On the eve of every academic season, I cannot help but think about introducing new

pedagogies and becoming innovated in content and teaching/learning methods. Though

this is easier said than done, we never fail to make our best efforts.

The role of academic environment and the experiences of the faculty are critical aspects in

management education. Every management school grooms students either to manage

organizations or become entrepreneurs. There is nothing like a typical organization. Each

organization has a certain character, size and its own challenges. You cannot groom

students in a less challenging environment and ask them to work in a high-octane

atmosphere.

The point is, there is a need for reviewing the curriculum on a continual basis. The training

provided must help students acquire relevant knowledge, reflect on their strengths and

weaknesses and move up the learning curve. Our task also includes instilling confidence

in them by helping them convert their weaknesses into strengths and providing necessary

knowledge and exposure to help them understand the external environment.

At National School of Business, our teaching methods and curriculum are constantly

reviewed, changed and modified so as to keep pace with the dynamic business

environment. In addition, we prepare our students to face the world with confidence by

imbuing them with positive character, the readiness to accept challenges and a willingness

to strive for excellence. We believe, that's the only way to bring meaning to management

education.

At NSB, every minute is precious. Everyone strives to deliver our promise to make you

more valuable.

Excellence and Ethics are the key drivers

of NSB. The vision of Prof. Sridhara

Murthy is very clear. NSB shares the same

values that we share in ESC-Pau. The student is

in the center of the pedagogical process. The professors are

focused to make him successful from a personal and a

From my part, I really enjoy to work

with all the NSB professors and I feel

particularly happy to teach Indian and

French students, all together in the

same batch. They will be the managers of

tomorrow. They will have to manage properly the 3P's:

Profit/People/Planet. I am convinced that NSB will give

them the abilities, skills and competencies to succeed

in our globalized world.

management of National School of Business, we were impressed by

the quality of education provided by them and their transparent

nature. They provide opportunity for students to partake in student

exchange program and global mindset trail.

I was impressed by the amount of knowledge possessed by each

professor at National School of Business. I approached them only after

receiving good feedback about the college from the people I knew.

Looking back I think it was just the right choice made.

You want a level of success that doesn't come from a typical classroom

education. That's why the National School of Business refuses to teach

in a typical way.

As one of the most prestigious business school in India, National

School of Business has been developing top business leaders ever

since its inception. We consistently launch great careers because our

students learn by doing. Candidates are hand-picked for their

impressive and diverse backgrounds, and then we immerse them in an

active learning environment that takes their experience to the next

level.

Our unique student-led and action-led learning are nothing

short of transformational. You will become a better leader, the kind of

confident and effective decision-maker who is highly sought after in all

sectors of business.

learning

There are many MBA programs out there. National School of Business

stands apart from traditional business schools because of its unique

approach to training. The interlinked elements give you not just the

business fundamentals that you would expect from an MBA program

but also the leadership capabilities required to turn concepts into

decisions, knowledge into action, and ideas into change. The NSB

MBA opens your mind to how the business world really works and

prepares you to take challenges head-on.

Before you start asking to see a course outline, let's make one thing

perfectly clear. How you learn is more important! Because no matter

how engaging a faculty member may be, you can't be lectured into

becoming a great decision-maker.

From day-one in the program, the pace is fast and unyielding, and the

adrenaline rush is undeniable. Each class is a journey through a

complex, multi-disciplined business challenge. You are immediately

confronted with the reality that in business, things rarely fit into tidy

Why we stand out?

functional boxes. You'll have too much information, or at times not

enough, but through the program you'll become comfortable making

decisions when faced with uncertainty.

Class preparation starts with each student tackling an individual

assessment of the case and crafting a plan of action. From there, you

Anybody can learn a theory. All schools teach core business

knowledge, but that's where the similarity ends. At National School of

Business, we believe knowledge is necessary but not sufficient for

career success. Pushing you to learn how and when to apply ideas is

the difference that will take you from manager to leader. Strong

leaders are confident leaders. This confidence only comes with

practice, practice and practice. The classroom is where you will test

your ability to apply what you've learned and have your perspective

challenged by your learning team, classmates and faculty. Through

hundreds of cases and simulations, you're exposed to several years of

real-life business knowledge in just two transformational years. Our

Cross-Enterprise Leadership approach prepares you with the breadth

and capacity to always see the bigger picture and to lead initiatives

that enhance the whole organization. The NSB MBA is a truly

transformative and inspiring learning experience. It's a bond that will

connect you to an impressive alumni network.

