EDITORIAL

Compare & Contrast

Moseley play their final league fixture before Christmas on Saturday. Doesn’t time fly when you’re enjoying yourselves………….and what a good link to plug the ‘perfect gift’ that you can find in the club shop!

We’ll be highlighting festive opening times soon and of course you can always buy over the phone or ‘browse by arrangement’ – just get in touch by phone or email….and have a look round the shop page on the club website.

Back to Saturday………..our near neighbours Nottingham make the comparatively short trip down the M42.

The Championship programme is a bit of a ‘stop start’ affair in the first part of the season and interlaced with British& Irish (B&I) Cup activity. Coaches, players and supporters are often frustrated at the ‘Cup interruptions’ but undoubtedly the change of in focus this brings has worked for us this year.

In the first ‘stretch’ of league matches we only earned 3 points before our B&I trip to Munster, but on return to league action we have already banked 8 points and have an opportunity for more this weekend before we depart for B&I activity at Worcester the following weekend.

There’s a lot more to the story than just league points earned and this includes the quality of the opposition in the two periods, the performances, the rub of the green etc etc. But whichever way you cut it, the ‘November-league’ has been a good one for Mose……and we’re not finished yet!

After this Saturday the next home game sees the visit of the ‘Irish Giants’ of Munster on Saturday 13th December. We are making great efforts to turn this into a memorable day and are actively promoting the game within the large Irish community in Birmingham. Make a note in your diary and let’s see if we can get our biggest crowd of the season as it’s also our ‘festive fixture’…..and our only home game in December!

The 1st XV’s welcome successful recent run of form has been eclipsed by the form of our other senior men’s side – Moseley Oak. They’ve only slipped once so far in Midlands 2 when they lost at league leaders Bridgnorth and are in 2nd place.

The next couple of weeks sees them visit 4th placed Wolverhampton this weekend before hosting 3rd placed Old Salts the following Saturday.

Why not come and lend them your support on the Saturday before Christmas?

On Saturday 20th December they entertain Stourbridge Lions at Billesley and would welcome your support………….free entry, full bar and catering facilities and a perfect ‘send off’ for Christmas!

Good luck to all our teams this weekend!

CAR PARKING ARRANGEMENTS DURING THE BUILDING OF THE NEW STAND

VERY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ!

NO CAR ACCESS BEYOND THE MAIN CAR PARK

Everyone who has visited Billesley recently will have noticed the new stand!

Work is now pretty intense across an area wider than just the stand itself including trenching & excavation etc. in the driveways and parking areas.

The driveway and area in front of the clubhouse is restricted by this excavation work and the recent bad weather has exacerbated the difficulties. We therefore have implemented a strict parking and access policy to prevent an accident.

1st XV Match Days

Parking by the clubhouse is SUSPENDED except for genuine ‘blue badge’ holders There is NO ACCESS BY CAR (except ‘blue badge’ holders) beyond the main car park by

the Yardley Wood entrance.

1. Billesley Pub Roundabout – Please use Swanshurst School car park

2. Yardley Wood Road – Please use the outer car park

1) Swanshurst School (entrance to ground from this car park now open again) Members please use this facility if you can

Swanshurst School Car Park (entrance directly off the ‘Billesley Pub’ roundabout) has recently been re-surfaced and is the best option for close parking. Entry is via the ‘side gate’ and probably the most convenient place to park for easy entry, exit and access to the ground!

2) During the next few months please use the ‘outer’ car park as directed by match day stewards. There are limited spaces in the ‘inner’ car park and it will fill quickly on 1st XV match days.

The ‘inner’ car park has restricted spaces due to materials storage etc. Please take extra care of these hazards!

If you have a valid ‘Blue Badge’ you will be directed as usual by the stewards to park by the clubhouse. Please arrive early as spaces are severely restricted – and please take extra care due to building hazards.

ALL other times …..training, events etc.

· Parking by the clubhouse is SUSPENDED

· There is NO ACCESS BY CAR beyond the main car park by the Yardley Wood entrance.

