Children are able to ‘see’ patterns and make connections easier.

Clare Calderbank, Maths Subject Leader,

Canon Evans Church of England Infant School

A proven approach

It all started with one question... ‘Why?’ In the mid 1990s Dr Tony Wing and I voiced the question many other teachers were asking – why do so many children find maths hard when they succeed in other subjects?

We looked at how we were teaching and realised that we had been underestimating the difficulties children have understanding abstract ideas without pictures to help them. So we set up a school-based Teacher Development Agency (TDA) research project to see what impact structured images (Numicon Shapes and Cuisenaire rods) would have.

We found that children made remarkable progress and teachers’ subject knowledge and maths pedagogy improved as they adopted the approach. Romey Tacon

Indeed, the research, comparing three infant school cohorts over five years, found that using Numicon led to a 47% increase in children achieving Level 3 in KS1 maths and a 72% increase in the number of those children later achieving Level 5 at KS2.

It is this research and development that formed the basis of the teaching approaches that now underpin the Numicon programme.

Key mathematical ideas Equivalence, Fractions, Multiplying, Place value, Rounding, Numbers and the Number System Mathematical thinking and reasoning

Introducing decimal fractions

Assessment opportunities Look and listen for children who can: • Use the words and terms for use in conversation effectively. • Say a number that sits between two consecutive whole

numbers on the number line. • Express tenths of a whole as common fractions and

decimal fractions. • Explain that the value of a digit increases 10 times when

moved one place to the left and decreases 10 times when moved one place to the right.

• Explain that the digit in the first decimal place represents the number of tenths.

• Show decimal fractions correctly using place value cards.

Educational context In this activity group children’s understanding of part‑whole relationships is extended with the introduction of decimal fractions, initially in the context of intervals on measuring scales. The number line is used as the context in which children are encouraged to consider the numbers that lie between whole numbers, and to understand that tenths can be expressed as both common and decimal fractions. Place value within decimal fractions is linked with scaling up or down 10 times, and practical activities using Numicon 10‑shapes on a Decimal Baseboard support children’s understanding and their ability to use decimal notation. In the concluding activities children apply their knowledge of place value to comparing and ordering decimal fractions.

Learning opportunities • To understand that fractions fall between two consecutive

whole numbers on the number line. • To understand that common fractions and decimal

fractions can both be used to represent the same number. • To know that the decimal point serves to separate the

whole and the fractional parts of a mixed number. • To use knowledge of place value to connect the column

value to the quantity value of decimal fractions. • To use place value understanding to compare and order

decimal fractions. • To round decimal fractions.

Words and terms for use in conversation intervals, measuring scales, tenth, decimetre, decimal fraction, common fraction, whole number, in between, decimal point, rounding, place value

• Compare and order decimal fractions. • Round decimal fractions to the nearest whole number.

Explorer Progress Book 4b, pp. 16–17 After completing work on this activity group, give small focus groups of children their Explorer Progress Books and ask them to work through the challenges on the pages. As children complete the pages, assess what progress they are making with the central ideas from the activity group. Refer to the assessment opportunities for assistance.

Activity 3: Rotating Numicon Shapes Have ready: Numicon Shapes, Numeral Cards 0–9 (cut from photocopy master 6), squared paper (optional), Numicon Software for the Interactive Whiteboard (optional), Explore More Copymaster 5: Rotating Patterns

Step 1 Remind children of the work they did on rotating clock hands in Activity 2. Show them an odd Numicon Shape, e.g. a 5-shape (don’t use a 1-shape),upright as it appears on the Numicon Display Number Line, e.g. Fig. 6 . Place another 5-shape next to the first in the same orientation (see Fig. 7 ). Ask children to turn the second 5-shape a quarter rotation clockwise (see Fig. 8 ). Look and listen for children who can identify the clockwise direction and the correct amount of turn. Discuss with children how the quarter rotation changes way the Shape looks. Look and listen for children making a connection with the minute hand of a clock pointing to ‘o’clock’ and ‘quarter past’.

Step 2 Ask children to place a third 5-shape next to the second in the same orientation, then turn it through a quarter rotation clockwise (see Fig. 9 ). Look and listen for any children predicting what the rotated Shape will look like. Discuss what children can see and how the look of the Shape changes as it rotates.

Step 3 Challenge children to repeat the rotations with two more 5-shapes, e.g. Fig. 10 . Look and listen for children predicting that the fifth Shape will look the same as the first and for any who arrange their Shapes to make a clock face, e.g. Fig. 11 . Agree that the first and fifth Shapes look the same. Talk with children about why this is and establish that the pattern or sequence children have made shows what happens when the Shape rotates through four quarter turns, which is the same as one full turn. Children could record their sequences on squared paper, e.g. Fig. 12 or by drawing round the Shapes.