Until you can apply your learning, you haven't learned a thing!

At National School of Business, you learn by doing!

Each day, as you apply your learning, you accelerate your leadership

capabilities. We call these capabilities NSB Leadership Essentials. They

are at the core of everything we do and what truly differentiates our

MBAs.

Leadership in the real world is full of complexity. Problems don't arrive in tidy boxes labeled “marketing” or “finance.”

Our cases are written with real information - sometimes too much, sometimes too little - so you can learn how to uncover

the critical details to make a sound decision.

EmbraceComplexity

We emphasize action in all case discussions and always ask, “What would you do?” At National School of Business,

you'll learn that uncertainty always exists and leaders are required to step up to the challenge and make tough decisions.BeDecisive

Contribution is a required component in all courses. You'll learn how to present your ideas persuasively and defend them

with confidence as they are challenged by your peers and faculty. Communicating in a way that's convincing, yet

diplomatic, is a core skill you develop at NSB.

CommunicatePersuasively

Leadership is about identifying people's strengths, allocating tasks accordingly and keeping your team motivated to

maximize performance. The ability to coach and inspire others is a critical skill and a strong focus at NSB. Case

preparation, reports and simulations are all structured around teamwork.

MaximizeTeam Potential

Business demands that you have the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize conflicting demands and perform under

intense workloads. In our rigorous two-year program, you'll face competing deadlines and learn to make the strategic

trade-offs required to thrive in any fast-paced environment.

test your ideas with your learning team, and new ideas and strategies

will emerge. You'll gain greater confidence in your decision, preparing

you for class itself. The Ivey classroom is the final step, opening up the

debate to diverse perspectives and the surprising conclusion that there

is not “one right answer.” That's why National School of Business is

committed to Case-Method Learning. It's not just teaching, it's a

powerful decision making approach that becomes ingrained into how

you operate. The transformation happens throughout your stay at

NSB, as you dive into hundreds of cases. You'll build amazing problem

solving skills and develop the ability to recognize and seize business

opportunities, making you a rare double threat. And as you'll see next,

when it comes to case learning, it only gets better with the right people

in class.

Experiential learning is the process of learning from experience. It is

learning through reflection on doing. Experiential learning is related to

other forms of experience-based learning such as experiential

education, action learning, adventure learning and cooperative

learning. Though, some of these forms of learning have relation with

each other, they also have differences among them. In business

schools, internship and job shadowing opportunities are some

examples of experiential learning.

In case of education through adventure learning, students

are encouraged to participate in activities with perceived

risks. This learning does not necessarily need to take place

outdoors. At National School of Business, the focus is to

encourage students to participate in trust building

activities, problem solving activities and adventure

activities such as rappelling, dry river crossing, rock

climbing, water rafting etc. NSB focuses on

different types of learning activities to

broaden students knowledge base by

encouraging them to take part in

adventure education, shad-owing

opportunities, problem-based

learning etc.

Industrial visits are an integral part of our program. They are aimed

to giving students an opportunity to understand the working

environment, processes and business practices of an organization.

These visits give students onsite and

practical exposure, which is not

possible through classroom lectures.

NSB, thanks to its extensive network with

industries and business houses, organizes

industrial visits on a regular basis to

reputed multinational and Indian

companies.

The visits are usually guided visits with NSB

faculty members accompanying the students in order

to help them through onsite explanation. Students

are also encouraged to ask questions during these

visits.

NSB's faculty members take the help of

professionals from the industry to help

students understand the various aspects of

the organization visited. Some of the

companies to which visits are frequently

organized include: Coca-cola, Britania, Tata

Personality development is defined as the development of the

organized pattern of behaviours and attitudes that make a person

distinctive. A person's character evolves throughout the life,

although much depends on the inborn traits and

early experiences.

National School of Business focuses on

building a person's communication

skills, emotional strength and instills in

him or her confidence required for

facing the world outside. It also

includes building leadership, managerial

and entrepreneurial skills.

NSB has made personality development and

integral part of its curricula. While regular

training sharpens and deepens a student's

intelligence, personality development builds their

inner strength. NSB runs personality

development sessions concurrently with the

academic program. It organizes a series of

motivational talks by experts and classes to

improve communication skills.

