COUGAR CHRONICLES November 2019 Newsletter
Mrs. Rogers, Principal
Mrs. Corbett, Assistant Principal
Copper Beech Elementary School 825 N. Easton Road
Glenside, PA 19038
Happy October Copper Beech Families,
Looking back on October, I’m amazed
how it flew by in a beautiful swirl of green, gold,
and browns. Finishing the month with a wonderful
Halloween celebration, our students were aglow
with an excited momentum that brought smiles to
our faces and filled our hearts with joy.
Looking ahead to November, our plans
include service learning projects, a PTA Book Fair,
Peace Week, and American Education Week.
Each of these events hold deep learning
opportunities for our students, in addition to our
robust reading, writing and mathematics
curriculum.
Thanks for all that you do for our children,
you are the reason we smile everyday.
Warmly,
Fatima Rogers

Dear Parents and Students,
On Thursday, November 14th, Copper Beech
would like to encourage students and staff to
wear blue for Diabetes Awareness Day. By
wearing blue, we raise awareness of the
impact that diabetes has on students and
families in the Copper Beech community and
around the world. CB C.A.R.E.S. by wearing
blue… and you should too!
Please know that participation in this endeavor is
optional and at the discretion of our families.
Dear Copper Beech Families,
Many of our families may know, Mr. Dick Stoudt, is a retired ASD bus driver. Although recently retired, he still wears many hats and among them is “Chuckles the Clown”. For the past 45 years, Chuckles has visited many local hospitals during the holiday season to spread joy by delivering NEW stuffed teddy bears and animals to more than 1000 patients young and old. This year, as in the past, we are asking Copper Beech students, parents, and teachers to donate NEW teddy bears and stuffed animals. The program will be called “Bears That Care” and will run from November 18th through November 22nd. Please help us assist “Chuckles the Clown” by bringing in a NEW teddy bear or stuffed animal to school during this time. Bear collection bins will be placed in front of Mrs. Nicholson’s, Mrs. Crompton’s and Mrs. Gerson’s classrooms. Doing kind and thoughtful deeds for others in need makes us feel good. At this time of year, it is especially comforting to know we have helped to make others smile and feel loved. Thank you for helping Mr. Stoudt as he completes his 45th year as Chuckles the Clown. In past years, Copper Beech collected over 100 bears and we would like to exceed that amount this year.
Please know that participation in this endeavor is
Optional and at the discretion of our families. It is intended to be a service project for those families
interested in participating.
What is Service Learning?
Service Learning helps students build character by allowing
them to foster and develop personal values, beliefs
awareness, self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of
empathy and social responsibility. It is a teaching model
that uses community service as a vehicle to help students
reach their academic goals and objectives. Service
learning is based on reciprocal relationship in which service
in the community reinforces and strengthens learning in the
classroom, and classroom experiences reinforce and
strengthen interaction in the community.
Abington School District students perform various types of
service including formal, school-based service learning
projects, volunteer work at hospitals, work with younger
children, and work with the elderly in nursing homes. Other
projects include service with community organizations such
as the SPCA or Kiwanis Club. Informal projects, especially for
younger children, may include individual efforts to assist
family members with their service projects and helping
neighbors. Copper Beech will offer opportunities
throughout the year for your student to earn service
learning hours as well. Visit Abington School District’s
website and search Service Learning K-8 for a more
comprehensive list of service learning opportunities for your
child.
Students are recognized for their service at the end of the
school year. Below is the chart for the 2017-2018 President’s
Volunteer Service Award based on age and hours of
service. All service learning logs are due 9:00 a.m. on May
