Lice Treatment

Head lice – what a nightmare! These miserable little critters can cause the biggest stress. For many mums, even the very thought that your child has head lice, or has passed it onto the whole family, including yourself can be absolutely overwhelming!

Lice are wingless insects who live on the human head and who feed off human blood. The lice can only survive for two to three days off the human body. Although lice itself is not dangerous, they are persistent and the scratching and opening of the skin can cause secondary infections.

Nits are the eggs from the adult lice and can vary in colour from a sesame seed colour to a dark brown colour. These nits are firmly attached by the lice to the shaft of the hair close to the root with a waterproof “glue” that cannot be washed or blown away.

Head Lice Treatment

Adult lice are a red-brown colour and the adults can grow to the at least 3-4mm. Although they have short legs, lice can move along the shaft of the hair at incredible speeds and can sometime be difficult to see with the untrained eye. The most common places that lice can be seen is in the nape of the neck, behind the ears and on the crown of the head. Nits take 6 – 10 days to hatch and then the nymphs mature within another 7 – 10 days before they start laying eggs. Live lice live on a head for about 30 days.
