A Note From Billy

To some, it’s just a theatre—a place to take your kids once a year to revel in Christmas cheer. To others, it’s everything—an institution upon which their lives are based. To me, it’s a place that absolutely changed my life. Fifteen years ago, I was a full-time student with a fledgling acting and music career. One show at Omaha Community Playhouse changed all of that.

Sixteen years ago, I had a show that needed an audience. For 15 years, Omaha Community Playhouse provided a venue and nurtured and developed what is now a nationally-touring show. I had a dream for a show that was beyond what anyone thought was possible. Omaha Community Playhouse took a chance and again changed the course of a life. And this is just my story. EVERYONE who has ever stepped foot in OCP has a similar story. Musicians, ushers, volunteers, apprentices, directors and guest artists could all tell a story about how life-changing this place really is. Supporting OCP is crucial and vital to not only the Omaha arts community, but to the Omaha community as a whole. Support for this institution changes lives.

Jay Hanson Vocals/Lead Guitar/HarmonicaJay Hanson returns to OCP after last appearing in Once as Guy (Mary Peckham Award) and Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience (2019). He also composed music for OCP’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Grounded. Jay has been creating professionally for over 20 years, having worked in the recording studio with artists ranging from Snoop Dogg to Larry the Cable Guy and clients including National Public Radio, ESPN and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”—Jay has shared performances with music notables such as Hootie and the Blowfish, Cake, Taylor Dayne and David Lee Roth. He has also lent his voice-over, singing and script supervising talents to a number of DIC Entertainment’s cartoon series, including Strawberry Shortcake, DinoSquad and Horseland. “For Campbell, my 11-year-old daughter.”

Billy McGuigan Vocals/Guitar/Keys Billy McGuigan is an internationally-recognized headliner and performer based out of Omaha, NE. Since his breakthrough role as Buddy Holly in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story at the Omaha Community Playhouse in 2002, Billy has toured non-stop worldwide. In addition to creating Yesterday and Today, Billy also wrote, produced and directed several other nationally touring shows including: Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience, She Rocks, Don’t Stop Me Now: A Celebration of Rock Musicals and Pop Rock Orchestra. In the fall of 2020, Billy will release his ambitious solo original project, billymcguiganTOGETHER. A collection of songs written and recorded alone in his garage during the 2020 quarantine. So many to thank! Kate, Cartney and Ciaran for their love and inspiration. My brothers for their talent and for always being here. Cast Bios

Matthew McGuigan Vocals/BassA man of few words, Matthew is more than excited to be performing with Rave On Productions. Matthew is a graduate of Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida. Previously he has music directed Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell and is currently the music director for all of Rave On Productions shows including Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience, Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience, Tara Vaughan’s She Rocks and Don’t Stop Me Now: A Celebration of Rock Musicals. When he’s not performing with Rave On Productions he is the other half to the band Moses Prey. They have released a full-length album (A Paper Moon) and 2 EP’s (The Martyr and Breystory). Matthew has been playing music for over 27 years and couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this production. He dedicates his performance to his son, Lennon, to his fiancé, Julia, and to the memory of his late father, Bill.

Favorite Beatles Song: “Come Together.” It’s the quintessential Beatles song. John’s roaring vocals, Paul’s iconic bass line, George’s smooth guitar and Ringo’s stomping drums—perfection.

Ryan McGuigan Vocals/Acoustic GuitarRyan McGuigan would first like to take this opportunity to say how much he enjoys getting to ROCK to the greatest music of all time with his brothers Billy and Matthew. He is a graduate of the Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St Petersburg, Florida. Some of his favorite past roles include Joey in Tony n Tina’s Wedding, Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and a Theatre Arts Guild award-winning portrayal of Buddy in The Last Session. When Ryan isn’t performing with Yesterday and Today, he tag teams with his brother Matthew in the Power Pop Rock band Moses Prey. Ryan would like to dedicate his performance to Mary, Harry, Josie and Jackie.

Larell WareDrumsLarell Ware was born and raised in Philadelphia before moving to Omaha, Nebraska to study percussion. Larell’s 25 years of experience landed him the opportunity to tour internationally with several artists and is featured on studio recordings with internationally recognized musicians. Most recently Larell was the drummer for NBC’s The Voices Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal where he performed a 27-city European tour with a live album release in Brussels, Belgium.

Favorite Beatles Song: “Penny Lane.” To me the song is a story of origin. Remembering and honoring where you come from. Recognizing that home/birthplace is what helps make you who you are. And to revisit in person or in memory bring joy in its nostalgia.

A NOTE TO OUR PATRONSBilly McGuigan has been a friend of the Playhouse for a long time. His first appearance on a Playhouse stage was in the 1990s and since he has become a mainstay.

But his commitment to and love for the Playhouse was never more evident than it was this summer. After we were forced to shut our doors due to COVID-19 in March, Billy and his team stepped up and collaborated with the OCP staff to produce drive-in shows in our parking lot. He and his band played in the blazing sun and the blistering heat in order to continue to bring music to the Omaha community. He brought us the music of Buddy Holly in June, hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s in August and his group was even a part of our September drive-in show featuring the most popular songs from a plethora of rock musicals.

These drive-in shows were a lifeline for the Playhouse. Being able to continue bringing entertainment to the community renewed our purpose and boosted our morale during a very challenging time. The staff also stepped up in a major way. Playhouse staff members parked cars, cleaned bathrooms, handed out masks, wiped down railings and set up and broke down the show on a nightly basis. I am forever grateful to Billy and his team and to our amazing staff for their creativity and perseverance. And I am forever grateful to the community, including all of you, who have supported us. While these times are difficult, I am inspired by the innovation and creativity that has emerged. Now we will know just what to do during the next global pandemic. :)
