Professional skills for primary industryThe purpose of this qualification is to provide the agribusiness sector with individuals who have the knowledge and skills to manage a wide range of agribusiness operations.

Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises agribusiness management skills and knowledge to successfully manage the wide range of agribusinesses, or who have some industry or other relevant experience and are ready to advance into a management position within an agribusiness.

INDUSTRY-BASED TRAININGEIT has teamed up with Primary Industry Training Organisation to deliver the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness L5. As a student you will receive specific training from EIT’s lectures that will provide you with the knowledge and skill to progress your career and/or business. Additional support is provided at your workplace through the Primary ITO Training Adviser, who will work with you to help reach your goals.

TIMETABLEYour study time will be made up of contact time (class times, tutorials, industry-based learning) and non-contact time (your own individual study time, online learning).

CONTACT TIMEOn-campus class time varies depending on location. This qualification requires attendance at one class per fortnight and an online component each alternative week.

NON-CONTACT TIMEStudents should plan to spend ten hours of study per course per week including scheduled classroom time.

ENTRY CRITERIAApplicants are required to have the following

▶ NCEA L2, OR ▶ Successful completion of a certificate Level

3 or above, preferably in the Primary Industries subject area, OR

For applicants 20 years or older without any of the above academic criteria, evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, and the ability to undertake tertiary study at Diploma level is required. In this case the applicant will be required to participate in an enrolment interview with the purpose of verifying the evidence.

Must have access to financial and production performance information about a specific agribusiness.

In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet the academic entry requirements may be granted entry to the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness Management (Level 5) where they supply evidence to satisfy the Programme Coordinator of their ability to succeed on the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness Management programme.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTIf English is not your first language you are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply); completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) Level 4 with the Academic endorsement; approved scores on IELTS of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5; or completion of accepted international equivalents.

ENTRY WITH CREDITYou may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.

▶ Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.

You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.

Applications for RPL for a course should be made prior to enrolment in that course and no later than two weeks after the start of the course.

The levy is to contribute to the provision of quality student services that support learning. The funds received by EIT from the levy are ring-fenced, meaning they can only be spent on student services.

STUDENT LOANS AND ALLOWANCESStudyLink is a service of the Ministry of Social Development. Apply well before your programme begins (even if you haven't been accepted yet) so you'll be ready to get your payments when you need them most. Check out studylink.govt.nz or phone 0800 88 99 00. A Student Allowance is a weekly payment to help you with living expenses. It doesn't have to be paid back. A Student Loan is made up of three parts – compulsory fees, course-related costs and living costs. You have to pay these back.

PROGRAMME INFORMATIONThis programme of study comprises 150 credits at level 5 and leads to the award of the New Zealand Diploma in Agribusiness Management (Level 5).

The programme is made up of five compulsory 30 credit courses where the learning outcomes align with the Graduate and Qualification outcomes. Prior to assessment in the final course – Agribusiness Report, learners must successfully complete all other courses in the programme of study. This ensures that the range of practice skills, theoretical knowledge and learning that is developed in the pre-requisite courses can contribute to an integrated critical analysis of a specified agribusiness in the final integrated agribusiness report. The programme of study can be undertaken either full time or part time. Delivery is predicated on a blend of face to face workshops, tutorials, web enhanced learning with web supported resources and self-directed learning.