NSB’s programs improve every aspect of a

student's personal, business and spiritual

life. They enhance an individual's level of

commitment to society, inculcate ethical

values, improve interpersonal skills and

develop a positive attitude. NSB has

ness plans & business models. The event was held at IIIT,

Bangalore, on 12th October, 2012.

Mrs. Vasanti Venugopal (Former Head, Department of Commerce

at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore) was the featured speaker

who inspired budding entrepreneurs. Students had the oppor-

tunity of listening to Prof. S Sadagopan (Founder

Director, IIITB), who delivered the inaugural

speech.

The workshop provided grounding for stu-

dents in terms of building an entrepreneurial

mindset. The bonus of attending the work-

shop was NSBians getting nominated for TATA

First Dot competition.

A different JOURNEYA life transforming workshop by Dr. Meath Conlan

An extraordinary workshop by Dr. Meath Conlan was attended by

NSBians on 13/12/2012 at SAP LABS, Bangalore, one of the most

prestigious corporate houses. Australian-born, Meath has wide

experience of diverse cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. His

mentor and friend of many years was the late Bede Griffiths, an

English Benedictine, who, for over thirty years, resided in and

taught at Sacchidananda Ashram, Shantivanam, in South India.

Through him, Meath's outlook and sensitivity expanded to embrace

a tolerant and inclusive understanding of all philosophies and

spiritual traditions.

The very essence of the workshop was making people understand

life from a broader perspective. The workshop was a unique

experience for NSBians. The session focused on various aspects of

life. It also imparted various relaxation techniques such as Yoga, Yog

Nidra and some quick meditation techniques.

It was a great experience for me at National

School of Business to be transformed from

a business student to a business leader.

The Indian culture, people, environment

and spending my time with different students and staffs were a great

experience. The faculty at National School of Business has great

abilities in making a student understand the concepts of business

management easily. I was trained and counseled by great professors

for my internship.

Enjoyed the culture hereMr. Thibault Bertrand, Exchange Student

from France (Works for At Print, A French Firm in India)

I had a great time at National School of

Business. The school offers excellent

academic facilities and right guidance to

aspiring entrepreneurs. I had the opportunity to interact with the

best professors, students and industry experts. Being a French

national, I enjoyed the cross culture exposure. The students have

come from different parts of India with diverse cultural

backgrounds and it was a great learning experience to

understand their lifestyle and culture. The faculty is a mixture

of academic excellence and industry practice. The Corporate

Relations Cell is highly competent and always available for

us to guide and help. After completing my internship

with ITC group of hotels, I am now associated with a

French company in Bangalore as the chief of

operations. I got what I wanted and I m lucky to be in

India.

I met with an accident in March 2008 and lost my left hand. I was hospitalized

for some time and started wondering whether I would be able to do my MBA. I

called up Prof. Sridhara Murthy, and the conversation I had with him changed

the course of my life. At no point during the talk, he uttered a word of

discouragement nor did he show any sympathy. Every word that he spoke was

highly motivating and inspiring. He told me to join the course af ter complete

recovery. National School of Business has given me the courage to face life and

overcome obstacles. The words of one of our professors always ring in my ears,

'Try to fail, but don't fail to try.'

I asked ‘Sir, can

I do MBA?’

He said 'Why not?'

“What sets worlds in motion is the interplay of

differences, their attractions and repulsions. Life

is plurality, death is uniformity. By suppressing

differences and peculiarities, by eliminating

Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneurial story of Dr.

Yadunandan is a quick tale of

success. Groomed and mentored

at National School of Business,

Dr. Yadunandan gave wings to

his entrepreneurial dreams as

soon as he passed his MBA. It

didn't take much time for him to

put his plan into action. His

business idea was simple yet

filled the gap existed in the

market. Who would say 'no' to delicious rolls served quickly at

competitive prices? His 'Rolls on Wheels' was thus born and had

immediate takers. Set up in February, and still to celebrate its 2nd

anniversary, Rolls and Wheels already has 8 outlets and is doing a

roaring business of Rs. 24 million annually.

60

“What I am today is

because of my mentor,

Prof. Sridhara Murthy. He

guided me to pursue my

MBA in France and

mentored me

meticulously to

become an

entrepreneur in the

ever-growing food

industry. I owe

him a lot” - Dr.