Please park in the main (inner) car park and use the access route in front of the hospitality boxes which is now fully open. The driveway gates will remain closed.

Please be vigilant at all times and be aware of temporary hazards due to construction related activities.

If you have mobility issues and are attending the clubhouse at any time other than 1st XV match days, please contact the club on 0121 443 3631 to allow arrangements to be made whilst work is under way.

BIG MATCH PREVIEW – by Glyn Barlow

Moseley v Nottingham

Saturday 22nd November 2014 3.00pm @ Billesley Common After the trials and tribulations of early season Moseley have the opportunity of securing a hat trick of wins this Saturday with the visit of Nottingham. The win over a Doncaster team that had already proved that they were going to be nobody’s promoted relegation fodder, with three wins from their six games prior to Saturday, was a strong indication of what Moseley are capable of. Most significantly it was Moseley’s all round game management that helped secure the win with the pack in a dominant mood and some excellent tactical and place kicking from Sam Olver who’s nearly faultless display with the boot gave him 23 of Moseley’s 28 points. As good a kicker as Sam is he doesn’t score points unless the opportunity to do so is created and it was a true team effort that put Doncaster under considerable pressure, forcing them to concede penalties. This week the team face no lesser a challenge as a resurgent Nottingham team visit for the second time in five weeks. Following last season, when Nottingham found themselves too close to the relegation dogfight for comfort the team has made an excellent start currently sitting in fifth place. Wins against Bedford (19-10), Plymouth (17-24), Yorkshire Carnegie (26-20) and Cornish Pirates (13-28) have been helped along by the try scoring abilities of back row Brett Wilson with four to his name and the boot of fly half Will Maisey. Nottingham’s three losses to date have shown a degree of inconsistency not reflective of their winning performances. A first loss of the season at home to Jersey must have been somewhat frustrating following such a positive start. A heavy 55-16 away defeat to Worcester has been somewhat tempered by a very credible 13-27 loss to title contenders Bristol. When the two teams met in the British & Irish Cup in October Moseley won 22 – 14 courtesy of tries from Nile Dacres, Joe Carpenter and Sam Brown. The game was significant for Moseley in that it was their first competitive win of the season with a squad that was probably one of the youngest Moseley have fielded at Billesley Common. An impressive first half from Moseley saw them take a 17-0 lead into half time. Nottingham came out after the break on the attack with two tries within three minutes before the substitution of a few wise Moseley heads helped to close the game down. Last season the two teams met in Championship rugby with the home team triumphant on both occasions. The win at Meadow Lane guaranteed Nottingham’s Championship status for another season. Sat 9th November 2013 Moseley 29 – 15 Nottingham Fri 18th April 2014 Nottingham 29 – 24 Moseley

This weekend Moseley need to build on the momentum given them by the two wins against London Scottish and Doncaster and start to turn Billesley Common into a place other teams will not want to visit. A high intensity performance from the pack is essential to give Sam Olver another chance to show how astute his tactical game can be, while hopefully giving some of the pace players attacking opportunities. Games against Nottingham are always entertaining and this one should be no different.

