As in the immortal words of Freddie Mercury - "Another one bites the dust" - the 1992 rugby season is over. Time certainly goes quickly when you are enjoying yourself!!

No sooner had some hardy members of the Club (including myself) returned from the 1991 Petersham World Cup Tour, than we were organising the Club for 1992 - no rest for the wicked.

The combined efforts of all of the Club's dedicated officials (where would we be without them) produced mixed results with the juniors having their best year to date since re-entering the junior competition in 1987.

Our Under 8's won the Southern Districts Mini Carnival Shield, much to the delight of Coach Wayne Lanham. This team was undefeated throughout the year and it appears we could have some real champions on our hands.

Also, the Under 12's reached their Grand Final but, unfortunately, they were narrowly defeated by old rivals St Brigits. By all reports, however, our 12's were the better team on the day but a couple of basic mistakes cost them dearly.

The new boys (the Under 7's) had plenty of numbers in their introductory year and basically had a good time.

The "Battishall Battlers" had number problems throughout the season but managed to keep their spirit and humour.

The big fellas had what they would consider a poor season as it was the first time in a decade that not one of our senior sides made the semi-finals. There was no shortage of talented rugb1 players discovered (both on and off the field) and things look good for the future.

Thanks must go to all the dedicated officials of our Club - they ali sacrifice a lot of their time to be involved in this pastime called "Rugby". The game is a good excuse for all to get together and have a good time.

Special thanks must go to Lawrie Yeomans for his great effort in looking after the junior section of the Club. He works tirelessly on all fronts, from recruiting to looking after the gear.

1993 certainly looks promising with Under 7's already recruited and numbers for the other mini's up, however, work must be concentrated on the Under 11 'so

I hope everyone enjoys their summer break, and don't forget to keep your eyes glued to the TV and support our Wallabies.

See you in '93.

It seems a long time since I was hog-tied and bound with a gun to my head, and forced to accept the prestigious and honourable position of Oatley Club Captain. The promise of a free schooner or two on a Saturday also swayed me.

Firstly, I would like to thank all those people who contributed to the running of Oatley this year. This includes the people who cleaned up after games, organised functions, collected money and convinced people to pay their fees, and those who, over the season, were involved in the caravan and many other jobs too numerous to mention - these people know who they are and deserve great thanks.

Rugby is more than playing a game on Saturdays - it's about the friends you make playing the game - which is something the new players would have found out about very quickly.

Thanks also to the Management Committee and Officials for their efforts during the year and for those who acted as Ambassadors for the Club - but Kiama really didn't need you.

One of the highlights of the year was the comeback in the second round against Chatswood. This 4-0 defeat showed what spirit Oatley Rugby Club has, even though at times we had more injuries that at the running of the bulls.

The spirit of Oatley Rugby Club showed through with the success of the Subbies Day and the Golden Oldies Day, and through those people who took overseas billets and showed them the Oatley version of the Australian way. We are happy to report that all visitors survived.

Finally, I would like to say thanks to all the supporters, parents and friends for their support during the year. I hope that 1993 wili be bigger and better for Oatley, both on and off the field.

Keith Bennett

1992 was a season of consolidation and growth for the juniors of Oatley. The Club fielded four teams in the Under 7, 8, 10 and 12 age groups with the highlights being the Under 8s winning the trophy on the Mini's Carnival Day and the Under 12s reaching the Grand Final.

Good recruitment of Under 7s was also a feature this season and it was pleasing to see the Under 7s finish the season with 13 players and excellent parent support. This augurs well for next season in our mini age groups.

Our U8s had a very successful season - not only did they win the Mini's trophy but they won all their games during the year. All players continued to show improvement but we were unlucky to lose one of our players, Peter Rugg, when his coliarbone was broken by his best friend, Wade Lanham, in a pre-match warm-up tackle.

Special credit must go to our Under 10s, especially their coach Bruce Battishall, for their efforts in difficult circumstances all season. Despite never fielding a fuli team they didn't give up and were very unlucky not to win the final game of the season against Bays at Nagle Park. We are looking to recruit more players in the Under 11 age group to ensure that in 1993 Bruce and his team have a full complement.

