Connecting the Subaltern to other Class Concepts

Objective: SWBAT…Identify and explain how subaltern relates to colonialism, post-colonialism, other unit vocabulary, and the novel, Q & A.

Relationships between Vocab. word subaltern, other vocab.

words and the novel

• Subaltern and agency are connected because sometimes Ram felt he had to transgress and break moral codes and he had to use agency to do that.

• Ram is sensitive to the suffering of others and this sensitivities is a flaw– He thinks about his people (the poor, the oppressed, the subaltern) before he thinks of himself.

• In the novel Ram encountered many problems that were hard to deal with and therefore Ram was a subaltern-- these problems caused him to be oppressed, or related to the oppression of people in India.

• Ram represents the subaltern voice in the novel– Example– he is treated as a subaltern when he is accused of cheating and no one believes that he could have won the game show and had that kind of knowledge because he is poor.

• Subaltern, colonialism and post-colonialism all lead into each other– the colonization of a country leads to silence and colonial power is used against the colonized people which leads them to be a subaltern group– the colonizers had a bad effect on them and this has negative effects– post-colonialism examines these effects.

• Connection between subaltern and agency: being subaltern means you have no agency because it has been taken away from you because of rules that prevent you from doing things.

• Ram represents the subaltern voice in the novel because he speaks for people of India who have been colonized and live in the slums.

• A lot of places that have been colonized have more oppressed or subaltern people than before colonialism.

Objective: SWBATIdentify relationships between three unit two vocabulary words and connect their understanding of these two words to the themes in the novel.

Objective: SWBAT…1. Generate a thesis statement that follows the thesis statement rubric.2. Compose an outline of their Q & A essay in preparation for writing their first draft.

What you will be working on today…• Today, students will be working on their outlines for their essays on Q & A. There are

two assignments students should work on during this period:

1) Students need to select a prompt and write a thesis statement for it. They should do this during the first 10 minutes of the period, then use the rest of the time to work on assignment #2.

2) Students need to create an essay outline by using the packet provided (some students received one yesterday, most did not). Please take three minutes at the beginning of the period to go through the packet with students (it is fairly self-explanatory). Students need to follow the guidelines of the packet to outline their introduction, three body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each part of these paragraphs is described in the packet. This outline is due tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1st.

• For the outline, students may write an outline according to their own thesis statement OR, if they do not believe their thesis statement is at a '3' level, they may use one of the four thesis statements provided (see handout). I will be grading their thesis statements tonight and if they do not score a 3 or 4, they will be required to use one of the four thesis statements provided.

On the following slides are instructions for the essay outline.

• It is very important you have this outline COMPLETED for tomorrow’s class, as you will begin writing your essay.

• If you need extra help or you need to make-up the Unit 2 test, I will be in the Learning Commons, today after school until 4.15pm.

We see this early in the novel when he tries to protect Gudiya, later when he saves Meenakshi and then again when he tries to seek revenge on Prem Kumar for his abuses on Neelima Kumari.

• In the novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup, family is portrayed as a hindrance or a burden for most of the young adults in the novel. This idea is exemplified by Gudiya’s relationship with her father, through the inaction and ineffectiveness of Meenakshi’s father and through the relationship between Father Timothy and his secret son Ian.

• The novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup is about the adolescent struggle for agency in an adult world. Throughout the story, Ram struggles against the limitations of his culture and the adults who try to enforce the cultural norms. Ram transgresses these norms repeatedly in an attempt to be his own agent.

– Your AMAZING Thesis Statement: this is the heart of your essay. EVERYTHING connects to it!

Objective: SWBATExplain and identify the elements of an introductory paragraph.

All teenagers wrestle the adults in their lives for control over their identities. They push the boundaries established by the culture that adult authorities have created. This is true in life as well as in the novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup. In this book, the teenagers are struggling against the oppression of the adult world and the culture that the adult world is policing. Throughout the story, Ram, the teenage narrator, struggles against the boundaries of his culture and the adults who try to enforce the cultural norms of post-colonial India. Ram transgresses these norms repeatedly in an attempt to be his own agent and to change the rules of this adult world. We see evidence of this in the beginning of the novel when Ram goes against the landlord’s warning not to get involved in the problems of Gudiya’s family, when he refuses to be the obedient and silent young servant for the Taylors, and again when he refuses to accept Nita’s place within her cultural tradition. Throughout all of these examples, Ram clearly exemplifies an agent of change. Objective: SWBATAnalyze an exemplar introduction of a sample Q & A essay.

Thesis Statement: In the novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup shows that one’s true family is created by friendship rather than blood. This message is conveyed through Ram’s relationship with his friends and the few adults who opted to take care of him.

After Ram flees Mumbai, he ends up working for and living with the Taylors. The Taylors are an Australian family living in India as diplomats. Ram is impressed with their wealth and fascinated by their Western lifestyle. The Taylors trust Ram and he becomes closer to them than to the other servants. He even begins to imagine that they are his real family, “Although I live in the servants’ quarters, The Taylors treat me almost as part of the family” (p. 110). Ram’s use of the word “almost” is important. The Taylors are condescending towards Ram and treat him more like a pet than family. A part of Ram realizes this and this is evident in his use of the word “almost”, but he has never had a real family before and is happy to have any kind of family connection, even a false one.

Notes on Contextualization

What is Contextualization?• Explanation of what is going on in a larger text before and after you insert a

quote into a piece of writing so that the quote makes sense to the reader of your essay (even if they didn’t read the book you’re writing about).

How do I do it? • Introduce your quote by briefly explaining what was happening in the book

at the time of your quote (without going into too much plot summary). • Tell the reader who is speaking in the quote, who they are speaking to, what

their relationship is. Where do I do it? • In all three body paragraphs of your essay– both before and after the quote. • Your contextualization leads into your analysis of the quote (explanation of

how the quote supports your thesis and why it’s important).

Objective: SWBATSummarize the elements of effective contextualization and explain the purpose of contextualizing quotes in the body paragraphs of an essay.

Partner Work: Contextualizing a key quote

from the novel

Directions: Work with a partner to write a body paragraph using the quote that you both identified as related to your thesis statement.

1. Start your paragraph by introducing the quote: explain what was happening at this

point in the novel. 2. Explain who is speaking, or who the quote is about. 3. Explain why this is an important quote. (this leads you into the first part of your

analysis).

Example: After Ram flees Mumbai, he ends up working for and living with the Taylors. The Taylors are an Australian family living in India as diplomats. Ram is impressed with their wealth and fascinated by their Western lifestyle. The Taylors trust Ram and he becomes closer to them than to the other servants.
