Diploma in Community Physiotherapy: Because of the interest shown by other community medical professionals, and the benefits that will accrue, it is planned that this course will develop as a CNAA
validated diploma/MSc in community health studies. The basic curriculum and content will remain the same, but be enriched by a multidisciplinary forum of physiotherapists and other professionals allied to medicine working in the community. This development has occurred since placing the announcement in Physiotherapy. As a result it has been decided not to start a course this autumn but to await the new course which is planned for autumn 1991.

The essential function of undertaking and supervising research will be made easier by London UniVerSity Physiotherapy Degree close links with both clinical and academic
THE first physiotherapy degree course offered by the University of London started this academic year. The central course developmental concern was the preparation of students for current-day practice. Thirty- six students embarked on the four-year BSc honours degree in physiotherapy at King’s College London. The physiotherapy students and staff are part of the new academic physiotherapy group which, with anatomy and human biology, physiology and phar- macology, form the Biomedical Sciences Division at King‘s College London.
Prospective students are, in general, required to have the equivalent of three A-level passes, including two science subjects. Mature students are considered on individual merit.
The physiotherapy group is located in Normanbv College on the Denmark Hill
physiology on other campuses of King’s College.
In the first year, course units in physiology, human anatomy and communication in health care are studied together with under- graduates in the life sciences and nursing. Health and normal bodily function is the first- year theme. Physiotherapy studies are taught on the Denmark Hill campus from the first week of the course.
In the second year, physiotherapy, biomedical, social and psychological studies are organised around a developmental theme, and in year three the emphasis is on clinical specialties. Research methodology is taught in the third year and in the final year, the students carry out a research project, under supervision, in a subject of their choice. In each year of the course a clinical education programme is organised
departments within the university and King’s College Hospital.
As employees of the University of London a number of courses are available to facilitate staff development. Those offered by the Centre for Higher Education Studies include workshops in lecturing, teaching study skills, research supervision and student assess- ment.
