A comprehensive list of works by Western European Masters that are housed in art galleries, museums and universities as well as in the properties of the National Trust in the United

Kingdom. Dates from early Renaissance up to the beginning of the 19th century.

The book is divided into two main sections. In the first the pictures are listed with their full titles under the artists' names which are indexed alphabetically. The dates of birth and death or when the painters were active are given. Inclu ded also are the many pictures which cannot be displayed through lack of space and are therefore kept in reserve. The catalog or inventory number of each picture is given, as is a reference to any available reproduction. An extensive

bibliography at the end of the book includes all the publi cations cited and serves as a cross reference.

The second part of the book is an index of locations. Towns are listed in alphabetical order with the name of each

gallery. The pictures are then listed according to the national school of the artist. Thus the reader may see at a glance the extent of all collections. Brief histories of the collections and the origins of galleries are included together with notes on individual pictures.

With the pound so low, we suggest you buy the item in

England in pounds and not at 81 Adams Drive, Totowa, NJ 07512.

Historie Preservation Plans: An Annotated Bibliography. Washington, D.C., National Trust for Historie Preser vation: Preservation Press, 1976. $3.00 42p. ISBN 0-89133-038

This bibliography is a representative sampling of some of the

plans of the nation's largest cities to its smallest towns, which are drawing up proposals to save their irreplaceable old

buildings from destruction. The bibliography lists 91 pro posals to preserve historic areas, historic waterfronts, eth

nically oriented neighborhoods and areas affected by high ways. The plans are grouped according to area population so that planners in one area can see what planners in another area of similar size have proposed. The plans are further divided into those drawn up for districts and those proposed for entire municipalities. Regional and state plans also are included.

This 42-page bibliography is a project of the National Trust Office of Preservation Services. The bibliography should assist local, county, regional and state governments in their efforts to include a historic plan element in their

comprehensive plans and to integrate the goals of historic

preservation into the total planning process. Recommended for architectural libraries. This volume

can be ordered for $3.00 plus 50 cents postage from the Preservation Bookshop, 740 Jackson Place, N.W., Washing ton, DC 20006.
