Oh, so you want to graduate and get a job?
Cool! Where are you going to start?
Lecture Outcomes for 1/6/16
1. Identify skills you have gained while in college or partaking in extra-curricular activities
2. Establish your personal philosophy/mission statement/purpose
3. Add tools to your toolbox for the job search process
Pathways to Careers• Know yourself– What is your purpose?– What are your skills?– What do you want an employer to know about you?
• Know the industry you want to go into – What are employers looking for?– How do you relate your skills and strengths to
specific job positions?– How have your experiences prepared you for this
job= transferable skills
You have more skills than you think!
• Educational skills- individual course and program learning outcomes
• Experiential Skills- Internships, job shadows, informational interviews, student work experiences, leadership experiences– ALL have transferable skills– Haven’t had an internship or job shadow yet? GET ON IT- one
term left!• Life skills- paying bills on time, budgeting, making hard
decisions, living with multiple non-family members
– Activity #1- Identify your skills
Program Learning Outcomes
• Each of your majors has a set outline of learning outcomes that graduates will leave OSU with
• Learning Outcomes Skills
• Activity #2 – Go through your program learning outcomes and identify
the skills within. Circle or highlight skills – The language used in your program’s learning outcomes
is transferable language you can use in a resume, cover letter or interview
What will set you apart from the other people in this room, graduating from OSU, graduating
nation wide?• You ability to identify your purpose, skills, interests,
your ability to talk about yourself in a professional manner
• Activity #3– Platform Statement/Personal Mission
Statement/Statement of Purpose – Pick a partner and recite your statement to them
Future Advice
• Social Media– Make profiles on all accounts reflect who you are in
a positive and professional way• Take down photos of beer bonging or that one Halloween
costume • If you do not have a LinkedIn yet- get one!
• Letters of Recommendation – Have you made a connection to anyone at OSU yet?
You will need professional references which means it is on YOU to network with your professors