Yadunandan

Yadunandan has an automated centralized kitchen which caters to

all the 8 outlets. He employs over 35 people and believes that

'taste, quality, hygiene and quick service' are the key ingredients of

his success. The average time of service is just 2 minutes.

Yadunadnan has plans to set up 25 outlets by the end of 2013. He

also plans to engage franchises to accelerate expansion. His vision

is to be a pioneer in the quick service restaurant model and provide

high quality, nutritious food in a hygienic way. He intends to

automate the entire production process and establish a strong cold

chain network to enhance the shelf life and freshness of the

products. Yadunandnan has a strong appetite for developing tasty

recipes. He is setting up a state-of-the-art-kitchen, which can cater

to 50 to 60 outlets. He wants to automate the whole process to

avoid contamination. His immediate plans are standardization of

products, billing procedures and development of

a franchise manual.

Safwan MM – From God's Own CountrySafwan MM, who hails from Kerala, did his MBA at National

School of Business and went back to 'God's Own Country' for

entrepreneurial inspiration. He established Global Associates to

market bottled coconut water and set up a production plant

in Manjeshwar, Kerala. His state-of-the-art plant processes

and packages tender coconut water in PP bottles and the

product will be marketed in India and abroad.

Saftwan believes that bottled tender coconut water

has immense potential, as a natural energy and sports drink. Global associates

will focus on quality and hygiene and their process helps tender coconut

water stay fresh and protected from the destabilizing effects of light and

oxygen for 9-12 months and keeps its natural taste and nutritional

values intact. The company has chosen the PP bottles for

packaging because they are convenient to carry and easily

storable. Safwan says that this technology also offers the

advantages of durability, reseal ability, the ability to place

the product on ice and need of less space for the retailer to

stack the product in the outlets.

Harsha of WINDOORS - Exploring Windows of Opportunities

Harsha K P has ventured into

manufacturing of UPVC doors and

windows. He believes that all the

training programs, which he

underwent at National School of

Business will help him carve out a

niche in the industry. He says

that National School of

Business provides just the right kind of platform

for budding entrepreneurs to take off and NSB's

unique initiatives such as DISHA etc. have skillfully

nurtured his entrepreneurial aspirations.

Harsha wants to provide practical and aesthetic solutions to

modern homes. He says that UPVA is a new concept and can

significantly reduce noise levels in houses with sound proof

technology. He would like to help people lead quality life in

cities through this product. He has set up a design and

fabrication plant at Bommasandra industrial area in Bangalore.

“History will have to record that the

greatest tragedy of this period of social

transition was not the strident clamor of the

bad people, but the appalling silence of the

good people.”- Martin Luther King, Jr.

In today's economy, management graduates are faced with one of the

most challenging job markets in the annals of world history. They

need to update their job search strategy to stand a chance. An

innovative way to do this is to add social media to the mix.

The concept of social media club today is quite different from what it

was only a few years ago. Social media today is not just about

updating status or posting pictures from a party held on the previous

night. Instead it is changing the way we search for jobs, communicate,

learn, share and do business.

There is an imperative today to include the social media in the

framework of higher education because it is literally changing the

world. The Social Media Club at National School of Business was

formed to facilitate interaction among members to explore key issues

facing our society as technologies transform the way we connect,

communicate, collaborate and relate to each other. The Club enables

you to explore your personal and professional passions by helping you

connect with a community of your peers based on both geography and

areas of interest. Our club will ensure that the world of social media

does not become an echo chamber of self-reinforcing thoughts, but is

instead fueled by diversity of opinions and perspectives.

We are starting a discussion on how membership in Social Media Club

can serve as a 'trusted mark' for people to know that someone is

ethical, understands social media and is committed to the

advancement of the industry. Our club has gone beyond being a buzz

phrase and has sparked widespread curiosity and interest in our

network. Needless to say, our students and faculty are now eager to

learn about and use interactive social media tools.

A film is-or should be more like music than like fiction. It should be a

progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the

emotion, the meaning, all that comes later. By far the most celebrated

club among all clubs of National School of Business, the Movie Club

occupies a special place in every student's heart. Its tremendous

popularity can be gauged by the fact that it has more members than

any other club.

It has become a trend that everyone in the college would join the

officially inaugurated on 14th September 2012. The club's vision

is to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship among the

students and make National School of Business, a

sports talents of its students all over India.