Step 4 Invite children to explore making rotations in the same way with other odd and even Numicon Shapes. Look and listen for children predicting what their Shapes will look like when rotated, for those who can make four quarter turns to show one full turn and for those who work systematically. Encourage them to record their sequences. Talk with children and compare their sequences. Look and listen for children who begin to generalize, noticing patterns, e.g. the odd Shapes look different for each quarter rotation, the even Shapes look the same every two quarter rotations and the 1- and 4-shapes look the same for every quarter rotation (see Fig. 13 ).

Resources for Early Years and parents

EYFS Resources What’s Covered? Level/Age

A key feature of this resource is the focus on maths conversation with ideas to encourage mathematical development throughout the pre-school setting, which will help give children a sound start to their maths understanding.

The Teaching Guide explains the key mathematical ideas and contains innovative, playful activities, which are set out in the following groups: mathematics on the carpet, in water play, in messy play, in sand play, in outdoor play, in small-world play, in tabletop play and at snack time.

Ages 3–5 EYFS/P1

Designed for all Early Years settings, this resource gives teachers practical ideas to develop children’s understanding of numbers and number relationships. The easy-to-follow programme of activities helps to develop children’s concept image of number through learning the Numicon Shapes and patterns, recognising and ordering numerals and learning their values, and beginning practical addition and subtraction.

The Assessment Tools are linked to the EYFS development bands and provide a useful way of tracking pupils’ progress.

Ages 4–5 EYFS/P1

Through a series of illustrations and songs this resource introduces the Numicon Shape Patterns and activities with images of the seaside. The set is supplied with four small copies of the big book for sharing, a CD of the ten songs and a teaching guide, which contains suggestions for questioning and discussion, along with photocopy activities for school and homework.

This product is designed to help children aged 3–5 develop a rich understanding of number ideas. It is intended to be used alongside the Numicon Firm Foundations Kit and 1st Steps with Numicon in the Nursery.

Closing the Gap with Numicon has been designed specifically for pupils with SEN or those working well below age-related expectations. Aiming to develop children’s core understanding of number, it addresses the acquisition of numerosity (awareness of the number of objects in a set), counting, the ability to recognise and exploit pattern, and early computation.

The teaching file offers solutions to pupils’ difficulties, supporting you in your assessment, planning and teaching to ensure that every child has the opportunity to understand and achieve.

Numicon Homework Activities – Intervention Resource The Numicon Homework Activities are

designed to enable children to practise and consolidate their understanding of the curriculum at home. The playful activities and games develop skills in: counting, adding and subtracting facts, place value and recognition of the inverse relationship between adding and subtracting.

The activities are simple for schools to administer and come with comprehensive guidance for teachers. They are supplied on a CD for teachers to print so children can take them home. Each game and activity comes with clear and easy-to-follow instructions for parents, allowing them to get involved without actually ‘teaching’ their children.

Schools should also purchase ‘Maths Bags’*. These contain the resources needed to complete the games

What is included on the CD? • 43 activities linked to the school curriculum • Comprehensive advice for teachers • Feedback sheets to be completed by the

children and parents • Record sheets for teachers and explanatory

information for parents, including a PDF presentation that schools can use to introduce parents to the resources.

Number lines, tracks and number rods

The Numicon Number Lines are integral to many of the Numicon activities and help to raise the profile of numbers in the classroom. Number rods provide another format of structured imagery to help enrich number understanding. Number rods can be used in picture and pattern making and alongside Numicon Shapes. The colours of Numicon Shapes and number rods are deliberately different because it is not helpful for children to associate a number with any one colour. The rods are not graduated so they can be seen to represent different numbers in different situations. The possible values of number rods are seen when they are placed in relation to each other.

Numicon Professional Development

What is the value of Numicon Professional Development to schools? Practitioners benefit from the time to focus on their needs and developing skills to ensure a long term and cohesive plan for school improvement in mathematical teaching and learning.

Numicon is founded on the question: ‘why do some children find maths so difficult to learn?’. We want to support teachers in exploring this question, asking questions of themselves and their own confidence and understanding of mathematics, and how children learn.

Numicon Professional Development: • Models effective teaching and learning

strategies through consistent use of Numicon

• Enables participants to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in mathematics

• Is provided by professionals within education and mathematics, with the necessary experience, skills and expertise

• Is planned in communication with each individual setting to ensure we meet their unique needs and the outcomes sought.

Very practical, hands on, friendly and informative.