KNOW YOUR MOSELEY HISTORY - By Ewart Patrick

Moseley’s Early Presidents

When a group of 19-year old cricketers, from the Havelock Cricket Club, formed the Havelock Football Club, in 1873, they chose as their president Amos Roe. Roe, who held office for 14 seasons, was a successful businessman and philanthropist in his forties when the football club was founded and was probably invited to accept the presidency, because he was a well-known local figure. Amos Roe was succeeded as Moseley president, in 1887, by Lister Lea, the exact identification of whom is unclear because there were two men with that name, the co-founder of the firm of James & Lister Lea and his son and namesake. Lister Lea senior’s obituary in the Birmingham Daily Post stated that he ‘was of a very retiring disposition, and took no part in public life’ which makes it seem more than likely that it was his son who served as Moseley president. Lister Lea junior was a keen supporter of the North Warwickshire Hunt, a frequent worshipper at Birmingham Cathedral and a vice-president of the Moseley, King’s Heath and Balsall Heath Horticultural Society as well as being a supporter of many charitable works. The Lea family home was at Greenhill House, Moseley and their architectural practice designed many well-known Birmingham public houses such as The White Swan and the Anchor Inn, both in Bradford Street, and the Barton Arms in Aston. In 1891/92 Lister Lea was succeeded as president of Moseley Football Club by G.F. Lyndon, a prominent Moseley citizen, who ran the family edge tool business in Fazeley Street, Birmingham and served as a local magistrate. He later also represented Moseley and King’s Heath on Worcestershire County Council and served on a number of the council’s committees. Lyndon had other sporting interests apart from rugby and at various times served as president of Moseley Park Lawn Tennis Club and as a vice-president of both Moseley Cricket Club and of Coldbath Quoit Club. He also served a term as president of the Birmingham Photographic Society and was a dedicated amateur meteorologist. Moseley Football Club’s second captain, Denston Gibson, who had led the side in 1877/78, took over the club presidency, from G.F. Lyndon, in 1893/94 and like his captaincy his presidency was only of one season’s duration. Gibson was succeeded as president by the club’s first captain, S.H. Deakin, who had led the side in 1873/74-1876/77, and also served as president for three seasons. Having bestowed the Moseley presidency on the club’s first two captains, in 1897/98, the earlier practice of choosing prominent local citizens as the club’s figurehead was resumed with the election of N.C. Reading, of ‘Inglewood’ in Wake Green Road. Like his immediate predecessor Reading was involved in the jewellery trade being a partner in the frim of N.C. Reading & Co. which made watch chains, necklaces and pendants. He also served as both honorary treasurer and as a vice-president of the Birmingham Jewellers’ and Silversmiths’ Association. Apart from his business career Reading’s main interest was politics. He was the first honorary secretary of the Moseley Liberal Unionist Association and acted as secretary to Austen Chamberlain, the local Member of Parliament, who was also a member of Moseley Football Club. He was an original member of King’s Norton local council and was its vice-chairman in 1896-99 before in the latter year being elected to Birmingham council as one of the representatives for Balsall Heath. In 1914, after serving on the Parks Committee and its predecessor he was elected a city alderman. N.C. Reading was also a founder member of both Moseley Baptist Church and of the Moseley and Balsall Heath Institute and was honorary secretary of Moseley Quoit and Bowling Club. Despite all these activities and interests he also found time to serve as a local magistrate.

STAND DEVELOPMENT DIARY

The Inside Story

The undercroft

Changing Room

Looking out to pitch from 1st Floor

1st Floor With thanks to Terry Davies for photographs

Moseley’s new president, in succession to N.C. Reading, in 1900/01, was W. Thomas, who only served for one season. Little is known about Thomas but he was probably the W. Thomas who was active in Conservative politics in East Worcestershire but this is not certain. Following the brief tenure of W. Thomas Moseley elected a new president in 1901/02, T.H. Daniel, who was a partner in the firm of Daniel and Arter, silversmiths and electroplaters, of Highgate Street. T.H. Daniel also served for a number of years as president of Moseley Cricket Club. Having previously chosen the club’s first two captains as president Moseley, in 1905/06, bestowed the honour on another former player, G.F. Jackson. A forward, Jackson, had played for the first team during the 1880s and had also appeared for the Midland Counties before becoming involved in the administration of the club. After nine season’s service as honorary secretary the renowned J.F. Byrne retired from the post and succeeded G.F. Jackson as Moseley president in 1910/11, a position he held until the end of the 1928/29 season. Since Byrne’s election every club president, with one possible exception, has been a former Moseley player.