The Under 12s, ably coached by Manu Sutherland and efficiently managed (as ever) by Gil Viciulis had a magnificent season. They were very unlucky to lose the Grand Final by 12-7 in a game which they totally dominated territorially but, unfortunately, they just could not turn that domination into points on the scoreboard. Even their opponents and supporters on the day conceded that the better team lost'

On the representative scene, three of our Under 10s were selected in the Southern District team as were ten of our Under 12s. Special congratulations to Phillip McLean, David Low, Cade Sutherland and Jonathan Moody who were selected in the MetropOlitan East Primary Schools representative team which was undefeated in the State Carnlval at Narrabri in August. And particular congratulations to Jonathan Moody who was selected at full back in the State Primary Schools team following the Carnival and went to Canberra to play against ACT Schools.

Once again parent support for all our teams was excellent - this certainly makes the life of the coaches and managers so much easier.

My special thanks to Brian Norris, Wayne Lanham, Bruce Battishall, Manu Sutherland and Gil Viciulis for all their assistance during the season.

1992 has been a very successful one for Oatley Junior Rugby and next season we hope to field at least five teams with the Under 13s looking forward to their trip to Adelaide in April.

Lawrie Yeomans Junior's Secretary

1992 was a good season with several players carrying over from the previous Under 7's.

Most games during the season were close and, by the end of the year, the team was playing as a well-oiled machine.

In the forwards ali performed well and, as for the backs, we didn't have any - they were all too hungry for the ball.

The season started with an Under 7's coach's biggest problem - getting the boys to run in the right direction. Several tries were scored over the side lines - ali concerned thought it very unfair these were not allowed - one must question the standard of refereeing.

Try scoring machines included James Horne (very quick in the open), Andrew Norris (able to carry four or five over the line with him), Alexander Boston (a great change of direction) and Christopher Watson (strong fend and sheer determination). .

Best defensive efforts included James Lazarus (always where the play is), Kent Chambers (follows play like a bull terrior), Ryan Bowring (knock them down tackles with ''where did that guy go" runs), Andrew Green and Jonathan Sheahan (try-saving tackles and great kicking), Andrew (don't argue) Wakhla and Matthew (that's my ball) Egan.

A late starter to the team was Matthew Kerr whose ability showed through very quickly.

Ending the season with 13 players has left a strong nucleus for next season, while giving plenty of strength to go up into the Under 8's.

All-in-all a great season for the Wallabies and the Under 7's.

Here's Cheers to OATLEY RUGBY!!!

"\{á:"'I~~á~J~rrJ.:"'r.Ji[fJ:~~ Hello everybody! Well, here we are at the end of another of rugby

season which proved to be very successful for the Oatley Under 8's having some very good games against Royals, Blakehurst and new arch-rivals, Sylvania.

The start of the season was very good with the boys starting where they left off last year. Our new boys, Rhys Redmond and David "Nugget" Jeffs, picked the game up well with both boys scoring tries. Chris Smith also carne up with his first try and has improved his tackling and rucking,

Our two try-scoring machines, Andrew Low and Alex Leighton, continue to enjoy some good running, and Peter Christopher continues to be our best in-tight and rucking player, and he scored some good tries from his hard work.

We also have two very good tacklers in Wade Lanham and Peter Rugg. Unfortunately for Peter, his collarbone was broken by his best friend before a game. Wade also had a good year in which his running improved greatly and he finished up with an end-of-year try tally of 10 tries. Late in the season we gained a new player, Rabuka Roccos, who added a lot of strength to our side.

All-m-all it was a very enjoyable year for myself as Coach and for the Team's Manager, Mike Low, who was a great support to myself. I must also thank all the parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends who came along, helped Mike and myself and supported the boys in their endeavours.

Thanks again, hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all next footy season.

The Champions

At the time of writing this report I'm relaxing in my lounge room on a Saturday morning - a somewhat unusual occurrence.

The season was both rewarding and, at times, very taxing on one's spirit but above all the boys tried their hardest and didn't give up at any time,

It was always going to be difficult with only the bare number of players, some of whom were having their first season of rugby.

I think the format of the competition needs some re-thinking. It was a bit too much to ask boys playing on a mini field ('/3 the size of a rugby field) one year to turn around the next year and play on a full field with 15-a-side, full serums and line-outs. This could have the effect of demoralising a young player.

The results on the field were not all to our liking but who could forget that win against Blakehurst at Evatt Park and that very narrow loss to the Wallaroo's (Blue) during the latter part of the season. That game showed us that, with things going our way, the Oatley U10's are a formidable unit.

Three of our boys made it to the Southern Districts Representative U10 team - John McBryde (Captain), Chris Moore and Guy Lingard - and all performed creditably.

Many thanks must also go to Debra Lingard who kept the statistics of the games and was a great help to me throughout the season.

Thanks for the season.

