Food for Thought

Fr. James Bearss, Pastor

In the coming weeks, members of

the Northern Lights Catholic

Community should be receiving

their parish tax statements in the

mail. I am grateful for your commitment, trust

and sharing most generously of your treasure in

fulfilling parish ministry.

I am attempting to direct our parishes to a vision

of a stewardship basis of operations. I am

encouraging all parish members to prayerfully

consider and discern what they both, as an

individual and as a family, can share of their

time, talent and treasure. While stewardship is

not a new concept, it is in many Catholic

households. It is my hope that in five years, most

of our parishioners in the Northern Lights

Catholic Community will be willing to offer 5%

of their ordinary income to Church ministry. This

grand parish endeavor means our parishes will no

longer be conducting a Catholic Services Appeal,

seminarian, or retirement religious fund appeals.

Our largest parish Apostolic ministry, our

Catholic school, will be tuition-free. Other

incidentals where devastation and natural

disasters have struck will be budgeted for and

distributed accordingly. The monthly collection

for the Otsego Food Pantry and the Matagalpa

collection will continue as they have in the past.

As part of the parish initiative towards

stewardship, beginning in January, I’ve availed

myself a half hour to meet with each of our

Catholic school parishioners to not only learn

of their needs, but to introduce them to the

concept of stewardship. With the assistance of

the Stewardship Council that is forming, I hope

each year to encourage our Catholic school

parents to trust God a bit more as they make a

greater sacrificial offering. Their parish family

has made an act of trust and willingness to

support them financially and spiritually; will they

reciprocate back as generously? It is a solidary

relationship that has been fostered for over a

hundred years in Gaylord.

The three key words in stewardship are trust,

faith and love. There must be a significant

relationship of trust developed between the parish

and our parishioners. These past five years, the

Cathedral parish has published quarterly budget

statements to develop a relationship of

transparency and trust. It is my hope that our

parish would slowly reciprocate back with an act

of faith. Lastly, that throughout this process of

going in the direction of stewardship, a great

sense of love and a willingness of generosity

might be formed in our hearts. God has been

generous in many ways in our lives. How are we

reciprocating that back in kind? I would point

you to our parish website to learn more about

stewardship and how you might become more

seriously involved in your baptismal mission.

I joyfully announce that last week the Cathedral

parish received a large bequest in the amount of

$318,750. There is still a second but significantly

small distribution to arrive in the coming months.

Both bequests will be applied to the parish debt

and will bring our debt under three hundred

thousand dollars. I remind our Cathedral parish

that we still have the roof expense and the heating

system of the school to consider as future debt,

not currently applied to what has already been

published of our bulletin. I am grateful for this

parishioner who remembered their parish family

in their will, and encourage others to consider

putting their parishes in their wills and trusts. As

the Pastor of the Cathedral, I do not foresee

myself conducting a third capital campaign for

debt relief at the Cathedral. However, I will be

encouraging one and all to give to debt relief and

consider special projects at no cost to the parish.

The news announced above should bring a smile

to our faces and prick our consciences on what

more we might do in the form of stewardship. Pax Vobiscum

The Inner Life for Acts of Charity

Matthew 25 is sometimes cited as the “bottom

line” for gaining our salvation. In this gospel Jesus

admonishes us to acts of charity for those in great

need. But I think there can be a false understanding

of the command to carry out these acts if we think

the acts themselves are key. When asked what is the

greatest commandment, Jesus makes primary the

need to fully love God (MT 22). He calls it the

greatest and first commandment. He holds up the

need to love our neighbor as ourselves as a “second”

commandment which is “like” the first. Charity

HAS to flow from love of God; otherwise charity

becomes a human work rather than a divine one.

Who among us is not moved when we see others

acting out of a kindness and regard for others? Jesus

even affirmed goodness for goodness sake in

affirming the marginalized of society as being

worthy of heaven before the prideful religious of the

day. We as the Church are the mystical body of

Christ. We are able to love God because God first

loved us. He has infused the Holy Spirit in us

through baptism. And in baptism the Spirit seeds our

inner life. God is always active and the indwelling

of the Holy Spirit is not an abstraction, but rather

living in us for all the outward acts we do.

We are never a finished product of the Lord’s.

We constantly have to be polished and reformed by

way of the Spirit. When we go to Confession we

prime ourselves for letting God reshape us from

within for His love to find outward expression. All

of our inner faculties and outward acts must find

their roots in the inner principle of the Holy Spirit.

If we don’t nurture our inner life through prayer,

sacraments and humble reverence which turns to

God in all things, then our lives become complicated

and confused. A surrendered person is a simple

person because they have ordered their lives to this

one inner principle (God) from which they draw all

their motivation for action.

Let us point our own will to the will of God. Let

us become mystics in harboring God inside of us so

He may be revealed in our acts to those who do not

know Him.

