How We Are Different

Part of the Community. Since 1928 the center has been a trusted resource, providing communication and learning services to the community. We help hundreds of children and adults each year—extending our reach far beyond the university classroom.

Integrated Approach to Clinical Care. Our clinical care is built on a foundation of research and innovation. University researchers and clinical faculty bridge their knowledge, making the center an invaluable resource for communicative health. Some clients engage in research as part of a treatment plan, and many research studies invite community participation.

Expert Care. Our expert clinical faculty direct all levels of client care. All faculty clinicians are licensed and certified.

Teaching Center. Northwestern’s professional graduate programs in communication sciences and disorders are among the best in the country, and the center provides clinical training for these future audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and learning disability specialists. Clinical faculty direct the residency-and-rotation teaching model founded on best practices and a comprehensive care approach that coordinates with medical teams, educators, and families.

Audio Environment Simulation Room. The center’s state-of-the-art Audio Environment Simulation Room allows clients to test hearing devices against different background noises and environments so that fittings can be fine-tuned and personalized. Other clients may also benefit from practicing communication strategies in a range of real-world settings.

Healthcare Partner. The center is part of a broad network that ensures comprehensive and appropriate care. Our partners include• Northwestern Memorial Hospital• Northwestern Voice, Speech, Language Service and Swallowing Center, Chicago• Northwestern Audiology Services, Chicago• Prentice Women’s Hospital of Northwestern Memorial Hospital• Educators and medical and social service professionals

Speech-Language Services

The center offers a range of services to help children and adults who are experiencing speech-language communication challenges.

Learning Services

Assessment and remediation services are available for children and adults with learning disabilities in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, math, and nonverbal learning.

Diagnostic evaluations assess how cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses are evident in daily functioning at school or in the work-place. The purpose of assessment is to determine why someone is hav-ing difficulty (e.g., having trouble reading, writing for self-expression, solving math problems, etc.) and to identify strategies and accommoda-tions to address areas of concern.

Remediation services aim to improve functioning in areas of underachievement identified by a diagnostic evaluation. Although

schoolwork can be integrated into the remediation curriculum, remediation focuses on improving the listening, speaking, reading, writing, and math skills that contribute to success in academic environments or the workplace.

Multidisciplinary evaluations are available for learning disabilities and speech-language disorders.
