Supported transport and printing protocols

Note: To simplify installation, the Océ TDSXXX has been designed to be plugand play.

The Océ TDSx00/TCS400 supports the following transport protocols:

■ TCP/IP■ IPX/SPX■ NetBeui

The Océ TDSx00/TCS400 supports the following printing protocols:

■ LPD, FTP■ Pserver (Bindery and NDS)■ SMB printing (also known as LAN Manager or Windows networking) on top

of Netbios over NetBeui, TCP/IP or IPX/SPX

Preferred printing solutions

Depending on your network architecture, multiple printing solutions areavailable for each supported operating system. Basically there are two mainconfiguration types:

Where:

■ ‘TDS/TCS’ is the Océ TDSx00/TCS400 Controller■ ‘PS’ is the Print Server workstation (as defined by the customer)■ ‘WS’ is any Client workstation■ ‘P2P’ means Peer to Peer connection■ ‘C/S’ means Client/Server connection

Peer-to-Peer configuration

In this Configuration, the Client WorkStation is directly connected to thecontroller.

The main advantage of the Peer to Peer is in the throughput: only one datatransfer from the Client workstation to the controller.

The main drawback is the lack of centralized resource administration andsetup: each Client workstation has to be setup individually. Also the maximumnumber of simultaneous connection is limited to 10.

SMB (NetBeui) and TCP/IP Protocols allow this type of configuration.

Page 11: Océ TDS-TCSfiles.oceusa.com/media/Assets/PDFs/TSS/external/TCS400/... · 2015-05-06 · 12 Océ TDS-TCS Connectivity Manual Océ Recommended Connections and Setup versus Protocols

Introduction 11

Client/Server configuration

In this Configuration, the printing resources administration are centralized andcontrolled by a System Administrator. The Client workstation is no moredirectly connected to the controller, but to a Print Server workstation.

The main advantages are the central administration of the printing resources, the number of simultaneous connection and the possibility of application anddriver updates.

The main drawback is in the network traffic: printing data are sent twice on theLAN.

The IPX/SPX Protocol can only work with this configuration. The SMB (NetBeui) and TCP/IP Protocols also allow this type ofconfiguration.

Océ Recommended Connections andSetup versus Protocols

Regarding connections, the 3 different protocols (Novell, TCP/IP, SMB) aredetailed in the three following chapters.

Our recommendation for having the easiest Client WorkStation Setup and abetter Printer Remote Administration is to use a Client-Server architecturewhatever the protocol is.

For the Print server, prefer a workstation running a recent operating system(Win XP or 2000 rather than Win NT4); it offers a wider range of sharingpossibilities.

On this print server, install the Océ driver you need (Windows Raster Driver 2,Windows Printer Driver, PostScript 3) and share it.

We mainly recommend that the Océ TSDx00/TCS400 controller be connectedvia TCP/IP LPR Protocol to this Print Server.

All Client workstations (Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 orWindows XP) have access to this shared printer by using the SMB Point andPrint facility.

Queue Based Printing Troubleshooting

This section describes a list of troubleshooting items you can find duringQueue Based Printing setup. It is aimed at the Local Network Administratorand/or End User.

No printing occur

If no printing occurs once all settings (Océ TDSx00/TCS400 + Novell Server+ Client workstation) have been done:

■ You can check the Print Server embedded in Océ TDSx00/TCS400 iscorrectly connected to the Novell Server by checking on the Novell Serveritself: normally there is an active connection on print server (PSTDSX00)which must appear in the Netware 5 Console Monitor / Connection availableoption with the status: NORMAL

■ If the Print Server is not present in Netware 5 Console connection status, reboot the Oce TDSx00/TCS400

■ If the Print Server is present in Netware 5 Console connection status, but thestatus is AUTHENTICATED: Delete the Print Server connection on NovellServer, then Reboot the Oce TDSx00/TCS400

Printing occurs after a while Normally, the controller polls for job every XXseconds, XX is set in Oce TDSx00/TCS400 controller (Settings Editor) and thedefault value is 30 seconds, so printing may occur by default 30 seconds afterhaving submitted the job.

Novell Environment 87

Print Server Name problem It is not recommended to mix lower case and uppercase characters when naming Print server, printer Queue and Printer. Moregenerally, check you follow standard object naming conventions:

■ ‘...Not all print server names will be valid...’Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) names. For example,SAP names may not exceed 47 characters, they cannot containspaces, and they must be in all-caps. In addition, many double-byte characters used on certain code pages arenot valid SAP characters.

Novell Capture not persistent with port LPTX: When using Novell capture toredirect LPTX: port to Novell Queue, after rebooting Windows, the capture isnot active again albeit the check box ‘Check to always capture this port whenyou start Windows’ has been checked. In this case, rather put a ‘capture’command line in the Novell login scripts (ask your Novell Administrator forthat purpose).