Moseley served up a tactical masterclass to take the spoils at Doncaster – and in fly-half Sam Olver they had the perfect man to guide them to back-to-back wins. Schooled on the sports fields of Oundle, the 20-year-old has been learning his craft under the tutorage of England’s Stephen Myler at Northampton Saints. And on this display he certainly seems to have done his homework – his 23 points eclipsing the efforts of Doncaster’s Dougie Flockhart, who went into this contest as the leading points scorer in the Championship. “I’ve been learning a lot off Steve Myler at Northampton but we also have Will Hooley at Saints who was at Moseley last year,” Olver said. “There’s great competition for the shirt and I’m learning so much. “It’s the same at Moseley where we have the likes of Caolan Ryan and Ollie Thomas. They are really good 10s and that’s good for me because it pushes me to play even better.” An early Bruno Bravo try, converted by Flockhart, handed the home side a fourth-minute advantage but, galvanised by the score, the Red and Blacks dug in to deny the Knights any further chances. Instead it came down to the kicking ability of Flockhart and Olver, with the latter taking the first-half honours as his four penalties edged Moseley to within a point at 13-12. But while there was little to choose between the sides before the break, the second period belonged to the visitors. Back-row Chris Brightwell, who went close following a marauding run just before half-time, was driven over for a try on 50 minutes, which Olver converted, and the youngster then slotted over another three penalties as his rampant pack forced Doncaster into a string of offences. As for the Knights, they struggled to gain territory such was the accuracy of the youngster’s kicking from hand as he profited from his pack’s superiority. “That’s my best performance for Moseley,” Olver said. “But all credit to the rest of the team for putting me in that position. It was an excellent display from the forwards and that allowed me to kick a few points. “We did well to come back after they scored and we kept them out. We could have had a few more but I’m not going to complain about the result. “The boys are in high spirits with two wins in a row. It’s good to get some momentum to take into the game against Nottingham next week.”

WHAT THE PAPERS SAID

Unhappy Griffiths warns Knights of relegation dogfight

Yorkshire Post Doncaster Knights’ director of rugby Clive Griffiths saw his side slump to a 15-point defeat at the hands of lowly Moseley and admitted it was one of his lowest moments at the club. His side failed to take advantage of a fourth-minute try from Bruno Bravo and were undone by their determined visitors and an impressive kicking display from England Under-20 fly-half Sam Olver. “We tried to play in the wrong areas at times and I have to say it’s one of my lowest days at Castle Park,” said Griffiths. “I’ve had better days as a rugby coach and there were no comparisons to the desire and durability we showed on that Friday night against Bristol. “I have no arguments with the result, we were beaten by a better team. They don’t play much rugby but have kicked us to death today and the young lad Olver has kicked his goals and orchestrated the game well.” Dougie Flockhart converted Bravo’s try to hand the Knights a seven-point lead but the remainder of the half showcased the kicking ability of both sides with Olver’s four penalties eclipsing Flockhart’s brace as the visitors closed to 13-12 at the break. There had been chances for both sides to cross the whitewash, Moseley prop Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi knocked on just as he was about to crash over and the Doncaster forwards twice managed to fluff their lines after winning five-metre line-outs. In the end, the only other score came at the start of the second period, back-row Chris Brightwell being driven over by the Moseley pack and Olver’s extras guided the visitors into a lead they were never to relinquish. Further pressure from the battling Birmingham side prompted a series of penalties which Olver duly converted to take his personal tally to 23 points. Paul Roberts tried in vain to take his side upfield with a number of thumping kicks only for the visitors to send the ball back through the fog that just added to the gloom surrounding Castle Park.

Page 22: North Midlands Cup 11.00am @ Billesley Common … Matters eEdition 4… · Unhappy Griffiths warns Knights of relegation dogfight ... times soon and of course you can always buy over

Griffiths – whose side have now not won in the league in three games – added: “I have to go away and assess the performance of the team – which wasn’t good. “I take full responsibility for the performance – the selection and substitutions. But that’s not good enough and if we have any aspirations to stay in the Championship we have to get our act in order quickly because we are in a dogfight now.” The result leaves Doncaster fifth from bottom on 14 points, two clear of Yorkshire Carnegie, three ahead of Moseley and five in front of Cornish Pirates with Plymouth at the bottom on two points.

