I often refer to the apt quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” I like to

take a little artistic liberty with this famous phrase and make it my own, as I believe, “The journey

is everything!” The older and (hopefully) wiser I become, the more I see just how important this

thought process is, and how it can shape our lives in this busy world we live in. How many times

do we put things off because of time constraints? How often do we shut down an exciting holiday

idea because the money could be better spent on something else? How often do we still seek out

new exciting experiences?

As I am sitting at my desk at home, I think back at how I arrived where I am today (both physically

and emotionally) and am far more aware of our connectivity to everyone and everything on the planet.

On November 1st 2012, I will have been in the U.S. for 10 years…and what an incredible journey it

has been!

As a young guy from South Africa, I was brought up in a very strict, private boarding school. Our

television time was limited to an hour a day, furthermore, television was only allowed in our country

when I was in high school. The U.S. and its “Hollywood” seemed like another planet to us. Dazzlingly

different in every sense! Wildly exciting and decadent in many ways! So full of promise for a great

way of life!

I remember the day I landed at Miami International Airport, 10 years ago, to start a journey that was

founded on a dream of building a better future. I remember sitting on the plane looking out of the tiny

window, face pressed to the pane, watching the miniature cars scurrying around below us like ants.

At that moment I wondered what destiny had in store for me. In truth, I had no idea what lay ahead.

I had Debbie (my wife) by my side, and a belief that we were on this great adventure together. I was

scared of the unknown, yet wildly excited at the same time.

I left behind a country, belief system and culture that I loved. Even now, at times I miss it so much it

hurts. South Africa will always be in my blood. I love the smell of the highveld rain on the hot ground,

walking through the wild bush, cooking dinner over a camp fire in the Drakensberg (the mountains

of the dragons), fishing at a stream while eagles circled overhead, watching rugby, eating Biltong

(similar to beef jerky), the old campfire songs, my friends, my family, my way of life and the food!

When I was young, I would never have believed that ‘my reality’ (a kid playing in the streets with his

friends) would change as drastically as it has. Fear and hate ensued over the years and people now

build 10 feet walls, covered with barbed wire, to protect themselves and their homes in South Africa.

One thing I know for certain is that in today’s world, nothing stays the same for any length of time.

A new, faster paced world awaits us now. But I also realize that although South Africa is still a huge

part of me, it’s no longer my home. This is my home now! I also believe I appreciate ‘my reality’ far

more now than ever before. Once having the experience of losing it, only to find it again in a far off

place, called the U.S.A.

Ten years! It’s amazing the things one is able to accomplish in this time. Build businesses, make

money, lose money, run marathons, cycle tours, walk on fire, travel to all corners of the globe, meet

famous people (the Dali lama), and walk the Andes with a Sharman. I have loved, laughed, cried,

cursed, rejoiced, mourned and commiserated. In ten years, we can pack in a lifetime, which goes

by in an instant.

Enjoying the journey is what it is all about, because who knows what tomorrow holds for us. My

greatest joys on a daily basis are celebrating this journey together with my team, my clients landing

a huge job, and the smile and kiss from my wife and daughter lying next to me while I watch the

Chargers on TV. Yes, without a doubt, the journey is everything! With this beautiful thought in mind,

isn’t it great when we realize just how fortunate we are and how perfect life can be!
