WEG Wrap-Up & Holiday Gift Guide
Letter from the EditorThe first ever U.S. based World Equestrian Games have come & gone.
The FEI Bureau recently awarded the 2014 FEI WEG to Normandie, France. This will be the seventh edition of the FEI World Equestrian Games and the first one to be held in France. If you missed the opportunity to attend the 2010 WEG, a trip to France sounds like a fantastic idea.
I'm so very proud to know and meet some of the nation's finest equestrians who live right here in Florida. Amazing what can happen with a little effort and a lot of “determination”. I'm echoing the wise words of our November Family Affair subject, Stacia Bejarano. We are blessed with a large number of families who are admired and respected for their success in running a professional horse business. The Family Affair article is given to one family every month. If you or someone you know is a good fit for 'A Family Affair', please let us know.
The 2011 Winter Show Season is upon us! Look for helpful tips and articles in our December showing issue, featuring Dana Noga from Lone Palm Stables in Ocala. December is a great time to congratulate riders/trainers/owners on a job well done in 2010 or to wish luck to a new rider & horse team for 2011. Please look for Central Florida Equestrian magazine during the FL winter circuits- The CFHJA Dec show, HITS Post Time Farm, WEF, TEF, Fox Lea and most of the local shows & associations.
Just a reminder, our name will change to Florida Equestrian in the January issue. This only means additional or statewide coverage of the people & the news that YOU want to read about. The website address will become
www.FLRide.com. Central Florida makes up the majority of permanent resident FL Equestrians, so much of the content will continue to involve C FL.
Thank you for reading Central Florida Equestrian magazine. Happy Riding,

Thea Wilcox made a promise to give back to children and their families who were in the throes of chronic childhood illness.
Her promise sprung from her own personal experiences with a chronically ill child and a secret pact she made with God to return to these hospital corridors if the child, dear to her, survived. The child survived, but the promise was swept under the demands of life. That was, until Thea found a very special pony just as she neared retirement.
When Thea found her pony, who she named Puddleby, she had intended to use him as a small hunter pony, but within the first week of owning him she had a dream reminding her of her promise to "someday" give back. At first, she ignored the promptings. Then, in another dream, the idea for a book came to her. After that, whether sleeping, driving in her car,
working…no matter what she was doing, all through the day and night a grand plan took root. The plan for "Puddleby" had grown so large that she grasped it, with both hands, and prepared for the ride.
The book is a diary of sorts that Thea recorded during the initial five months that she owned Puddleby. During the months it took to write the book, the characters defined themselves and took on their own personalities.
Much of the book is based on actual people and true events. For example, Windham Hill Farm, the farm where the story takes place, once rescued three pigs.
The lore of those pigs prompted the author to include one in her story. But the name of the pig….that had to be created.
At first the name changed in the manuscript on a weekly basis, but then as the pig's personality took a life of its own, the name "Smooch" came to Thea's mind and she immediately knew it was the perfect name.
The proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to "Going Miles for Smiles," a non-profit foundation, established by Thea and Winton Wilcox, her husband, as a means to carry out her promise to give back. If you have any questions for Thea, you may contact her via her email:

can look into a little of his life including his friends, training and a few other tidbits!

Blue Centaur, Inc. is an artistic collaboration between Amalia and Cristobal Castro, two passionate and highly educated artists who were brought together by their love of art.
www.bluecentaur.com
The couple began their adventure together in Bogotá, Colombia when Amalia was a fine arts majorand Cristobal was one of the most celebrated young artists in Colombia. At the social club bothfamilies attended, their mothers met and decided the children should meet. Amalia came home fromclass one day only to find “my hero sitting in my house. I was speechless!” The two have been togetherever since. Cristobal was a part of Amalia’s thesis for her Master of Fine Arts degree at University LosAndes (Bogotá). When she completed her masters studies in communications they married. Educatedat the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Visuels, La Cambre, in Brussels, Belgium, wherehe studied farrier arts and metal sculpture, Cristobal worked on many horses of varying disciplineswhile pursuing his art. A jumper rider himself, he understands the importance of balance in the feetenabling the horse to achieve its full potential. Attracted to Ocala by the diverse horse community,Cristobal and Amalia set up Blue Centaur as an outlet for their creative endeavors. The logo for BlueCentaur was created by Cristobal’s father, an architect and graphics artist, and was inspired by the“Blue Rider” Expressionists movement in Europe. “When my father gave us the design, it was a veryimportant moment for us.” It was a culmination of their passion for horses, art and family. Cristobal:“There is no difference between what I do as a horse shoer and what I do as an artist. Art is solving aproblem, and for me, that is what I am interested in.” Amalia: “We do so many things together. Henurtures my work. I nurture his. The creative process is very important to us both.” Cristobal’s workshave been exhibited in Colombia, Belgium and Venezuela, as well as in New York and Florida. Amaliadesigns graphics and websites for some of the most prestigious names in the horse community, including Charles Owen, Grey Fox Farm, Chester Weber and Live Oak International. After a successfulmanagement career withNeiman Marcus, Saks FifthAvenue and Gucci, Jane Hearttook a leap of faith anddecided to follow her heartand create a business of herown.“Horses were always a passionfor me, and one of my very favorite
outfits as a child wasthat of a cowgirl complete with red felt hat! Jewelry wasanother passion developed during my retailing days, andwhen I could not find a horse head belt buckle that I liked,I decided to design my own. From there the Collectionshave grown as well as endured, and new designs arecontinually added. ““In 2008 I was very privileged to announce my licensedjewelry for Barbaro. A portion of the proceeds benefits theFund for Laminitis Research at the University of PA Schoolof Veterinary Medicine. I live in Scottsdale, AZ with myhusband Dennis. He often travels with me and is theofficial “jewelry polisher” and my helpful advisor. Homeschoolers spenda day at the farmBy Robin George
On Tuesday, Sept. 21st, the HomewardBound home school group took a fieldtrip to Sunnybrook Farm in WinterGarden. As part of the Contendersand Keepers study program, thechildren have been studyinghorsemanship all month. A trip to seehow a real horse stable operatessummed up the lessons. RebeccaBerry, owner and caretaker ofSunnybrook Farm, was kind enough tooffer her facility for the class to visit. The children, ranging in age from firstgrade to sixth grade, learned aboutsome of the many different breeds ofhorses and some general differencesbetween them, the many differentkinds of tack used depending on thediscipline, the coloring and markingsof horses, and about health care ofhorses including grooming andfeeding. Part of the health careaspect of the class was learning howto take care of the feet. RobertGeorge, a local farrier, donated his
time to do a demonstration for theclass. The children watched Mr.George shoe a horse and listen to himexplain the importance of good hoofcare. After a question and answersession it was down to the dirty work. The class was able to apply what theylearned before the trip aboutgrooming a horse by doing somehands on combing of the mane, brushing the coat, and picking out thefeet. Another fun activity theyparticipated in was the care andcleaning of a farm. This includedpicking out the stalls, sweeping thecorridors and organizing the hayroom. Some of the children enjoyedthis but the general consensus wasthat cleaning up manure was “for thebirds”.The final and most thrilling part of theday was helping to tack and then ridea horse. A 25 year old blue roanlesson horse by the name of Marleywas a very willing participant. Someof the children had the previousprivilege of riding, but for many ofthem it was a first. The smiles couldn’thave been bigger and everyoneenjoyed a fabulous day on the farm.
