OFFICE ROMANCE STILL BLOSSOMSBy Dale Dauten

II was sitting in the office of a high-ranking executive of a Fortune 100 company, a charming and charismatic man in his forties, when in bounced one of his assis-tants, a young woman with a stack of papers and a smile. The exec looked up and said, "Wow, that’s a beautiful dress." Her smile widened and she started to respond but the executive added quickly, almost frantically, "Oh, no, no… I'm so sorry. I keep forgetting. Please ignore that. Sorry. Sorry." She shrugged and thanked him anyway, then left, looking slightly deated.

He explained to me that he’d been to a Human Resources seminar where all em-ployees were taught to never… with stress on never… mention anything about the appearance of a coworker of the opposite sex.

Yet, despite the work of HR execs everywhere, office romances still blossom and always will. And today I get to pass along a nice love story about a couple here at The Resort.

We all know Rhonda keeps an eagle-eye on The Resort, but she recently got a bird’s-eye view as the agpole was being serviced.

First, the office part, then the romance part…

JJeff Christensen works for one of those companies that just about nobody knows exists. In his case, it’s a company that takes building materials from the corporations that produce them, and prepares each item to go to the big retailers. Say you walk into a Home Depot in Texas to shop for a storage shed or a portable building, odds are what you're looking at has been handled by Jeff and his colleagues.

TThat company is in Texas, where Jeff spent most of his life.

After graduating from Texas A&M, he started out following his dad's footsteps and went to work for an auto dealership, selling Chevrolets. (Asked if he was good at it, he shrugged and said, "I wasn't the best." But he smiled and added, "But I won a sales contest and got a week in the Bahamas.") He then went to work for the old Southwestern Bell, left to open his own swimming pool business, then ended up in the distribution business.

AAnd that brings us to the office romance, or more accurately, the cross-country inter-office romance…

Jeff says, "My wife had passed… leukemia… and Ann was divorced." By then,"We had so many phone calls that we got to the point where we weren't just talking business anymore, we got to the point where we were comfortable talking about life."

Eventually, Jeff invited Ann to visit him in Texas. She accepted and they discovered a shared passion for country-western music and dancing.

Ann Foley was at work at a lumber company near Vancouver in British Columbia. Her job was to get the company’s products to distributors in the U.S. and Canada. One of those distributors was in Texas… and yes, the one where Jeff worked. So Ann was his customer and they’d gotten to know each other on the phone over the course of a cocouple of years before Jeff went to Vancouver on a business trip and they met in person for the rst time.

Jeff fell for Ann, and Ann fell for Jeff and for Texas, and the couple married in 2011 in Vegas. A few years later, they bought a vacation home at The Resort. (Ann's brother and sister had been coming to The Resort for years.) Jeff decided to retire in 2016, and they agreed to sell their house in Texas and move in fulltime at The Resort.

BBut Jeff's retirement didn't take. His replacement didn't work out and the company asked him to keep working on any terms he chose. So Jeff still spends several hours a day on the phone, keeping those storage sheds and other products going into the retailers.

That still leaves him time to enjoy time with Ann and to join in with activities of The Resort. Look for Jeff and Ann out on the dance oor.

DOUG'S PROGRESS REPORT FOR OCTOBERBy Dale Dauten

Last week I asked Doug how October had been going. He replied, "Twenty-ve days in a row—that's all you need to know." In other words, he’s been busy hooking up residents and making sure everything is rst-rate, and doing it all month. And no rest for Doug—the next couple of months his calendar looks even fuller.

IIf you haven’t already been hooked up, please make sure you’re on Doug’s schedule: just let the Front Desk know when you’re arriving and they’ll get you on his calendar. If you haven’t been in the park, here’s why Doug is keeping busy…

The HD TV has been working for a while now and getting boffo reviews. As for the new internet system, Doug has completed the infrastructure, which means that the new internet service is being tested and nalized.

DDoug reports that he's initiated beta testing in both parks and that he will soon begin connecting more units. In order to make the process as efficient as possible…

Connections to the new high-speed internet will be staggered. Look for notices in your mailbox. That notice will tell you when you can get your modem registered to work with the new system and you can begin to enjoy the new internet service.