Doncaster Knights beaten 28-13 at home by lowly Moseley

Derbyshire Times Doncaster Knights failed to lift the gloom hanging over Castle Park as they slumped to a 28-13 Championship defeat at home to lowly Moseley. The foggy conditions made it difficult for spectators to follow all the action clearly at times but they didn’t miss much as far as Knights were concerned. Few individuals lived up to their reputation as Knights lost at home for the third time this season, and there will have to be significant improvement if they hope to beat visiting London Scottish this weekend. Knights gave a starting Championship debut to Leicester centre Rhys Williams, but he got little chance to impress in a back division starved of good ball for long periods. Knights couldn’t have made a better start in front of another four-figure crowd, but they were to flatter to deceive. They tore into the Birmingham side, who only recorded their first league win of the season the previous week, from the whistle and scrum-half Bruno Bravo touched down from close range for a try converted by Dougie Flockhart after just four minutes. Knights continued to dominate territorially but had to settle for a brace of long-range penalties, cancelled out by Moseley fly-half Sam Olver Knights piled on the pressure at the end of the first quarter but Moseley, clearly buoyed by their win over Scottish, dug deep to defend their line. Doncaster full-back Paul Jarvis, the one man who looked dangerous with ball in hand, got back to nail a Moseley player who had intercepted a pass around the halfway line. Jarvis spoilt a nice break with a wayward pass which led to his side finding themselves under pressure in the dying moments of the half. Both sides missed angled penalties in the opening minutes of the second half during which Moseley took a stranglehold on the game. No sooner had play resumed following a change of referee, than Moseley claimed a 19-13 lead with a converted try from a catch-and-drive. The prospects of Knights suffering a third successive league defeat increased when Olver converted a long-range penalty to leave them trailing 22-13. Olver hammered another nail into Knights’ coffin with another long-range penalty on 69 minutes and left them needing to score at least twice in the dying minutes - something they never looked like doing as they ended the game pointless – with a seventh penalty four minutes from the end of normal time.

MOSELEY PLAYERS ASSOCIATION

Past and Present Players of Moseley Rugby Club

“Keeping the spirit alive”

Membership of Moseley Players Association (MPA) is open to anyone who has played for ANY Moseley team, including MWRFC and Moseley Oak. This includes anyone who has had

a significant involvement with managing, coaching or providing on-field care to the players and was therefore an essential part of the playing team. The MPA plays a key role in keeping former players in touch with each other and involved in the Club and assisting the Club in any

ways it can. Please contact the Membership Secretary Roy Kerr (contact details are at the end of this section) for details and a membership application form.

We are always pleased to receive any snippets of information about any old players from any

of your eras. Please email Moseley Matters at [email protected]. Another memorabilia request from Jan Webster Jan Webster has, once again, taken on the task of exhibiting the Club’s memorabilia in the new clubhouse and he has a lot of wall space to fill! What’s more, he doesn’t want to leave the present clubhouse, which will continue to be fully used, with bare walls! So, Jan urgently needs your help. If you have anything hidden away or taking up wall or cupboard space which you (or, more likely, your ‘other half’!) need for other things and would like to help Jan create a display worthy of the building itself, please start searching those cupboards and drawers, attics, cellars and garages now! Whatever you can spare and even if you think it may not be good enough to display, do let Jan take a look so that he can decide if it can be displayed or not. He is interested in photographs of any sort – team or group pictures, action shots, unknown photos of The Reddings etc. – from any era; also rugby balls of any significance, trophies, ties from other clubs or rugby organisations, signed rugby shirts, old match programmes and so on, in fact, anything that can either be framed or displayed in an appropriate cabinet. Obviously, the hunt is on primarily for items associated with Moseley, but others may also be of interest, particularly if they relate to county, divisional, representative or international sides in which Moseley players have appeared or which will be of general interest. Items from Moseley Ladies, Moseley Youth, Moseley Oak and the Mini & Junior Section are equally important. If you wish to donate something which is rather special to you and would like it to be known where it came from, your donation can be acknowledged as part of the display. It is well known that the displays of photographs and memorabilia in the present clubhouse are the envy of visiting supporters from all over the country. Please help Jan to create an even better display within our striking new clubhouse, one of which the whole club and all its various sections can be proud.

