Growth momentum could weaken in the second half Although fund managers are now more optimistic about the economy compared to 6 months ago, they are concerned that the momentum could ease in the coming months as government stimulus wanes.

The uncertain prospects for the global economy in the second half coupled with other headwinds are likely to keep investors jittery.

Lion Global Investors cautions that markets are likely to remain volatile until such a time as economic data becomes clearer, especially with respect to U.S. employment trends and credit worthiness among European markets.

Allianz Global Investors observes that the leading indicators have started to roll over not only in developed but also emerging markets.

Fidelity International says it recently turned more cautious as the global inventory rebuild is in an advanced stage and leading indicators are either at peak readings or rolling over.

for the second half of this year.

silVer lininG seen in u.s. and emerGinG market economiesDespite concerns about Europe, some fund managers are more positive about the U.S. economy and emerging markets.

Blackrock Investment Management for example, says that the recovery in the U.S. and emerging markets is playing out much better than expected, with the strong private sector performances sustaining the recovery.

Templeton Asset Management is also optimistic that the recovery in emerging markets is sustainable in view of their strong fundamentals.

still PositiVe on equities in the medium to lonG termDespite the recent turbulent stock markets, most fund managers stay positive in their outlook for equities in the medium to long term, making it their preferred asset class at this point.

UBS Global Asset Management says that although equity markets have rallied last year, both developed and emerging market equities are still attractive from a valuation perspective.

Schroder Investment Management sees the prolonged period of low interest rates and the recovery in corporate profits over the coming months as bearing positive effects for equity markets.

Henderson Global Investors is also positive here because investors are still relatively cautious and underexposed to equities. It also sees inflation rising in the medium term, which should favour corporate earnings.

Deutsche Asset Management however, cautions that current equity returns may not be as strong as last year, and views dividends as an important part of investment returns.

Vasu says q: are you waiting in vain? does the buy & hold strategy still makes sense?

The extreme volatility in global stock markets over the past 3 years has raised questions about the wisdom of a buy & hold investment strategy, epitomised by one of the world’s best investors, Warren Buffett.

Despite market uncertainties, we think that there is still a role for strategic or long term investments in one’s portfolio. Time increases the probability of achieving better returns, but it is not a guarantee. Even if you start investing with a long term view of 5 years, it does not mean that you have to stay invested for the full period.

This is where many investors get it wrong with the buy & hold strategy. They set off investing for the long term, with a certain return in mind, but they do not take profit once their target is achieved as they get overcome by greed and seek more gains.

In other words, buy & hold until your investment meets your targeted return. Once your target is met, be disciplined about selling and locking in your profit. If you do not, it could wither away if markets experience a downturn subsequently.

equity markets faVoured By fund manaGers Lion Global is positive on Asia ex-Japan markets for the long term, given the sound economic foundation and wealth creation throughout the region.

Aberdeen Asset Management also favours Asia and emerging markets because it believes in the long-run structural improvement of emerging economies and the performance of their markets.

ING Investment Management prefers emerging markets as it sees its growth as being the highest and most sustainable. Also, it says that sovereign debt worries are mainly from developed markets and less of a concern in emerging markets.

Phillip Capital Management said it is becoming increasingly bullish on Japan, which is attractively valued after ‘two lost decades’. Japan is also taking advantage of strong growth in emerging markets, especially in infrastructure spending.

asian markets PreferredInterestingly, many fund managers are positive on Chinese equities, which have corrected sharply during the first half of 2010, despite market concerns about China.

BNP Paribas Investment Partners sees the Chinese market bottoming and said that it may exit its consolidation phase in the coming months.

First State Investments says that China offers investment opportunities in a number of growth companies with strong balance sheets and a good franchise.

Elsewhere, Aviva Investors favours trade-oriented markets like Singapore and Taiwan which also offers significant cyclical consumer exposure.

Prudential is positive on South Korea due to its relative valuations, competitive currency and global cyclical leverage. It is also positive on Indonesia due to the country’s structural economic improvements.

selectiVe oPPortunities seen in Bond marketsAlthough most fund managers seem to prefer equities and riskier assets at this point, some of them see selective opportunities in bond markets especially Asian credits and high-yield corporate bonds.

mixed outlook for commodities Fund managers offer a mixed outlook for commodity markets in the short term. Some are positive on base metals and precious metals like gold due to strong demand, while others are cautious about agricultural commodities and oil, due to supply factors.

the real deal Overall, while fund managers are positive on equities and see selective opportunities in other areas, they warn investors not to throw caution to the wind. Periodic investments and diversification are strategies for investors to consider, especially in the current volatile markets.

Q: How much has HDB home prices appreciated since mid 2009? CHOR HOON: according to hDB’s price index, average hDB resale prices have increased by 10.6% between Q3 2009 to Q1 2010, with 3-room flats seeing a steeper increase of 13% compared to 9 – 11% for bigger flats.

EUGENE: since mid 2009, hDB home prices have appreciated by about 11% in general.

