PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 414 - 31 May 2003 Elderly survivors of breast cancer receive more non-cancer preventive healthcare services in the US than matched controls, say US-based researchers. They used 1997–1998 US Medicare data to compare preventive healthcare use among 5965 patients diagnosed with nonmetastatic breast cancer in 1991–1992, and 6062 matched controls with no cancer history. During the 1997–1998 period, significantly more breast cancer survivors received influenza vaccination, lipid level testing, cervical and colon examinations and bone densitometry, compared with controls. However, the between-group differences disappeared when the control group was restricted to those who had undergone mammography during 1991–1992. Enhanced participation in the healthcare system may explain the better quality of care among breast cancer patients, the researchers comment. Earle CC, et al.
