GOD'S HEALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Mala-chi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God's healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That's a pretty comforting notion--especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It's the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and perse-vere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere--in faith, this time--and our lives will be secure in God re-gardless of how we are treated by our enemies.

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Luke 21: The Apocalypse–The End
As we approach the end of the liturgical year, the readings at Mass tend to focus more and more on the “end” of things: end of time, end of the world, etc. That part of the bible that deals with the “end-time” phenomenon is known as apocalyptic literature. The language found in this type of literature (e.g., the books of Daniel and Revelation) can be terrifying, and has led many people to misinterpret the scripture. Our Gospel reading this Sunday from Luke 21 also falls in this category. However, it does not so much deal with “the end”—at least not directly—as much as it deals with another question: the issue of one’s ultimate concern/trust. The word apocalypse itself just means “revelation,” or “unveiling.” In order to understand this literature, we just have to “unveil” its meaning. Some time ago I came across a very inspiring homily by Bishop Robert Barron. For this reflection, I would like to borrow some main ideas from him.
First of all, Jesus said of the Temple: “The days will come when there will not be a stone left upon another stone in the Temple.” Such a statement from Jesus was not meant to predict a terrible destruction of the Temple—although historically the Temple was indeed destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. The Temple represents all religious institutions throughout the ages: and as great as any of them can be, they will all eventually collapse. Therefore, we cannot place our ultimate trust in any one religious institution. How about political institutions? Jesus said: “There will be wars and insurrections… Nation will rise against nation, kingdom against kingdom…” If we look at the history of the world, indeed it is true that one empire/kingdom dissolved and another came into being. The ancient Greeks under Alexander the Great were great. But eventually they dissolved. The Roman Empire ruled the known world for centu-ries. But what remains of them now? They are just a distant history. The United States has been a dominant world pow-er for more than a century. But will it last forever? Therefore, one cannot put one’s ultimate trust in any political insti-tution either.
Jesus went on to say: “There will be powerful earthquakes and famines and plagues.” Again this is not to pre-dict terrible natural disasters—although these occurred again and again. But it is a warning for us not to find ultimate security in nature. Mother Nature can be great, but also cruel at times… Jesus also said: “You will be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends.” Here even one’s own family cannot be the source of one’s ultimate trust. Our families can be great, but they cannot claim ultimacy. So who or what can be the source of our ultimate security? Jesus said: “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” The Lord is inviting us to let go, one by one, of all those things that we think are ultimate, and to cling onto him alone. In God alone is to be found our ultimate security! And that is the meaning of today’s apocalyptic reading!

COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE
CHÚA NHẬT TUẦN 33 TN – C SỐNG TRONG SỰ THẬT Ga 17,11a-19
“Xin Cha lấy sự thật mà thánh hiến họ. Lời Cha là sự thật.” (Ga 17,16-17)

STUDENTS CELEBRATE ALL SAINTS DAY The 6th Grade students prepared the Student Body Mass for All Saints Day with teacher, Mrs. Walsh. The students dressed as and made devotional candles of their favorite saint for the Mass procession. Celebrating the feast day of these holy people gives our students the opportunity to learn about theses models of faith, obedience, and love of God. Students are to live the example of the saints every day by respecting others as children of God, serving the needy, living their faith, and growing in their relationship with God.