Q: What is the historical trend of Cash Over Valuation (COV)?CHOR HOON: since Q2 2009, the CoV has been on the uptrend. the overall median CoV was only s$3,000 in Q2 2009 and has since risen 8-fold in the second half of 2009 to s$24,000. the increase slowed down significantly in Q1 this year with the median CoV stabilising at s$25,000.

EUGENE: CoV has stabilised around the current median of s$22,000 for 3-room resale flats, s$25,000 for 4-room; s$28,000 for 5-room; and s$30,000 for executive flats.

Q: Which areas of Singapore do HDB flats command the highest resale value?

EUGENE: hDB flats that are located nearest to town command the highest resale value like Queenstown and Bukit merah. marine Parade also commands a premium because of the sea view and offers the ‘east Coast lifestyle’.

Q: What is the market outlook on rental demand for HDB flats? CHOR HOON: Rental demand from permanent residents, foreign workers and students will continue to be strong with the economy doing well. Plus with more expatriates earning local pay packages now, their demand rises as they now have a reduced housing budget.EUGENE: it is expected to increase as the economy sees positive growth and many companies are increasing their headcount. For employees with a monthly rental budget of s$3,000 and below, a hDB flat is their only option.

Q: Are the value of HDB flats less susceptible to property market cycles? CHOR HOON: as hDB flats are bought mainly for owner-occupation, the price changes are less volatile than private properties. hDB resale prices fell by just 0.8% in Q1 2009, while private property prices plunged by 14%. and since the 2009 lows, we see prices of private residences increasing by 31% compared to a more modest 12% for hDB resale flats.

EUGENE: Purchasers of hDB flats are owner occupiers unlike private properties that may be bought for investment or speculative reasons. as such, hDB resale prices are a factor of actual demand and supply, and will not follow the private property market cycle.

The Wheel of lifeLive life the way you want with peace of mind and adequate protection for you and your loved ones.

Do you know of someone who is ill and the family is burdened with hefty medical bills? Have you ever wondered how your loved ones are going to cope financially should anything happen to you?

Buying insurance for yourself or your family is not just about managing personal risks but also shows how much you care for them. It is also important that you review your insurance portfolio periodically to ensure that you have the relevant policies to match your protection needs at different life stages.

Young Working AdulTsYou’re young, healthy and have just started to work. You may think that you do not have enough assets or liabilities to protect, but this is actually the best time to purchase medical insurance because your premium will be lower.

Antioxidant-rich food: Give your child more antioxidant-rich foods like apples or apple juice! Oats during breakfast helps your child perform better because it is high in fibre and protein, one of the foods that boost memory performance.

Books: Nurture their interest in reading and make it fun with story-telling! Reading is about sounding out the letters and joining them into words. With constant practice, they get familiar with the letters and the word will remain in their mind.

Crossword puzzles: Perfect game to jog their memory and brain cells. Lateral thinking puzzles, memory games and even riddles are a great way to get some brain exercise. The best part is you can do them anywhere with your child!

Ong Tien Tien, 31 and hubby Gerry Chan, 34 share with us why they started an OCBC Children Development Account for their 1-year old daughter, Charmaine.

Smart parents know the importance of financial planning. From saving to investing, income protection to life insurance, they all take on new significance once anyone becomes a parent!

Here’re 3 easy steps to start!

Step 1 Start a SavingS plan with your BaBy BonuSRegular savings is the first and most important step to healthy finances. When baby arrives, OCBC Bank will help set up your newborn’s Children Development account (CDa), the special account for the Baby Bonus Scheme. You can even ‘upgrade’ to oCBC CDa Extra for higher returns.

Step 2 grow your Family’S nESt EggTake another step to reach your family’s goals by opening an oCBC Smartparent, an account which earns you higher interest than a regular savings account.

Step 3 tEaCh thE lil onE to SavEWhen it’s junior’s time to open his or her own account, oCBC mighty Savers™ can help you start the habit of saving in your child. With interactive elements like cards and stickers, plus encouragement gifts for your child on completion of each card, saving and banking becomes a memorable and fun experience.

“We have always found OCBC’s wide offering of products suitable for

us. So we opened Charmaine’s Children Development Account with OCBC and also started a SmartParent account for regular savings.

We hope that by managing our finances better, we can focus on having a quality life together – for ourselves, our parents and our child. OCBC also helped identify the right products for us, such as an income replacement plan – MaxFamily Protector.

We also enjoy visiting the Suntec City branch on Sundays with our parents and Charmaine. We love the relaxing family-friendly atmosphere and warm staff. This is especially great for Charmaine who doesn’t like crowded, noisy places with long queues. Sunday Banking has definitely help us to enjoy banking with OCBC!”

FRIED RICE PARADISE is hailed as the biggest local production to hit the theatre this year. We had a chat with Dick Lee, composer and writer of this true-blue Singaporean musical.

Back to the FutureI wrote this as a pop song 26 years ago as my entry

to a Rediffussion Talentime. When People’s Association approached me to write a musical to commemorate their 50th

anniversary this year, I thought of this song but with a fresh spin. Fashion & Music from 70s I love the fashion and music from the 70s as it was a very interesting time for Singapore, with many changes happening quickly. This musical deals with how Singaporeans embraced the changes while fighting for their identity and values. Introducing…I worked closely with Singapore Repertory Theatre’s Stage Two to put together both the creative team and the cast. I can’t wait to introduce Taufik Batisah and Rahimah Rahim to the musical theatre genre for the first time. Come prepared for a fun night at the theatre, to laugh your hearts out and be touched by a heart-warming Singaporean musical.

