Objective(s) 10/18/13
We will be able to Describe the characteristics of macromolecules
Macromolecules Large organic compounds that are essential to life
◦ Proteins: Serve many functions; include enzymes
◦ Nucleic Acids: Direct protein production; include DNA and RNA
◦ Carbohydrates: Provide energy and structure; include sugars, starch, and cellulose
◦ Lipids: Not soluble in water; many functions; include fats, waxes, and hormones

Macromolecules Research – DUE Next Friday, October 25th.
You will work individually or in pairs to create a POSTER. Everyone will be assigned a macromolecule (lipid, carbohydrate, protein, or nucleic acids.) Use the textbook AND the Internet to research your assigned macromolecule. Make sure to answer the following questions:◦ What is the structure of this macromolecule? How are the atoms connected? What different
forces hold these atoms and molecules together?◦ What are their primary functions? (What purposes do they serve?)◦ Give two specific examples of the macromolecule and describe their function in living things.
(For example, cholesterol is an example of a lipid and glucose is an example of a carbohydrate.)◦ Describe two diseases that your macromolecule is involved in.◦ Anything else that is related to your macromolecule
Poster tips1. Have all your research organized separate sheets of paper with all the
sources you’ve used.2. Create a “rough draft.” Don’t start working on your poster. 3. Avoid using too much glue! (Or use tape)4. Use enough colors (markers or colored pencils). Nothing should be
written in regular pencil.

No, you may not change macromolecules. And again, you DO NOT have to work with a partner!
During PROJECT work Time
1. Stay focused on the task you have been assigned. Avoid irrelevant side conversations.
2. Keep the noise level down.3. Ask THREE before you ask ME.4. You may put earphones on and listen to music quietly as you do
your work.5. You must make a significant amount of progress by the end of
the period!6. If you have a computer, your phones SHOULD not be out. All
phones should be put away.***
Status Report On a separate sheet of paper: In about a paragraph or more, write about what you have accomplished by the end of this period. Specify at least 5 pieces of new information that you have learned and explain how you will use this for the final product of your project.
Please leave this in the inbox as you walk out at the end of class.
