    PROJECT RED

Project RED (Revolutionizing Education)reveals that schools with 1-to-1computing programs, report students achievement scores on high-stakes testsare on the rise up to 70 %. However, thatnumber is increased to 85 % for schoolswith 1-to-1 computing programs thatuse proper implementation strategies ;including electronic formativeassessments on a regular basis andfrequent collaboration of teachers inprofessional learning communities. Thisstudy is believed to be the largestcomplete look at how technology isbeing used in schools, and what factorslead to the greatest success ineducation technology.

    The results indicated that:

schools properly implementing 1-to-1 programs achieve more educationalsuccess than schools with higher student-to-computer ratios.

Leadership and vision are two essential components in technologyimplementation, the study found, and while all schools can benefit fromtechnology, the study shows that when principals receive specializingtraining and technology [is] properly implemented, the benefits increaseeven more, according to Project RED.

Technology-infused intervention programs were the top predictor for improved high-stakes test scores, lower dropout rates, and improveddisc ipline.

Daily technology use was one of the top five indicators of better discipline, better attendance, and increased college a ttendance. http://www.eschoolnews.com/events/conferences/necciste/

    Implementing Technology News

Most children now have access tomobile devices , teachers are usingthis to their advantage byincorporating devices that studentsalready own into classroom lessonsand projects. From mobile phones,i-pods, tablets to laptopcomputers, teachers and studentsare increasingly bringingtechnology to the classroom.Numerous studies have highlighted

PROPERLY IMPLEMENTTING TECHNOLOGY LEADS TO SUCCESS.

the benefits of one-to-one computingprograms in nurturing creative thinking, positive classroom behaviour, andincreasing attendance and test scores.Unfortunately, for many school districts, there is a lack of funds, to providedevices for each student. The solutionmay be found in asking students tobring their own devices to class, cutting back on the number of mobiledevices the school needs to providewhile still enhancing the learningexperience.

    Key Implementation factors

    1. Technology is integrated into

    every intervention classperiod.

    2. Principals provide time for teacher professional learningand collaboration at leastmonthly.

    3. Students use technology dailyfor online collaboration(games/simulations and socialmedia).

    4. Technology is integrated intocore curriculum weekly or

more frequently. 5. Online formative assessments

are done at least weekly.6. Lower r student-computer

ratios improve outcomes.7. Virtual trips are very powerful.

The best schools do these atleast monthly.

    8. Students use search enginesdaily.

    9. Principals are trained inteacher buy-in, bestpractices, and technology-transformed learning .

    Professional Development

PROJECT RED confirmed eachof the following plays afundamental role in integratingtechnology.

Daily technology use in coresubject-area classesfrequent technology use inintervention courseand a low student-to-computer ratio.

Underutilization of technologymay be a reflection of too littleprofessional development, bothfor teachers and administrators.

    1. What are the goals for student technology proficiency ? 2. What would a well-educated student from your school know and be

able to do with technology by the end of 12 th grade ? 3. How do the various technology devices and tools used at your school

lead to the proficiencies described above ? 4. What professional development will teachers need to be successful in

helping students meet the proficiencies described above ? 5. What data should be collected to track the progress of your

    educational technology initiatives ?

    TRENDS

When studies are conducted and results are released, the reader must be aware of the validity of the study, that is, who is conducting the study and the purpose of the study. Intel is Project REDs lead sponsor, and theinitiative has received support from Apple, the Pearson Foundation, Qwest, and eChalk. The stated goal of Project RED is to prove that when properly implemented investing in technology can boost student achievement andwill result in monetary savings for schools and local governments. The reader i s left wondering if there a vested interestin the outcome of the project that may influence the findings, or is the study being conducted is such a manner, to provea predetermined desired outcome.
