The hypothetical clients in this studio project were two Georgia Tech colleagues who wanted to build a house together in the neighborhood of Home Park which is near the college campus. The lot chosen was a long, narrow corner lot. The typical constraints of setbacks were ob-served as well as height. The neighborhood consists of low, one and a half to two story dwellings of traditional character. While the style of the new house would be modern, it needed to blend in scale and pro-portion with the rest of the neighborhood. The programmatic require-ments put more constraints on the design. One of the clients was a lit-erature professor and poet who required his own personal workspace with plenty of room for his large collection of books. In addition, he was an avid swimmer and needed a lap pool to which he had easy and direct access. The other client was an astrophysicist who needed a lab with access to the sky. She enjoyed the outdoors but did not want to be overly exposed to the neighbors. Together they enjoyed throwing large parties, especially outside, and needed ample entertaining space. I was limited to two thousand square feet to accomplish the program.

ASTRO-PHYSICISTPOET

I created two bars in which the bottom one housed the com-mon space and the upper one accommodated the private

They slid away from each creating upper and lower outdoor spaces. The upper outdoor space was given privacy by cre-ating a pergola that would be surrounded by vegetation.

In order to support the cantilever, I connected the up-per level to the ground with more private space.

There were two vertical circulation points in the house. One was part of the common space, and the other was part of the private space.

Since the Poet was in need of direct access to the pool, I gave him the lower private space which connected to his bed-room above. The Astrophysicist needed access to the sky, so her lab was on the upper level and had operable skylights.