Referees' Signals Explained To enable players and onlookers to understand why the referee is ruining what could be a wonderful, flowing game of rugby, the powers that-be have established a series of signals for the ref to make his decisions for continually blowing-up obvious to all.

1. I'm totally confused, but something illegal must have happened.

5. I am the local hokey-cokey champion.

2. Do that to my son

6. Don't expect me to run: my gUide dog bit me yesterday.

3. My Auntie is in the stand.

1992 will be recorded as the year of the "Bridesmaid". After finishing third on the competition ladder, and with magnificent wins over Easts Blue in the semi and Easts Red in the final, the team went into the grand-final full of confidence but, alas, they went down 7-12 to St Bridgits.

In September'we competed in a Jl:Jnior Sevens-wumamel'lt in-Oanberra against 16 teams from ACT and NSW, however, the curse of the "Bridesmaid"_ struck again with the boys going down to Canberra Marist 5-19 in the final. A great effort considering the quality of the teams they played against.

The boys again proved themselves to be the premier team in the district by winning the "Southern Districts Champion Team" shield. Thanks also to all the parents for your efforts in arranging transport, barbecues and all the other little things that have contributed to the spirit of comraderie that our group of boys and parents now have. Young and old alike have made new fr.uaoos.

Finaliy, a special and sincere thanks to ali you ooys for giving us so much pleasure and entertainment during the year. You are a great group of talented young sportsmen and, although you may not have achieved your goal this year, if you continue with the hard work and dedication that you have shown you will be premiers next year.

With only five Barraclough Cup players backing up from the previous season it was always going to be a tough task to compete with the heavyweights of this year's competition.

To our credit the assembled team produced many memorable moments throughout our 18 rounds but, unfortunately, they were unable to make the semi's - finishing in seventh position on the ladder.

The two most memorable games were against Hunters Hill in the first round and against Chatswood in the second round. These games were an example of the true potential that the team possessed - they were played at a high level of commitment and the players had great control over their game.

The season gave the chance for many new talents to be discovered - none better than Alan West, Sean Parmenter, John van der Kullen, Mark Fitzgerald and Bill Bell. Bill has the ability to be an even better player and with a taste of top rugby, might just knuckle down to some hard training.

Our stalwart players such as Rod Dunn, Keith Bennett, Paul Bennett, Dave Johannson and Paul Byers always led by example on and off the field (sometimes to people's dismay) and provided spirit to the new players.

One pleasing aspect of the side's performance was their ability to keep coming back when the pressure was on. The game against Knox at Barrabrui when we were down by a considerable margin showed that with some scintillating tries being scored in the second half.

The players were a pleasure to coach even though I don't know whether I really contributed a great deal but I certainly enjoyed a large number of the matches that we played.

For us to achieve a top-four berth next season we have to build on the player base that we have and the way the team is coached will be changed with, hopefully, two coaches being appointed to the top side (my idea only). We have potential plus - recruitment has started already and a program already set into place, so things are happening. Don't miss 1993.

I have decided not to seek re-election as coach of the Barraclough Cup side as I will be concentrating on recruitment and keeping the players once they join us (not like some coaches I know).

Thanks to all players for a great effort and special thanks to my Manager, Paul Langdon, who is probably the .b..e..s.1 Manager and all-round great guy I know.

Also, a special thanks to our Club Secretary, Shane Dunn, for his contribution to the season. He juggled playing in the Barraclough and Stockdale Cups while doing a great job running around organising the other coaches and grades.

Once again thanks to all

The 1992 Stockdale Cup Team

The 1992 Blunt Cup Team

Once upon a time, some idiot picked up a soccer ball and ran with it. What a fool! From this small indiscretion the OATLEY 2nd's was formed and I haven't had a moments peace since.

Actually at the beginning of the season the 2nd's looked like that poor fool that first picked up the ball, running around lost, learning new names and terms (ruck, maul etc.), and basically trying to follow the decisive leader WHO WAS ... ? I don't know, remember I was in Hawai i working out the team strategies for the season, getting a suntan and a hangover.

But once I the Master Coach returned and realised he had missed the beginning of the season, the mighty 2nd's not only stopped loosing games (2 draws) they actually went on and put a string of wins together. Usually winning by the width of that string.

This amazing turn around can be directly and indisputably be put down to one major factor, the return of the magnificent, the incorruptible but lovable, the strict but kindly, cute and cuddly coach. WARREN, the BEAR, HUMPHREYS. Give three cheers Ya Ya Ya.

