Garden Transformations 1
adopt an nyrp garden and transform nyc
Founded by Bette Midler in 1995, NYRP is the only New York City conservancy that works citywide, bringing private resources to spaces that lack adequate municipal support. NYRP owns and manages 52 community gardens throughout the five boroughs and we work every day to promote the revitalized health of the neighborhoods these gardens serve.
Thus far we have completely restored and revitalized 26 of these 52 gardens. As NYRP’s 20th Anniversary approaches, we are poised to complete the renovation of our remaining 26 gardens—but we need your support.
Based on the needs of each community, garden renovations will vary in scale and cost. Some require a complete overhaul, but others are only missing a few essential elements, like a dedicated water source or composting facilities.
Serving low-income communities with median family incomes around $20K-$40K, our gardens provide children and families with the rare opportunity for a safe, open space to play.
Located in neighborhoods including Bushwick and East New York in Brooklyn, Jamaica and Far Rockaway in Queens, the South Bronx, and St. George in Staten Island—all officially designated by NYC as “food deserts”—our gardens can be a critical source of fresh food. NYRP’s gardeners annually produce over 10,000 lbs. of food, growing everything from radishes and cilantro to broccoli and strawberries.
Once renovated, these sites will never revert to their former condition. That remains central to our mission: We are committed to long-term stewardship, to make sure these gardens are actively used resources that engage and serve the local community.
Open space is especially critical to the health of underserved communities and to the overall well-being of our city. Make an indelible impact on an entire community and on New York City by adopting one of our remaining 26 community gardens—a unique and limited opportunity.

“ It’s a great satisfaction to know I plant the food my family and I eat.”Lucia Bravo (pictured above), local gardener at NYRP’s Rodale
