DESCRIPTION
National Park Community College Library Newsletter Aug/Sept 2012
Citation preview
It’s been fun and games @ the
NPCC Library this summer!
We closed the first 2 weeks to
renovate. A bit traumatic to
see 25,000 books and 1240
shelves on the floor, I must say!
However, we are proud of our
new look—stop by and see for
yourself.
You’ll notice new paint and
carpet, reupholstered (and
comfortable!) chairs, new com-
puter chairs and furniture, and
additional viewing/study
rooms. Since shelves were
being moved anyway, we re -
arranged to create a bigger
reading room, highlight our
Arkansas books, and add
some display space.
Displays on the great America
sport of baseball and the
Olympics made for good sum-
mer reading. A crazy hard jig-
saw puzzle was a popular pas-
time as well. In fact, working in
a Library is a lot like a puzzle
— lots of little pieces to put
together in just the right place
to make it all fit into a lovely
big picture.
In the spirit of cleaning house,
we withdrew over 1400 old
books. Primarily old text-
books, duplicates, and out of
date material. These will be
offered for sale to students at
bargain prices in September.
The Library staff has been
focusing on ebooks and trying
to figure out how best to incor-
porate digital information into
our existing collections.
Brenda Van Dusen completed
a 4-session online course, “All
You Need to Know about E-
reader Service in Your Li-
brary”. Kristin Quintanilla met
with vendors, attended work-
shops, and learned how other
libraries were coping in June
at the American Library Asso-
ciation Convention in Ana-
heim, CA.
In this issue, we discuss what
we are currently offering in
ebooks and what’s new.
Remember, your Library has
lots of ways to help make your
semester easier.
See you soon!

Overwhelmed and con-
fused by all the new ebook
technology? We under-
stand. That’s why your
campus library is getting
familiar with the newest
equipment and what’s com-
ing in the future. We cur-
rently have about the same
number of ebooks as we do
books in print. Just think,
twice as many books in the
same amount of space! Find
the ebooks in our catalog.
You can now download our
ebooks to your computer
or ebook reader for a 14
day period. We also have
a few Kindles for checkout.
When you borrow one you
are carrying 72 books (at
present) in one small pack-
age, all for your reading
enjoyment. Our online
catalog shows what titles
are on our Kindles: search
“Kindle titles”.
First time with a Kindle?
We’re happy to give you a
short lesson.
We often hear that you just
like the feel of a book in
your hands or the smell of a
newly purchased book, but
the reality is that ebooks
are here to stay. And they
do offer many advantages
both for research and en-
joyment. Know that your
library staff is keeping up
with this technology and
wants to help you with it in
any way we can.
All ya gotta do is ask!

Library Therapy ...by Ann Wilson
Ereaders, ebooks, egads! ...by Kristin Quintanilla
I went over to the library
and exclaimed to Kristin…
that the world…as we know
it, had ended! I was being a
little bit funny…and a little
bit serious. I was really
worried…what if I could
never settle down to read
again. For the first time in
my life!! She quietly reas-
sured me while finding a
stash of about five books
she thought I would like to
try.
And, I’m happy to say, the
dry spell has, indeed,
ended. Libraries are such
good things…for so many
reasons!
As many on the campus
know…I received a little
unexpected gift in March of
this year…a pacemaker.
Thank goodness for modern
medicine…but I have had
some unexpected experi-
ences as a result. One of the
good surprises has been a
burst of energy that seemed
to happen about three
months after the procedure.
The downside being that
even though I am a lifelong
reader…often saying that I
am the NPCC Library’s best
customer…I went through
about three weeks where I
was finding it hard to sit still
and read. I could not find
anything to read that inter-
ested me…for the first time
ever in my life.
Libraries are such
good things…for so
many reasons!
Ebooks are hotter
than chili peppers!
