On 20 January we welcomed the Governor of WA and new Foodbank Patron Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO to see our new home. Open for just 15 days, Her Excellency was among the first guests to see our new operations. We look forward to working with the Governor and Government House who have been great supporters of Foodbank WA over the years.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

What a busy and exciting time it has been at Foodbank since our last newsletter!

As planned, we opened the doors to the new Foodbank WA Centre for Hunger Relief on Monday 5 January after an amazing effort by our staff and volunteers over the Christmas/ New Year break. As the sun came up on 27 December we were already moving the more than 700 pallets from Welshpool to our new home at 23 Abbott Road, Perth Airport.

While we have only moved 9km from our home of 12 years, the journey to plan, fund and build Australia’s largest purpose-built Foodbank was a long one. It took more than seven years of devotion and dedication from many people. A driving force was former Chairman Denis Ryan OAM who helped secure the land and also started discussions with the then new Premier Colin Barnett.

So it was fitting that on Friday 1 May both Denis and a number of former Board and committee members could join us as the Premier officially opened our new centre.

It was also great to be joined by our key funding partners in the State Government, Lotterywest, BHP Billiton and Perth Airport along with our architects Doepel Marsh, project managers Savills and our builders ADCO Constructions.

With 6500 square metres, it gives us almost four times more space than we had at Welshpool. In addition to increased

food storage capacity, we added a number of new features including a commercially equipped kitchen, a nutrition education centre and a range of meeting and seminar rooms that we hope to share with our agency partners and other community groups.

Almost 200 people attended the opening ceremony and it was a truly wonderful celebration. It was pleasing to see our kitchen in action, with new Kitchen Manager Grant Longman and a team from the Boronia Women’s Pre-Release Centre providing all the catering.

But now it’s on with the job as we continue to experience rising demand for food relief across all of our branches.

Thankfully our new facilties mean we can store and distribute more food more efficiently than ever before. The challenge remains to source enough food to meet demand. This financial year, we have purchased over $200,000 of everyday pantry staples, a first in Foodbank’s history. Relying on donated and surplus products will no longer be enough and we anticipate having to continue to regularly purchase food in the years ahead.

Welcome to our New Patron

It has been a pleasure over the past few months to welcome so many of our friends and supporters to our new home. With our kitchen we are now able to provide on site catering for meetings and seminars. We have already hosted several Rotary and Lions Clubs for dinners and breakfasts and corporate groups including the Board from the West Coast Eagles. All the fees collected help support our vital food relief efforts.

As ever, fundraising remains a priority for Foodbank. We do not receive operational support from government and rely on the donations of businesses and private donors to help fund our food purchases, transport and considerable overheads.

I would like to thank CEO Diedre Wilmot and the Charity of the Year Committee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA who have adopted Foodbank as their charity partner for 2015.

Thanks also to Janet Pyke and her merry potters who have started Empty Bowls Perth, a fundraising idea from the USA that helps raise thousands of dollars and awareness that there are too many people in our community struggling to put food on the table. I hope you can join us for the inaugural event on Sunday 21 June.

And finally, we remain indebted to our wonderful volunteers. We have just celebrated National Volunteer Week and had nine new people complete 10 years of service. We’ve also had more than 20 corporate groups through in the past six months. Volunteering is a key to keeping Foodbanks all over the world sustainable so we can devote our resources to feeding people and families in need.

Sod turns on new Foodbank GeraldtonOn 17 March, funders of the new Foodbank Geraldton joined local Branch Manager Pat Hodges in turning sod on land in Webberton that will be home to our much needed new distribution and education centre. Member for the Agricultural Region Hon. Paul Brown MLC, representing the Minister for Regional Development, joined Foodbank, the City of Greater Geraldton, the Mid West Development Commission and Lotterywest representatives to celebrate the occasion.

Despite a short delay, construction will soon be underway, with the opening expected in early 2016.

We’re officially open – (L to R) CEO Perth Airports Brad Geatches, Foodbank WA Chair Peter Mansell, Premier Colin Barnett, BHP Billiton President Iron Ore Jimmy Wilson and CEO Lotterywest Paul Andrew.