Match Report

Moseley Oak 31 - 12 Ludlow Moseley Oak gained a bonus point win against a determined Ludlow side at Billesley Common. Short of 5 of the regular forwards and 2 of the backs it was always going to be a challenge and so it proved. Moseley began well and after 5 minutes a strong carry from Dan Barratt created quick ball and Jack Richards outpaced the cover defence to score wide out on the left. Soon after a clever break by Jon Perks was continued by Tom Peake. From the breakdown, Louis Stelling made an accurate cross kick and Ben Gerry scored a try converted by Perks. Two further tries came before half time, a great line from Jon Perks put Dan Barratt in under the posts and then Perks scored his own. Between those scores Ludlow scored their own after poor Moseley tackling. Plenty of possession for Ludlow in the second half and an excellent individual run by their Outside Half resulted. Moseley rallied towards the end and an attacking lineout saw Dan Barratt run in for his second.

Moseley 7 – 32 West Bridgford

Our first cup match of the season started off against West Bridgford ladies from the league

above, with a slightly nervous air in the changing rooms beforehand we put on our game

faces for the kick off and it was a tough start.

West Bridgford kicked off and got possession back almost immediately with a few messy

attempts at getting the ball out to their backs they made a break not long after and made it

over the try line, luckily the try was held up by full back Clare Bowyer, which then went back to

a 5m scrum.

The first try of the game shortly after when another smooth ball by West Bridgford out through

the backline meant they put 5 points on the scoreboard but missed their conversion. Moseley

kept their heads up but the first quarter was dominated by West Bridgford who then scored

another try not long after by one of their centres who worked her way around a few players to

run 20m freely and score their second try of the game, again this went unconverted.

Flanker Harriet put in many amazing tackles as usual but unfortunately had to leave the field

of play due to an injury meaning full back Clare going in to the Number 7 position and

substitute Sam Jackson going in at full back.

Moseley were now determined to get their hands on the ball but frustratingly let another 2

tries pass (unconverted) before half time. The first half ended very well defensively for us with

Page 32: North Midlands Cup 11.00am @ Billesley Common … Matters eEdition 4… · Unhappy Griffiths warns Knights of relegation dogfight ... times soon and of course you can always buy over

great tackles made by Second Row Boe Meaton and Flanker Joy Potter at the breakdowns

and the forwards managed to keep West Bridgford at bay.

After a good talking to from coach Hannah Bussey and captain Nicola Brown the ladies got

right back into the game without losing any fighting spirit, this time we kicked off and after a

first half littered with penalties on their part the referee was now less lenient, and kick off

began with a scrum due to a knock-on from their receiver, after a strong scrum from both

sides Moseley hooker Nicola Brown managed to get the ball back quickly for Scrum Half

Emily Dove to get out towards the backs who were brought down and turned over instantly.

West Bridgford once again had possession but Moseley were adamant they wouldn't be

getting through this time and didn't concede or score any points for 20 minutes until Moseley

gained a scrum in their 22, another quick ball through the scrum meant Emily Dove could get

it back out to the backs and once received by Fly Half Megan Grant-Harris who also drew in a

few players made a quick pop pass to Clare Bowyer (in the centres now) who handed off and

dodged 4 West Bridgford girls to put some points on the board for Moseley, Megan Grant-

Harris then took this conversion successfully making the score 7-20 at this point of the game.

Heads were now lifted after this but unfortunately not long after Moseley ladies lost 2 crucial

players, Emily Dove and Outside centre Ashleigh Aiston who had had a fantastic game, with

our only substitute already on the pitch we had no choice but to play with 12 players, luckily

West Bridgford played in the spirit of the game and also went down to 12 players, so we

thought.

After a quick scrum the away side got their hands through the backs where their centre made

a break but was brought down in our 22, after a quick pop to their forwards for a crash ball

next to the break down (a very popular option for this side) a try was scored.

Noticing West Bridgford were playing with 13 the referee ordered 1 player to leave at the kick

off and the game resumed with another ball being crashed over their try line and near the

posts to provide the final try of the game, which also went converted making the final result 7-

32.