The Disciple with a NEVER SAY DIE attitude

Ekalavya was the disciple of Guru Dronacharya with a 'never say die'

attitude, unshakeable confidence and uncompromising devotion. The

name aptly echoes the spirit of our sports club.

The logo has the visual of wings of Eagle. Eagle is considered as one of

the most powerful birds. The wings suggest crossing boundaries and

the hunger to achieve more. The shield at the centre depicts winning

attitude and icons in the shield at the centre depict all track and field

events. The blue colour of the wings signifies 'sky is the limit', the

orange colour signifies 'high on energy', and 'vigour', and the red

colour of the font signifies radiance.

Activities

On the 16th &17th of Oct 2012, EKALAVYA had organised the

We reached the redBus office in Domlur (old Airport road) quite early

and were received warmly by the staff.

After a quick and brief introduction, we were taken for a tour of the

campus and Mr. Phanindra was modest enough to accompany us

throughout the tour.

In about an hour's tour, we were introduced to over six departments,

where the heads of each department passionately explained the

functions of their departments. We got a good insight into the

organization and were amazed by the quality of work they do. Finally

we arrived at the moment for which we were waiting for since last two

days. We had a meeting with Mr. Phanindra for about 30 minutes and

had a brisk exchange of views.

Mr. Phanindra and his team didn't taste the success easily, though their

idea was novel. The first few months were really hard and tested

their nerves. They canvassed on streets and were using all mediums to

reach out to people to increase the traffic on their site. After few

months of struggle, they started tasting the success. They haven't

looked back since then.

We were pleasantly surprised when NSB announced our names for this

assignment. We were clueless about what it would take to meet one of

the fastest growing companies in the world. When the panel headed

by Prof. Sridhar Murthy chose us, the clock started ticking and we just

had less than 48 hours to prepare and conduct the interview. We

collated information about redBus, its founders and growth story. We

did extensive research on the entrepreneurial skills of Mr. Phanindra

and had prepared a list of questions to ask him during our meeting.

RedBus is working out of 3 campuses, which are closely located to

each other in Domlur. The first campus (incidentally where redBus was

started) houses HR function and leadership team. The second campus

has Call Center, Quality control, training and IT (Pilani Soft).

The third campus houses Analytics and Bus operator co-ordination

department. RedBus team in analytics department would slice and

dice the data as received from various sources to check their

performance (as redBus is heavily dependent on internet traffic).

Although redBus is a young company, their growth in a span of six

years has been phenomenal. They have grown organically and have

over 500+ employees who are highly organized and have

collaborative departments, which provide crucial support required by

their business.

Introduction

redBus is the largest online bus ticketing company in

India. It has the largest network of bus operators (350+

and growing) and provides over 10000+ (and

growing) routes across the Indian map. It was

founded by three ex-BITS Pilani Phanindra

Sama, Charan Padmaraju and

Sudhakar Pasupunuri in 2006.

NSB: What motivated to drive this initiative?

Phanindra: I am a self-motivated person since beginning and it is

growing every day. Luckily, my entire team is motivated and going

strong.

Phanindra: During early years, we took lots of risks to grow this

organization, but off late, we are more cautious and are hiring

experienced people, so that they would bring in a lot of value

additions to the table.

Phanindra: Every day is a challenge to us. There is no day when a

challenge or risk does not exist. Since day one, we have been

challenged to sell a seat which is our core sustenance model.

NSB: Is redBus leadership team a risk taking one or a safe playing one

with lots of planning done much before any decision is taken?

NSB: What are the major challenges faced by redBus?

Excerpts of the meeting

NSB: What would be your strategy for the next 5 years?

NSB: How would you handle conflicts within your organization, as

you have a dual reporting mechanism?

NSB: How are you sustaining the growth rate at redBus?

Phanindra: We have to predict accurately and staff appropriately. We

have been learning on this and so far we have been successful. Also,

we are yet to reach the critical mass to take redBus to the next level.

Phanindra: We have purposefully built this model, for better

oversight, but it is inevitable, and we would resolve conflicts as and

when they occur.

Phanindra: If we advertise through bus or other media, we can

generate more revenue; but we are trying not to go overboard. Our

approach is to take a more sustained and continuous growth path so

that our revenues are predictable and give confidence to investors.