Bankwest and Raine Square joined forces again for their annual Carry a Can Day on Friday 12 December. It was a bright sunny day which saw many city workers drop in cans or coins. We even had a few special guests drop in including Premier Colin Barnett, Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, WCE Captain and Foodbank Ambassador Shannon Hurn and Kelly Ramsay from

MKR. This year’s event raised enough in food and cash donations to create 6382 meals! Thanks to Starlight Hotel Choir and all the volunteers from Bankwest who made it such a great day.

Carry a Can – Over 6000 meals raised

The third year into our partnership with the Rotary Club of Heirisson saw 2000 festive hampers provided to families in need for Christmas 2014. A record number of donations was received, totalling 2277 hampers. The additional money was used towards the purchase of key pantry staples.

Give a Feed was kindly supported by City Toyota, Torque Productions, ALYKA, Visy and Bankwest. Special thanks to Brewmart, Cummins, CCI Kalgoorlie, Leap Consulting and Medirecruit and all our donors.

Cans for a CauseThe rain and wind couldn’t dampen the spirits of the OWLS and West Coast Eagles fans who came out once again this year to support Cans for a Cause on 16 May. The event raised the equivalent of 7290 meals! Special thanks to everyone at West Coast, Budget Forklifts, the WAFC, Quality Picked Produce and the lovely volunteers from Crown Perth who also braved the weather

to make it another successful day.

Willis on fire – hots up with tex mexThe WA office of Willis Australia put on another stellar event with 16 teams from the insurance industry competing in the fourth BBQ cook off for Foodbank. The Tex Mex theme matched the hot March day with a little too much chilli for some! Special thanks to the celebrity judges Chloe James and Kelly Ramsay who proved much more generous than on air MKR judges! Bribes still abounded as teams fought to take home the coveted ‘Best BBQ’ prize. Congratulations and thanks to Willis and everyone who attended. A record of more than $20,000 was raised this year.

Sensational new bHP billiton Training kitchen Learning about healthy food and cooking with Foodbank’s Food Sensations® nutrition education program has become a whole lot more fun and hands-on with six cooking stations, expanded training rooms and AV facilities.

The South Metropolitan Population Health Unit’s Aboriginal Health team were the first to experience the new BHP Billiton Training Kitchen. The Food Sensations team hosted the group in February, where they learned different ways of delivering nutrition information as well as participating in a cooking workshop and preparing a banquet of healthy dishes to eat.

North Lake Senior Campus, Cyril Jackson Senior Campus, Armadale Senior High School and Westfield Park Primary School are just some of the schools that have also had an on-site Foodbank experience.

All schools registered for the School Breakfast Program have an opportunity to bring a class out to Foodbank. A Food Sensations excursion for schools combines a tour of Foodbank’s new Centre for Hunger Relief, as well as an interactive cooking and education session with our qualified nutritionists.

A new feature at Foodbank WA is a social kitchen that will allow us to turn surplus produce or produce with a very short shelf life into ready-made frozen meals.

A pilot for the service has now commenced, with the kitchen set to operate three days and produce 1100 meals a week to begin. These meals will in the first instance be distributed via our agencies, but over time will be directed where they are needed most: potentially to support homeless and other shelters and seniors.

New Kitchen Manager Grant Longman has been impressing all with his culinary skills and ability to create amazing menus from food sourced from Foodbank donations. On site catering for meetings and seminars along with hosting clubs including Rotary, Lions and others will provide funds that can be re-directed into the operating costs of the kitchen.

We are now looking for individual volunteers and corporate groups to staff our kitchen and help produce meals. Have fun, learn new cooking skills and recipes and create meals that will help feed people and families in need.

To book a function or volunteer please find more details on our website or call the office on 9258 9277.

Saying ‘thanks’ to our volunteersEach day the tireless work of volunteers ensures Foodbank can continue to provide support for families in need.

During May we celebrated the valuable contribution of our amazing volunteers with a series of breakfast events in each region.

Our regional branches were once again well looked after by their local Dome Café, while our Perth volunteers shared their

breakfast with Foodbank WA’s Patron and the Governor of Western Australia, Her Excellency Kerry Sanderson AO at Bankwest’s head at Raine Square.

Thanks to our generous National Volunteer Week partners, Bankwest and Herbert Smith Freehills, for their ongoing support of Foodbank and for their recognition of the important role volunteers play in the fight against hunger in Western Australia.
