The Antioxidant Network

Synergy:If one member is weak, the entire antioxidant

network is weak

Problems with current technology

• Requires body fluids

• Take 14-21 days

• Cost $25.00 to $300.00 per test

• Complicated

Blood Carotenoids

Why Measure Carotenoids?

• Skin Carotenoids - An Important Indicator of the Body’s Antioxidant Defense System

– Site of action advantage of skin carotenoids– Carotenoids are an important part of the antioxidant

defense system– Skin carotenoids are influenced by oxidative stress

(smoking, sunlight exposure, urinary MDA)– Most convenient indicator of antioxidant defense– Same specificity issues as will other health tests

Clinical Studies

Body Defense IndexUnder 10 K: Weak Antioxidant Defense Reading may indicate conditions with high oxidative stress - example in smokers who have a poor diet and do not take antioxidant supplements. _

10 to 17.5 K: Marginal Antioxidant DefenseCommon reading for people who do not take antioxidant supplements regularly and/or who eat diets low in fruits and vegetables._

17.6 to 25 K: Average Antioxidant DefenseCommon reading for people who eat diets higher in fruits and vegetables and/or take antioxidant supplements._

Above 25 K: Optimum Antioxidant DefenseCommon reading for people who eat healthy diets high in fruits and vegetables and/or take antioxidant supplements.
