November Meeting: Lian Zhen !Lian Quan Zhen is the featured artist for the November meeting. He is a sought-after watercolor and Chi-nese painting artist and teacher in the US and abroad and one of the most popular authors of North Light Books. He started sketching and painting in his childhood and continued it as hobby while practicing medi-cine as a family physician in Canton Province, China. After immigrating to the US in 1985, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1992 and a Master of Architecture Degree in1996.
He taught watercolor outdoor sketching for 8 years at the University of California at Berkeley and has held watercolor and Chinese painting workshops in the US and internationally. He has also been an invited ju-rist for many US watercolor societies and regional shows.
His paintings are featured in magazines such as Watercolor 94 Spring, Splash4, Collectors (Hong Kong) and books of Landscape on Watercolor (UK), Finding Your Visual Voice and Painter's Quick Reference books by North Light Books: Flowers and Blooms, Dogs and Cats, Birds and Butterflies, Landscapes and Drawing and Painting Animals - the Essential Guide. !Lian’s other books published by North Light Books are: The Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Wa-tercolor, 2000; Chinese Watercolor Techniques - Painting Animals, 2004; Chinese Watercolor Techniques for Exquisite Flowers, 2009; and Chinese Landscape Techniques for Watercolor, 2013. In 2014, North Light Books is printing a coffee table book with collection of Lian's paintings. !Mark your calendars for the November 11th meeting to see Lian’s demo.
!Thank you, Beverly Boren, for the demo at our October meeting. For those of us fortunate !enough to be at the meeting it was not only an informative demo but also a very entertaining one as well. It’s not often an artist can simplify both the reference photo and the information presented while being en-tertaining. In other words, Beverly was able to paint, talk and tell jokes all at the same time.!!Deadline looming: Nov. 15th is the deadline to get in your entries for the Western Federation Exhibition. Get the prospectus and check out all of the details on our website home page. You’ll find the information in the right column under the Western Fed banner. Let’s make sure SWS is well represented as usual.!!Save the date: Sunday, Dec. 7th from 2:00-4:00 for our annual SWS Holiday Party. This year the party will be held in the Community Room at Midtown Arts Community. Midtown is at 13331 Preston Rd., Dal-las, 75240 (in the old Valley View Mall). Enter the parking lot from Preston Rd. and park near the AMC sign at the top of the building. Enter the mall through doors under the AMC sign you’ll be on the right level for the Community Room. Walk toward the center court and the Large sign, “Gallery at Midtown”. The Community Room is two doors past that large gallery.!!The Christmas party is too fun to miss! Start painting a small painting now so you’ll have a chance to take home a real treasure. For those of you who don’t know, we have a “dirty Santa” sort of painting exchange. You don’t have to participate to attend the party. However, you won’t have a chance of getting a great painting if you don’t bring one to exchange. Everyone brings a snack or beverage and the goodies just flow. It’s a great way to end the year with good friends and good fun.!!SWS has a Public Arts Program for the purpose of organizing opportunities in public spaces for members to exhibit and sell their art. All members are invited to join the program. As venues become available, in-dividual Venue Managers will contact members with venue specific information. Instructions for joining the program are on our website just under the 2015 Western Fed. information. We hope to have an exhi-bition opportunity before the end of the year so get your information and images to Robert McLaughlin, [email protected].
Hope to see you all at our November meeting for a great demo by Lian Zhen. Bring your paintings for the Painting of the Month contest. Also, remember to return any DVDs you have previously checked out.

SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Following a 40-year career in architecture, I am now returning to painting in watercolor. Having retired from the firm of Good, Fulton and Farrell at the end of 2012 -retirement seems busier than imagined.!!Growing up on the high plains of Northwest Oklahoma, drawing and building were always a passion. The realities of farm work, changing weather and the incredible beauty of nature and the serenity of open spaces were defining characteristics of my childhood. A kindly Professor Stephens, who taught architectural rendering at Oklahoma State University, first introduced me to the magic of watercolor. This first encounter with watercolors resulted in my teacher taking my renderings of a Colorado mountain resort scene to the sink and washing off the entire painting. “Let’s try that again,” I remember him saying. Then, gingerly with a couple of strokes of the brush, he created the mountain vista I had originally envisioned! !!Following graduation, marriage to Trish and a move to Atlanta, watercolor activity in serious form waned. Attempting to gain traction in an architectural foundation with the fine firm of Thompson, Ventulett and Stainback seemed to take up most of the time during the 5-years in the Southeast. The allure of those wide-open spaces and the opportunity to help develop the second generation of lead-ership of Corgan Associates Architects brought us to Dallas in 1976. !!Thankfully I learned of the Southwest Watercolor Society and of the teachers that were active at that time. Naomi Brotherton, Mary Hill, Leo Smith and others I had the opportunity to take lessons from and learn the basics of this most allusive medium. Ed Whit-ney’s visit was inspiring! In these early days, a couple of my paintings made the membership shows. !!Architectural practice once again got in the way of painting regularly. But several lessons from those early workshops stuck! That of keeping a sketchbook always handy – what joy that has been! From the early admonitions of Naomi and others, my family now has 40-years of sketchbook memories. Not only do they record workshop and lesson advice, but also are records of all manner of ob-servations, travel, visual diaries, and architectural project studies (from master plans to brick coursing details). A wonderful record they have been and continue to be as the boys, Philip (born 1980) and Graham (born 1983) created treasures in “my” sketchbooks in crayon, chalk, watercolors or whatever was readily at hand…and now, Philip’s children, Ouisie (4) and Michael (1) are following in the family tradition of drawing in PoppU’s sketchbook.!!Departing Corgan Associates and joining Good, Fulton and Farrell in 1993, my architectural work was focused on institutional work. Clients such as Southern Methodist University, Texas A&M University, The Hockaday School and St. Mark’s School of Texas, High-land Park Independent School District and many other fine collegiate and secondary schools as well as ecclesiastical clients such as First United Methodist Church of Dallas and Richardson, First Baptist Dallas, Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Good Shep-herd School and church provided opportunities to paint master plans and project renderings.!!Continued on next page!

Spotlight and EVENTS
One-day Paint Out - The Dallas Arboretum - Redux!!Since we had the threat of rain for our October Paint Out at the Arboretum, and few attended, we are planning a “Return to The Ar-boretum” for our November Paint Out. More of the flowers should be in bloom, and by then, the trees should have changed colors, too.! !The date will be Saturday, November 15, beginning at 9:00 am when The Arboretum opens. We will paint until Noon, with a get-to-gether at that time to show our work. We will meet at Noon at the Amphitheater - #19 on the map http://www.dallasarboretum.org/visit/map - bring a sack lunch or buy food from vendors if you wish.! !If you want to be added to the Plein Air e-mail list, or need to update your e-mail address, send a note to Bill Johnson at [email protected].! !Unless you are a member of The Arboretum, the entry fee is $12 for Seniors, $15 for Adults, $10 for Children; parking is free for members – on-site self parking is $10; discounted parking available on-line for $5.00. For more information about the Arboretum, including location and maps, visit: http://www.dallasarboretum.org.! !We look forward to seeing you there! !!Bill Johnson
In 1993 I was elevated to the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects and served as the Dallas Chapter Presi-dent in 1997 and as the President of the Texas Society of Architects in 2002. From 2003 to 2006, I served on the national Board of Directors for the AIA in Washington, D.C. !!With Architectural projects usually taking 4-5 years from conception to completion, watercolor allowed almost instantaneous artis-tic expression and has great appeal as a delightful contrast to the intricacies demanded of the former. !!Now with retirement, painting is taking it’s place along side chasing grandchildren; chasing cattle at our ranch near Oakwood, Texas; serving as President of the Texas Architectural Foundation and the Dallas Architectural Foundation; Building Committee activities for the 508 Park Avenue Encore Park (where Robert Johnson – Blues musician last recorded in 1937) and the Dallas Holocaust Museum building committee…along with reading books that have piled up in the library, occasional golf…AND now serving as your SWS workshop coordinator this year fills a day nicely!!!I am grateful to get back involved with SWS after a 35-year hiatus and eagerly await the next “wash”. My website and practice is up and running at Weigand Art & Architecture and at www.weigandaa.com.
