CONTENTS
From the Presidents Desk
Mr. C. Bhaskar
Dear Members,
Organization of Plastics Processors of India has since long been emphasizing on Innovation and Innovativeness. Some of you may remember that we had earlier published a series of case studies on Innovation and Innovativeness in PLASTISCOPE.
We hear that since 2000, 52% of Fortune 500 companies have merged, been acquired or gone bankrupt. Global and local competitiveness patterns continually change. The fear of obsolescence continues to haunt all entrepreneurs and organizations globally. In this environment, Innovation remains the key to survival.
Consider China for example. A recent report in The Economist, based on research by McKinsey Global Institute and PwC, confirms Chinas transition to a global Innovation powerhouse, notwithstanding the slowdown. The private sector drives innovation in China, going by the ability of companies to expand revenues and raise profits as proof of successful innovation, rather than the number of patents filed. A PwC survey also shows that Chinese companies are increasing investments in R&D faster than competitors in any other market. It debunks the notion that Chinese companies are mere copycats, capable only of incremental improvements. Data shows that Chinese companies compare with Silicon Valley firms in innovation.
China is an innovation heavyweight due to its massive catch-up in R&D investment and education. World Bank data shows Chinas R&D spend at about 1.98% of GDP in 2012. It wants to eventually match the R&D spend in the US, at 2.8% of GDP. Thats huge compared to Indias paltry 0.9% of a much smaller GDP. Indian companies spend minuscule sums on R&D and often pass off market research expenses as R&D outlay to get a tax break.
So I appeal to our Members to take firm, rapid steps to innovate products, manufacturing processes and all related systems. Encourage Thinking-out-of-the-Box . And besides our individual goals, we will also become an integral part of the Make In India initiative.
Innovation is the hallmark of K2016. Exhibitors at K-2016 will have much to offer visitors. As in the past, OPPI has tied up with Orbit for K-2016. OPPI Members may contact the OPPI Secretariat for Orbit Packages at special rates.
With Best Wishes,
C. BhaskarPresident
