orchestras have played arrange-ments recreated from the original scores and also from James’own transcriptions from recordings.

Sunday Afternoon ConcertsBring a lawn chair or blanketand listen to artist-in-resi-dence Suzanne mueller(right) and friends performworks on the patio in the Gar-den of Appreciation by theWalled Garden. ms. muellerhas been an Artist-in-Resi-dence for nine years, present-ing annual series of concertscovering a broad range of periods and styles.

In case of inclement weather, concerts are held in the Red Ball-room. Concerts are free with admission.

Cross Island Trio Suzanne mueller kicks off her 9th season of concerts at theGardens with a Cross Island concert of duets (clarinet/celloand cello/piano), solos, and trios, featuring pianist ElinorAbrams Zayas and clarinetist Thomas piercy. Repertoire willinclude classic favorites and new discoveries spanning centuriesand styles, with composers including Canary Burton, paul Car-lon, Enrique Granados, Art Lillard, Astor piazzolla, RickSowash, paul Schonfield, Long Island's own Barbara Sternberg,and, of course, a free improv! There will be a drawing for a copyof Cross Island’s 2011 album Quiet Strength.

HungrytownA Old Westbury Gardens favorite, the husband and wife duo ofRebecca Hall and Ken Anderson return for another program oforiginal folk music, accompanied by the bass lines, descants,and fiddling of the cellist Suzanne mueller, who will also per-form a couple of solos. concert,open to allin atten-dance, for acopy of"Hungry-town's CD,"Every For-gottenThing."

Cello and ReedFeaturing Composer's Voice "15 minutes of Fame"

Clarinetist Thomas piercy and cellist Suzanne mueller, arepleased to be opening this concert with 15 one-minute worksselected competitively from among 51 submissions written es-pecially for the occasion and inspired by the painting "GivernyRevisited," by Raisy Derzie. There will also be music by Wil-helm Friedrich Bach, Barbara Sternberg Bach (no relation) BelaBartok, Ludwig Beethoven, Charlie Chaplin (the one andonly!), matt Doran, Leopold mozart, Rick Sowash, and others.There will be a drawing for a Thomas piercy CD at the end ofthe concert, open to all in attendance.

Cambiata Flute and Cello Duowith special guest guitarist mark mcCarron

Flutist pamela Sklar was a big hit when she performed on theseries for the first time last year, as a guest on the Cello & Reedsconcert. This year, she returns as half of the Cambiata Flute andCello Duo, with cellist Suzanne mueller, for a concert of solos,duet - flute/cello, cello/guitar, and flute/guitar - and trios, to-gether with guest guitarist mark mcCarron. Composers will in-clude Johann Sebastian Bach, Barbara Bach Sternberg (norelation), Roger Blanc, Egberto Gismonte, Laurel Zucker, andpamela herself, and others, and there will also be a lovely sam-pling of jazz standards. A copy of pamela's new CD, "A NativeAmerican-Jazz Tribute," will be given away in a drawing, andthe audience will be treated to a solo from it during the con-cert.