Match Reports

Under 10s Match Report

After recent results, the Under 10's could have been forgiven for being down-hearted at the prospect of facing 8 games at the Kidderminster festival on Sunday. The morning was given over to a round robin of teams chosen at random and the afternoon would see teams who finished in the same place in each of the groups face off against each other. The first game on a gloomy morning was against Dudley Kingstanding and Alex, Eleanor, Tom (c), Joe, Kiran, Sé, Arthur and Alfie proved more than up to the job. Early penalties against the opponents saw Moseley take heart and superb support play by Sé, Alex, Joe and Tom set Alfie free, but the talisman was pushed into touch after a great break from an ensuing scrum. Arthur's defence was top notch, his tackling saw Moseley force turnovers at mauls. The crowd on the sidelines applauded excellent support and passing by all of the side, and when determined play by Eleanor and Kiran set Alfie free Moseley were in the lead, as Alfie went the long way round the defence. Tackling was also much improved this week, but despite this Dudley eventually forced their way over. But Sé and Alfie caught Dudley napping at the restart, quick thinking by the pair set Alfie free as the defence failed to watch and Moseley had the lead. Alfie forced a turnover at a maul and double teaming by Alex and Sé kept Moseley ahead. The hooter went and Moseley had a fine win. Game 2 saw Amarr, James, Kiran (c), Aodhan, Sé, Eleanor, Arthur and Joe take the field to face Kings Norton. The rucking was a little less fierce at the outset, Moseley turning over the ball a couple of times, but Amarr and Eleanor were unfortunate to see their efforts come to naught, and Arthur and Joe were equally unlucky to run out of space down the sidelines. But the duck was broken by an amazing piece of individual play. James, who had been excellent in defence and attack, showed all of his skills in breaking through and sprinting the length of the pitch to put Moseley ahead. Although the defence was broken as KN evened the score, Alfie and Sé repeated their kick-off act to push Moseley ahead again. Back came KN from the kick-off and the scores were level again. Alex was dynamic in attack and taking not a step back in defence. Tom and Alfie provided stunning weaving runs, but still the score was level. Sé ripped the ball from an opponent and set Alfie away, but again the touchline prevented a score. Sé broke and set up a ruck close to the opposition line, but some McCaw-like dubious positioning saw Kings Nortin steal the ball and run the length of the pitch despite Alex's last ditch efforts. But Alfie had the last word, tying the scores at the kick off and the game ended 3-3. Worcester were clearly the class of the group, and so Alfie, Amarr, Aodhan, Kiran, Eleanor, Arthur, James and Joe were up against it from the beginning. And so it seemed to prove. Right from the start an aggressive Worcester side turned over Moseley possession at will despite Joe's straight running. Alex and Eleanor drove well but Moseley soon found themselves 0-4 down. At which point, Moseley suddenly found an inner steel. Arthur, James and Tom linked well, but couldn’t quite break through some stout defence. James was leading the line in inimitable fashion and when he broke through trailing tacklers it looked like Worcester would concede their first score of the day, but agonisingly the hooter went as the try line approached. 0-4 in the end but some fine teamwork in attack and defence could have seen a close score line against tough opponents. The final round robin game saw Tom, Eleanor, Alex, Arthur, Alfie, James, Joe and Aodhan take on a big Bridgnorth side. Again Moseley were slow to get started, conceding straight from the kick-off to fall 1-2 behind. James, Eleanor, Joe, Alfie and Tom connected well; the re-

