For this Report, Distimo partnered with Skyhook Wireless. The combination of Skyhooks location based application list with

Distimos app store metrics gives unique insights in these types of applications.

The Apple App Store has the largest proportion of paid location based applications (57%), with BlackBerry coming second (49%)

and Google Android Market third (21%).

Prices of Maps & Navigation applications on BlackBerry App World decreased from $16.13 in September to $13.74 (-14.8%)

in November, while the average prices on Apple App Store and Google Android Market remained fairly stable despite the

announcement and introduction of free Google Maps Navigation.

The average price of location based applications on BlackBerry App World is about twice as high as on the Apple App Store ($14.37compared to $7.34).

Besides the Navigation and Travel categories, most location based applications are published in News & Weather and Social, such

as AccuWeather, foursquare and Loopt.

The average price of the 100 highest ranked applications in the Navigation, Travel andMaps & Navigation categories for each store are displayed above (United States). InSeptember, the average price was $16.13 in BlackBerry App World, decreasing to anaverage of $13.74 in November. On the Apple App Store, prices remained fairly stablewith an average of $4.36. Google Android Market however saw a signicant priceincrease at the end of November, from $3.20 to $5.10, which is due to CoPilot LiveNavigation applications for Europe (UK 50.43), AU+NZ (UK 44.99) and UK+IRE(UK 23.47) entering the top 100.

In order to get more detailed information about location based applications, Distimopartnered with Skyhook Wireless, combining data to get more in-depth insight inthese types of applications. As can be seen above, most location based applicationsare published in the Navigation & Travel categories, such as turn-by-turn applications(e.g. TomTom), marine navigation applications (e.g. Charts&Tides by Navimatics),and restaurant nders (e.g. iFinder Restaurant). A signicant amount of News andWeather applications use location as well, such as CNN Mobile and AccuWeather.The third category containing most location based applications is Social, withapplications such as foursquare, Friendmapper and Loopt.

As can be seen in the upper right graph, most location based applications arepublished in the Navigation & Travel, News & Weather and Social categories. We

analyzed the same dataset in terms of pricing, and as can be seen above the averageprice of location based applications on BlackBerry App World is about twice as high ason the Apple App Store. However, the graph in the upper left indicates that prices ofMaps & Navigation applications on BlackBerry App World are decreasing, while priceson the Apple App Store are fairly stable.

The proportion of free and paid ranked location based applications is displayed inthe graph above. More than half of the ranked location based applications on the

Apple App Store are paid (57%), while for Google Android Market only 21% ofthese applications are paid. On BlackBerry App World, the amount of paid and freeapplications is about the same.