My job name is LPT3 in Oce TDSx00/TCS400 Queue Manager Cause is that thedriver port is LPT3, and LPT3 has been redirected to Novell Queue (capture). To avoid this problem, you have to avoid the capture, see the other alternativesfor installing a driver in the relevant section.

I cannot see ‘PSERVER’ on Novell server Monitor connection section Check youhave not exceeded the maximum number of authorized licenses (Use NLS forthat purpose: ask your Novell Administrator)

NDS CONTEXT name problem? On Oce TDSx00/TCS400 controller settings(Novell section), you can either use the typeful or typeless convention whenentering the NDS context name:

■ NDS context: ‘SNS.OCE’(typeless notation) OR■ NDS context: ‘OU=SNS.O=OCE’(typeful notation)

In the case of Country addition, it is highly recommended to use the typefulconvention:

■ NDS context: ‘OU=SNS.O=OCE.C=FR’(Do not use NDS context: ‘SNS.OCE.FR’)

‘Windows cannot connect to the printer’ when adding a printer driver under WindowsXP If you encounter such a windows message when adding a Printer driver:

Check:

■ If the Print Server is not present in Netware Console connection status, reboot the Oce TDSX00/TCS400

■ If the Print Server is present in Netware Console connection status, but thestatus is AUTHENTICATED: Delete the Print Server connection on NovellServer, then Reboot the Oce TDSX00/TCS400

‘Printer driver setup error’ under Windows XPWhen installing a driver under windows XP with ‘Add printer’ method, youmay have the following error window just after the driver files are copied tothe system folder:

Check whether the driver officially supports Windows XP. The problem canoccur with PS3 driver of which release is 1.5 (not Windows XP compatible).

NDPS Setup

Novell® Distributed Print Services® (NDPS®)

Note: The Novell® Distributed Print ServicesTM (NDPSTM) is the default andpreferred print system in NetWare® 5TM.

A Printer Agent (representing all the printer characteristics) is defined onNovell Server. A client sends jobs to the printer on the Novell server. TheNovell server sends the job(s) to the Océ TDSx00/TCS400 through a NovellGateway by using lpr protocol. NDPS Manager manages the printer Agent. The NDPS broker Resource Management Service (RMS) component allowsresources (printer drivers, printer definition files, banners, and fonts) to beinstalled in a central location and then downloaded to clients, printers, or anyother entity on the network that needs them.

[2] Overview of NDPS

Configuration You need to configure the Client Workstation, the OcéTDSx00/TCS400 controller and the NOVELL Server.

Note: The Peer-to-Peer connection does not exist on NDPS.

▼ Setup

1 Setup the Océ TDSx00/TCS400 Controller2 Setup the Novell Server3 Setup the client workstation (driver installation)

Printing in NDPS is very slow with Novell gateway ‘LPR’ printing

There is a known problem on Novell lpr client slow rate (~25 KB/s).Ref. Novell 10057434: Printing to LPR-based printer using Novell PrinterGateway in LPR mode results in slow delivery of print data and slow print jobprocessing times.

Download the Novell patch: NDPS-Post SP2/SP6 NDPS updates (Lastmodified: 17OCT2001). It contains (between other) fix for lpr client.

These updates are intended for any one of the following platforms:■ NetWare 5.1 with Support Pack 2 applied running NDPS 2.1.3.■ NetWare 5.0 with Support Pack 6 applied running NDPS 2.0.6.

NDPS broker setup: add resource problem: the browse button does not work

This problem was noticed on Windows 2000 Operating system when browsingwhile adding a resource.

Note: This problem may also occur on other Operating System.

To solve this problem, you need to launch nwadmn32.exe with the followingoption (require command line):Z:\ win32\nwadmn32.exe /DisableTLSMGR

You cannot see the NDPS printer while browsing with Network Neighborhood

■ This is a known issue for Win NT4/Win2000/Win XP platforms while itworks for Windows 9X platform, and this has an impact when trying tocreate a Printer

■ A workaround consists to create a Queue Object on Novell server and link itto a NDPS printer so that Win NT4/Win2000/Win XP can browse Queueobjects. You can then create a printer on Queue Object destination, but thismethod works fine on pure IP network while checksum errors may occurwhenever IPX and IP protocols are mixed. This is the reason why thismethod is not described in this manual.

Can we use NDPS with Netware 4

There is a NDPS package for Netware 4 which is obsolete so not advised.Recommendation is to upgrade to Netware 5.X in order to use NDPS.

Others

Always check:■ you have the last Novell Support pack for your Novell Server■ you have the last Novell client for your Operating System■ you have the last patches for your Novell client■ Consult Novell site (www.novell.com)