cycling of the ball was exemplary, but Tom eventually ran out of space. Aodhan was to the fore as Moseley reclaimed the ball and Alfie was soon set free to level the scores. Amarr, Tom and Alfie combined to set up another attack but Moseley fell agonisingly short. Alfie and Alex double teamed the opposition to turn the ball over at a maul but from the ensuing attack Alfie again was just foiled. A killer blow followed from a turnover as Bridgnorth broke the length of the pitch, and another followed quickly. Moseley heads did not drop; Alfie, Sé, Kiran and James combined well with some excellent rucking. But in the end, the score read 1-4. Having come third in the first round, the second round of games saw a cold and wet Moseley side of Aodhan, Sé, James, Alex, Joe, Amarr (c), Arthur and Alfie start against Newport. This time the start went well; Alfie Sé and Amarr combined with Aodhan, but no breakthrough was possible. Excellent rucking by all and Sé popping up in scrum half position saw superb recycling, but tackling suddenly let the side down and Moseley suffered a series of sucker punches, repeated turnovers on the opposition line saw Moseley fall behind. At 0-2 Alfie thought he was in, but an overly honest linesman clad in a policeman's helmet pulled him back for a stud in touch. By the end Newport had won 0-4, but Moseley still had shown great improvement over previous weeks. The game against Bridgnorth seconds was Moseley’s weakest. Tiredness was setting in for all, and Moseley would eventually go down by a score line of 0-7. But a side of Alex, Eleanor, James, Kiran, Joe, Tom (c), Amarr and Sé would reclaim some pride against Old Hales in the penultimate game. Again, the first play saw a score against, but Aodhan, Kiran and Alex made great ground; the dynamism and aggression of all three was notable. James and Alex were to the fore, but another breakaway saw Moseley fall 0-3 behind. Alfie never backs down though and he grabbed Moseley's first from the kick-off. But despite Joe and Amarr's efforts no more scores would come. Especially notable was the fact that no-one gave in, twice Sé and Alex chased the length of the pitch to try to tackle breakaways, and though the tackles don't quite prevent scores, the never-say-die attitude of all the team was great to see. The final chapter at the end of a gruelling day of rugby for the team, coaches and parents saw Moseley face the Kidderminster, a repeat of the Woolacombe Bay Plate Final. It was cold and getting dark quickly, the omens didn’t look good, 90 minutes of rugby had taken their toll on small bodies and it looked like Moseley were going to struggle to field a starting 8. However, Paul’s relentless good humour and Richard’s pre-match pep talk saw a team comprised of Alex, Alfie, Aodhan, Arthur, Eleanor, James, Kiran and Tom stride out to meet hosts. The score was incidental to the real significance of the performance, but for the record Moseley went down 5 to 1. However, for the first time in the afternoon session we saw a cohesive and genuine team performance. Passing became crisper in the tackle – the work Paul and the squad did in the extended break paid off, Alfie and Tom in particular here. There was also improved ball carrying with a wider range of carriers than in most of the previous fixtures, Alex made a couple of noteworthy forays. In defence all 10 players were massive, everybody worked hard, putting in blocks and tackles time and again for themselves and each other. Of real note here was Arthur, who on more than one occasion stepped up as Moseley’s saviour to chop down the tallest and strongest player we had faced all day as he repeatedly threatened to rampage through the very heart of the Moseley back line. The praise he got from Richard at the end was well deserved. Considering the battering the 10 had taken all day nobody hid in this final match. Kiran played despite an injury, Amarr, Aodhan and Joe continually worked to support the strong work in the ruck where Alex and Eleanor time and again stepped up to take control of the ball and feed the runners. James was doing a bit of everything and seemed to constantly find the extra yard when it looked like others were flagging. His knack for being just where you hope someone is going to be just when you need them was on full display.

The moment we had been waiting for all afternoon came towards the end of the game. 4 scores down Moseley worked quick ball out to Tom who jinked out to the right before characteristically slipping past a couple of Kidderminster defenders and scoring a fantastic try. A great individual break worked off the back of a massive team effort and no less than we deserved. The final score was irrelevant and didn’t reflect the qualities of the two teams on show. At a time when they could have been forgiven for letting things slip, each and every player stood up to be counted and left the field winners. It was a great team performance to end the day and despite the score line everybody (especially the parents) was upbeat. Great progress by the Under 10's then. Special credit goes to Paul, Richard, Steve and Rob. The energy levels of the team were outstanding and the dedication by coaches and players to the practice sessions between games was a joy to behold. The link play, rucking and tackling All agreed that credit was due to Kidderminster Carolians for a well organised festival. Moseley U10s are sponsored by Travis Perkins Bournville and Police Mutual Matt Webb