DECEMBER RAINS was the first Mandarin musical ever written in Singapore in 1996 and it was an instant hit with sold out performances. We speak to known director and songwriter, Liang Wern Fook ( ).

All About Love & Kit ChanThis year’s version of DECEMBER RAINS centres on friendship and family love. Look out for several fresh takes to the plot including a love triangle struggle! This is also Kit Chan’s first debut after a long break from the entertainment scene and marks our first collaboration in musicals.

Singapore’s Unsung HeroesThe story is set in the chaotic 1950s because I hope to use this musical to feature the various characters’ life stories and emotions, which portrays the era of a developing

Singapore. There is so much history to be shared of the many forgotten unsung heroes who have contributed to Singapore’s development.

Music to the EarsI’ve composed a few new songs with Jimmy Ye, a very talented composer just for this musical. There will be a variety of old and new songs sung by Kit Chan

and George Chan who are both talented singers. I invite everyone to share my poetic experience in this lovely musical.

Feast on FRIED RICE PARADISE and experience DECEMBER RAINS this issue.

A s the Executive Sous Chef of Fairmont Singapore, Chef Michael Muller’s enthusiasm and culinary creations have always impressed diners. With an

endearing personality and affable attitude, Chef Michael is also an advocate of good food and healthy eating.

Q: how has healthy eating evolved as a trend in recent years? MIchAeL: There is a consciousness among chefs on the benefits of cooking and eating healthily. Diners are now more aware of the quality, flavour and health benefits of organic produce. At Fairmont Singapore, we have eliminated all trans-fat products and where possible, switched to organic items like free-range eggs, organic milk and cream, organic fruit. We even have our own Herb Garden. Look out for our selection of Fairmont Lifestyle cuisine dishes, which are identified by green leaf symbols in our menus. I believe eating healthily has a positive effect on your overall well-being.

Q: Are you a health nut and what do you do to stay healthy? MIchAeL: No, I’m not obsessive about being healthy but I do strongly believe in staying fit. When I’m not working, I swim and spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Q: Is it true that healthy food rarely taste as good as the ‘unhealthy’ ones? can you give some tips for cooking food that is both healthy yet good-tasting?MIchAeL: We need to change the perception that healthy foods are less satisfying in appearance, flavour and portions. In fact, processed foods – especially fast-food items – tend to look artificial because of the preservatives used, and have less natural flavour due to the high sodium and added flavour content. The first step to cooking healthily is cutting out processed foods and making sure that you start with ingredients that are naturally wholesome and flavourful like vine-ripened tomatoes, kampong chicken, free-range eggs, olive oil, salad greens, organic potatoes, etc. Q: What is one healthy ingredient you can’t live without in your cooking?MIchAeL: Olive oil. It is a completely natural ingredient that has a wonderful healing effect on the body (great for soothing stomach ulcers and gastritis). Get organic certified extra virgin olive oil, it is delicious for dressing salads, stir-fried vegetables or just add a few drops to your pasta or risotto dish.

This issue, we get up close and personal with chef ryan shiu, Director of Kitchen at Peony Jade, Keppel Club to share his thoughts on the Mid Autumn Festival.

Q: What do you remember most fondly about the Mid Autumn festival? rYAn: When I was a child, the festival always coincided with the school holidays so it was a very fun and carefree time. My family would gather to enjoy good food while the kids played with the beautiful lanterns under the moonlight.

Q: What is the significance of such chinese festivals and their celebrations?rYAn: I think many Chinese festivals such as Mid Autumn Festival are important in our fast-paced lifestyle today. They helped to bond families together as they celebrate and catch up during these occasions. Besides, the many interesting legends and stories behind these festivals, like how the Chinese organised a united revolt against Mongolian rule by slipping paper in the mooncake filling, helps to promote values such as the spirit of unity to be shared with the younger generation.

Q: What are some of your favourite mooncakes? rYAn: My personal favourites are the Peony Jade Low Sugar Baked Premium White Lotus Paste with Macadamia Nuts & Double Yolk and the new Snow-skin Japan Yuzu Truffle with Orange Walnut Paste. They are made with less sugar, no preservatives, essence or colouring and freshly baked daily.

Q: What’s the best way to enjoy mooncakes? rYAn: Mooncakes should be enjoyed with a pot of freshly brewed Pu-er tea.

Q: how do you intend to celebrate the festival this year?rYAn: I will be working but I will make it a point to enjoy some mooncakes and tea with my colleagues and more importantly, catch up with family and friends in Hong Kong via MSN.

Q: Any delicious mooncake creation ideas in store for 2011? rYAn: They will be petite-sized mooncakes which can be enjoyed in just one bite! Definitely less sweet, healthier and filled with my favourite fruits like mango or pineapple.
