REV IT UP Why Do People Decide To Attend Church?

What is the main event in Christian churches each week? For most, the main event each week is worship.

Why do folks go to worship? Is it because of their heartfelt gratitude and love for Jesus Christ, for all that He has

done in their lives, that folks want to worship their Savior, Lord, creator and friend? Or is it primarily because one

views’ worship as Christian obligation and duty, something they have to do? According to recent research by the

Alban Institute, a significant number of Christians go to worship simply because of duty or obligation. Yes, the Lord

God Almighty expects us to worship Him. But, I believe God desires our worship each week out of a sense of loving

gratitude and joy! Worship is to be a uniquely special time to experience the transforming presence of our Lord

through the power of the Holy Spirit. If worship is experienced as a weekly chore, something isn’t quite right spiritual-

ly.

I want to share a good quote from Rick Barger (Alban Institute), in his work “A New And Right Spirit: Creat-

ing An Authentic Church In A Consumer Culture,” regarding worship: “In an authentic church, worship is not a pro-

gram….it is the essential and purest witness of the church. It is the primal expression of its being. It is what the

church does. The event itself is transformational. Because the Gospel happens when the church gathers, the com-

munity and individuals are changed. God goes to work on them. As Paul writes in Romans 1:16, the Gospel is God’s

power (translated from “dunamis” from which we get the word dynamite) to effect salvation. When salvation is under-

stood in its fullest sense, not just to refer to one’s hope beyond death but to a change in one’s present state of being,

the Gospel and thus worship are transformational in the here and now.

By “being saved” we are set free from whatever enslaves us. We are given space from whatever threatens

us. We are made whole. Our spirits are healed. Cynicism gives way to hope. Doubt gives way to faith. Hatred and

bitterness are transformed into love. Fear is transformed into faith. Cowardice gives way to courage. Theologically

speaking, when the Gospel happens to us, we are grasped by God’s eschatological future. Nothing has changed but

everything has changed. All is right. Wow! That sounds great to me, what do you think? What is worship for you?

Or, why do you choose not to go to church? Life’s true meaning and purpose can be found in Jesus Christ. If you

seek transformation in your life by the One who gave you life in the first place, why not begin with worship? Seek the

Lord’s presence while He may be found, through worship grounded in the Gospel that’s Dynamite!

Luminaries 2018

The South Brown County Ministerial Association extends an

invitation to you and our church to attend the 28th annual Horton,

Kansas, Christmas Luminaries, on Sunday, December 2, 2018, from

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Luminaries transform ten city blocks into living,

dramatic scenes of the life of Christ. Men, women, and children of the

Ministerial Association Churches take their places as Bible characters

in a setting of live animals, colorful props, costumes and music. The

Bible-times atmosphere is enhanced by 1300 glowing candles

(luminaries) outlining the route from scene to scene. The Luminaries

make a great family event or an outing for youth groups, Sunday School classes, Sen-

ior Citizen groups and others. Everyone is invited to fill their cars and drive through. A

free will donation may be dropped in a receptacle at the end of the route to support the

South Brown County Ministerial Association benevolence outreach. In case of inclem-

ent weather due to rain or ice, the event may be cancelled. People who are traveling

from a distance are advised to call the Horton Methodist Church, 785-486-2349, if the

weather is questionable. For additional information, contact Theola Carter, First Baptist

Church, Horton, Kan., 785-486-3337.