The Longings of the Heart

Hunger. We all can relate to what hunger may feel like. When our stomach starts to growl and we may feel a little ache since it has been hours since noon. Food and water may fulfill those achy feelings in our stomach, but what about the ache and longing we have in our hearts? I was recently blessed to attend a second course at the Theology of the Body Institute in Pennsylvania earlier this month. Adults from all over the U.S., including Hong Kong and the Philippines received 30 hours of instruction in front of the Blessed Sacrament with Christopher West as our instructor. We received so many graces during this incredible week. One thing that West kept reminding us during our

class was that we need to remain open to receive the reality of Christ’s Love in our hearts. What is that ache that we all experience in our hearts, where things of this world cannot fully satisfy? In reference to St. John Paul II’s, “Theology of the

Body”, Christopher West explains that our bodies are “a sign of God’s mystery in the world” that our bodies are to “make visible what is invisible.” All of creation is filled with signs that show God’s great love for us. We know that God is certainly present within all of us and one of the many ways He shows us His love is through our body, the temple of the Holy Spirit. What God has made with each of us is absolutely unique and quite remarkable. Each person is unrepeatable. He has made male and female so biologically different that two actually become one and that love between a man and a woman can bring forth a whole new creation, a whole new person. What a gift! Becoming closer to God through prayer and the

sacraments are going to help us begin to fill those aches in our hearts. The love between a husband and a wife reflects the love between Christ and His Church. By properly carrying out our desires, by practicing chastity and not using others, we will begin to also see what kind of love Our Lord wants to give us. If one is in a sinful state, that person cannot totally be receptive to the authentic love Christ wants to give. By helping our youth understand that our desires are gifts from God and through practicing chastity will bring them to authentic freedom. Only through prayer and a closer relationship with Christ will we ever come close to have our hearts filled. Ultimately in Heaven is where

we will truly be fulfilled.

NEW LIFE PREGNANCY

RESOURCE CENTER

Our Lord has richly blessed this ministry with several new families who have joined our ministry family. We thank your church which has played a big part in helping young families in need. We continually give out baby layettes to our local hospital, and, as a result, our layette supplies are running very low. We specifically are in need of:

• Baby wash and baby clothes

• Hooded towel sets

• Newborn pajamas, girls and boys, sizes newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months

• Warm receiving blankets

• Socks - newborn

• Onesies - sizes newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months

• Outfits for boys/girls - sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months

• Diapers - Newborn

Would your church/church group prayerfully consider holding a baby shower in honor of New Life, or if you are so led, donate individually from the items listed above? Thank you so much for supporting this ministry!

REFUGE UPDATE

Our next week of service is January 31st- Feb 6th. Our biggest need for help is the 12:00-7:00am Sunrise shift. It’s a

great time to catch up on your reading or put together a puzzle with a friend! Thank you for all the generous donations these past few weeks. The items we could still use are bus tokens, bottle water, decaf coffee, and sugar and creamer. Things are getting smoother all the time and a couple more specific coordinators would be terrific, one to organize laundry volunteers and one to organize transportation for the transfers. Either one would take no more than an hour a week and we can provide you with the “how to and who to call lists.” Included are the dates below for the rest of the year at St. Mary and if you would like to see the schedule for all of the churches please go to the St. Mary website under the Stewardship tab and then Social Justice and Outreach.

St. John Paul II Evangelization Center

Thank you for saying Yes!

The youth of our Parish have received such wonderful gifts over this academic year. This past summer the Disciples of St. Mary built us an incredible shelving unit for our St. John Paul II Evangelization Center. With all of the projects that our Parish and School participate in, we were desperately in need of a space to hold all of our supplies for Vacation Bible School and other Youth Ministry efforts. We now have a place right in our own space! THANK YOU! The Disciples of St. Mary also just built us a beautiful stand for our cappuccino machine that was donated by Pat Schultz. It’s the real deal and the young people are so excited about it. We are just about ready for serving some cappuccino!

Most recently we received a donation from Jim and Pauline Myler. The Mylers donated a flat screen TV and stand for our youth in the Evangelization Center. Are you looking for a place to hang out? Check out the St. John Paul II Evangelization Center, located in St. Mary Cathedral School across from the Old Cathedral. It is open from 3-4 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays for high school and middle school students to study or hang out after school.

For those of you who may not know, we also have an anonymous donor who donates each month for our high school and middle school youth to receive pizza and pop after school. “Pizza Wednesday” has become very popular and it brings our youth into the St. John Paul II Evangelization Center and forms fellowship.

We’re very grateful for the anonymous donor that I still do not know to this day who donated $200 cash back in September for our new DVD player and stereo. We have such incredible people here at St. Mary Cathedral. God bless all of you! Thank you for your generosity and stewardship! You are making a difference with the culture of our youth and we are seeing the buds developing because of your openness and willingness to say YES!

Thank you, Marie Hahnenberg