Under the superb tuition of the MASTER COACH "BEAR" the 2nd's skill level and knowledge of the game rose dramatically to where a point was obtained that most players that weren't in hospi tal or injured (Hutera, Kalavi tis, Kanellopulos, Lyden, Whi tehead, p I us more) real i sed that they di dn 't need to come to training any more. On State of Origin games sometimes even the coach agreed. The forwards 1 earnt new terms 1 ike ruck, maul, scrum, short lineout and "YES, Mr Referee" (Didn't they Willo?) The backs increased their skill levels until they could pass and, yes even catch a football, some backs even started to get the idea to kick the baIlout on the full from thei r own 25, or at least they tried and of course we won't even mention the ability that abounded when it came to 25 drop outs and conversions, but it was at this stage of the season, when things were looking tough, that one of the many master strokes was employed by the "SUPER COACH".

With the acquisition of Glen "THE PROP" Montgomery as t ns i de centre the 2nd's were to become known as the Entertainers. Scoring tries from allover the field. No team was prepared for the devious tactic as the likes of "speedy Boyle", "Rocket Cadet", "getaway Fox" and "Smelly Dunnies" (Brendan, Shane or Rod) were put through holes like Nuggets Mouth. BIG !! And the winning continued.

Also half way through the season new forces in world rugby developed. Players such as "Van Der Killen", "Fraser", "Sommerville", "Walsh" and "Please can I have a VB Knapton" with the old stalwarts such as "RIBS Larkin" and "Billy Bell" came out of the dell and with the inspiration, determination and foresight shown by their leader and mentor COACH "WONDERFUL" the winning continued! You could hear the excitement in the voices after yet another win saying "did you

see that ruck I went into", "Did you see that ball I caught . and we were all impressed by the new lingo that ~as used.

So why did such a team', superbly prepared during 3rd grad, each Saturday, trained relentlessly Wednesday nights and mad, up of Oatleys' Finest not make the final 4. Several reasons -

Not one player got sent off all year Not one player started the game drunk from the nigh be'fure Not one player went out and got the other team drunk tho night before. No one bribed the referee (coaches fault) No one bribed the other teams (coach hasn't got that muc. money) No one bought the coach a drink '1-' 1 ayers d i cm : 1: Know what numberi -co 'warE! on 4:ire'iT -jumpe1 S Coach didn't know what numbers to give the players Coach and breakaway forgot the jumpers Coach lost the jumpers at the end of the season Players believing that jumpers can't get dirty Players believing that an education is more importan .than .f.o.otball . Players believing that the referee 1s always wrong Players believing that the coach was always right Some Japanese players not knowing how to toss a coin BUT the major factor the 2nd's didn't make the 4 i because Tim "the injured" Whiteman wouldn't play gol with the coach.

Wi th these flaws taken out of the team next year and a ful return of all players in all grades plus a couple of imports next year is looking good. We also cannot forget the man helpers through the year and thanks' a lot to 'Female Brown and 'Helpful Jonesy' for running around for me. To everyo~ that p I ayed 2nd's (and there was over 50 of them) I wou.l.

For personal attention to aU your iosuraooe nood.-<:ont.ac:t

In the beginning a classic team with that optimal blend of youth and experience took to the field of play. A Few win's were notched up, and a promising season lay ahead (so we thought!). A number of key players then received the call from the Almighty, and they went forward to replace the wounded on the Evatt park frontier, some never to be seen again. The results then followed a pattern of marginal defeats, the forward pack providing a wealth of possession played with grunt and grit thanks to Kenny Millar leading by example. The overall lack of finishing power and cohesion in the ever changing back line was the downfall of the team.

Despite the frequent attendance at training sessions of the complete backline all working into the night perfecting their handling skills and backline moves with fluency and pace, we still could not produce on the day.

A number of individuals are worthy of mention. Dave Barnes for the performance of his right boot and that one devastating run of the year, not forgetting his clubmanship and vocal sideline encouragement for 2nd grade.

Michael Springett, Les Gover, and Bill Bell for their contributions in the first round before they moved to the higher grades and lo~ered the average age of 3rd grade by 10 years.

Dave Morton who made notable improvement in form throughout the year. Brendon Barratta a solid 1st year away from that knuckle head code, Mick Compton for his leadership in the 2nd round. Matt "the Ox" Hay who's devastating pace and ball skills made all the difference, Walshy for all the beers he keeps buying for everyone.

Sorry Fellas, Mike's gone Walkabout

It was a pleasure to see the game played in the spirit with very few excursions from that strict code of conduct adopted by the Gentlemen of Oatley.
