ADDLESTONE COMMUNITY CENTRE
FORTHCOMING BAND EVENTS
Sunday 11th February – Staines Lammas
We welcome back Staines Lammas Band, a thriving community brass band based at Staines Lammas Park in
Staines under the baton of their esteemed Musical Director, Lee Woodward.
Made up of 25 amateur players, many of whom play for other local contesting bands, they are an extremely
friendly, sociable band whose main aim is to rehearse enjoyable music together and promote this at their regular
engagements.
They play a wide range of music, from traditional brass band marches to classical, film music, modern and pop
music and everything in between.
They have won Challenging Brass multiple times such is the high standard of their playing.
Don’t miss this one!
Sunday 29th April – The Cobham Band
Originally called the Cobham and District Band this band was formed in 1887 and had strong connections with
the Ancient Order of Foresters. Beginning as a drum and fife band, parish magazines of the late 19th century
show that the band took a lively part in village life and was then, a marching band. Going through various
changes over the years it became an ‘All Brass’ band in 1970.
The band embraces music of all styles and presents varied and entertaining programmes of high quality led by
their Musical Director Glenn Hayter who has been with the band since 2013.
The band has performed at a number of prestigious venues including Westminster Abbey Gardens, several
Royal Parks and The Yehudi Menuhin School in Cobham.....and now again at the Addlestone Community
Centre!

ADDLESTONE COMMUNITY THEATRE
On 20th and 21st April 2018, Lance Jones and Tony Bushell will present The Best of British, a show featuring
the songs and life of the great Cleo Laine. Seating will be at tables of eight. A bar will be available throughout
the evening. Tickets are already on sale, so don’t miss out.
Moving on to the 22nd and 23rd June, we will hold an evening of one-act comedy plays, entitled Duets. These
will be directed by Jane Ward and Graham Botterill. A delicious supper will be served and a bar will be
available. Seating again at tables of 8.
Then, on the 9th, 10th and 11th November 2018, we are presenting a powerful production to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War. This will include other local groups and will pay
especial tribute to the local people who made the supreme sacrifice.
As you can see from the above, forthcoming productions, we usually present four diverse shows during the
year, so there is something to interest everybody. If you would like to be part of this thriving theatre group,
acting, singing, back stage or front of house, call our Membership Secretary, Paul Bungard, on 01932 845649.

CHERTSEY CAMERA CLUB
Towards the end of our Autumn season, we held our quarterly
'digital image' competition, under the auspices of Surrey
Photographic Association (SPA) judge Graeme Wales LRPS
CPAGB from Cheam Camera Club. The members achieved
several high-scoring entries, which we will be taking forward as
part of the club entries into the SPA Inter-Club PDI (Projected
Digital Image) competition in May.
Our popular 'Stroll
and Shoot' sessions,
where members
enjoy an outing
together, took us in
November to see the ‘Silver Arrows’ performing on the track at Mercedes Benz World
at Brooklands, along with photo opportunities at the Historic Car auction, and to
Windsor in early December.
We welcomed the return of Fine Art photographer Viveca Koh FRPS as the visiting
speaker for our Thursday club evening in late November. Her advanced image
blending techniques lead to very artistic creations, and her growing Black & White
portfolio continues to be a source of inspiration.
The club's popular Christmas dinner rounded off our 2017 season, and
we are now looking forward to our Live Model Portraiture Evening. Our
varied programme of outings, competitions and speakers for 2018,
includes Douglas Kurn’s "Portraits of Runnymede" and William
Harvey’s "Photographing British Wildlife".
If you are
interested in
learning more,
please see our
website:
www.chertseycameraclub.uk.
Our new programme of talks, demonstrations and competitions can be found there; and also galleries of members’
images.
The section will be pleased to welcome anyone interested in photography to our meetings held in the Muriel Wise
Suite at the Addlestone Community Centre on alternate Thursday evenings, starting at 8:00 pm.

RUNNYMEDE FOODBANK
Runnymede Foodbank is a local charity whose remit is to provide an emergency three-day food parcel to local
people in food crisis. We operate foodbanks in Egham, Chertsey and two in Addlestone, under the national
umbrella organisation, The Trussell Trust. It is staffed by four part time members of staff and a large number of
volunteers, without whom we couldn’t operate. The hard work of our volunteers was recognised recently when
our delivery and warehouse team won the Runnymede & Spelthorne ‘Best Team’ award for distributing 20
tonnes of food in 2016/17.
All our clients are referred to us by local agencies, such as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, who are working with
our clients to improve their situations, something that is important to provide a sustainable solution. A food
parcel contains an assortment of non-perishable food, toiletries, household cleaning items, and, where needed,
baby supplies, such as wipes and nappies. Not only do clients receive this parcel of essentials, but we also offer
a welcoming cup of tea and a biscuit with someone who will listen to them without prejudice or judgement,
who may be able to offer suggestions for additional support.
Tesco Addlestone shoppers kindly donated over 3400kg of food in 2017 and we hope to have a new permanent
collection point in Waitrose Addlestone soon. If you would like to make a food donation, items can be dropped
off to one of our Foodbanks between 10am and 12pm (Addlestone Baptist Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays
or The Kings Centre on Fridays) or to our donation box at Revive Coffee Shop, Guildford Street, Chertsey on
Saturdays between 10am and 3pm. We are always happy to accept any in date, unopened, non-perishable food
and toiletries.
2017 was the busiest yet for The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network, with Egham and the Addlestone foodbanks
seeing their busiest month ever in December, an estimated 5,000kg of food was given out and we struggled to
keep up with the demand. Thankfully the generosity of local groups and individuals kept us well stocked. Our
annual December Tesco collection saw us collect over twice as much food than in previous years from Tesco
shoppers. We also had significant donations from companies such as CHEP Weybridge and Enterprise Egham,
and local young people, from groups including Jubilee High School, St Charles Borromeo School, TASIS and
Addlestone 1st/4th Cubs, did an amazing job collecting a huge amount of Christmas and everyday food. With
this we were able to provide 120 hampers for local individuals and families, filled with Christmas goodies and a
specific gift for each child, and in addition to our usual food parcels we could offer our clients a bag of
Christmas items to take home.
Food parcels are only one part of our work to support our community. We also provide lunches for children in
the school holidays under our Food4Lunch programme, breakfast bars and hygiene kits to pupils at a local high
school, food parcels to Staines Probation Service and our popular Eat Well Spend Less free cookery course.
As the demand and our desire to support our local community is only increasing we will be looking for new
volunteers in 2018. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in helping us, or to find out more
information about any of our services please contact us on 01932 988350 or by email

ADDLESTONE SINGERS
Despite the inclement weather on 11th December, Addlestone Singers were able to welcome many hardy souls
of all ages, to their Seasonal Concert. Addlestone Baptist church was the venue and proceedings began with the
choir giving a rousing chorus of Handel's “Joy to the World”.
The first half of the programme was a traditional mix of music. “Puer Nobis - Unto Us a Boy is Born” from the
15th century, to the more modern, “Son of Mary” by Karl Jenkins. The ladies then sang a round “Dona Nobis
Pacem” (Give us Peace) accompanied by the St. James' Bell Ringers together with choir member Mary Davey
on treble recorder.
Following an audience carol “Once in Royal Davids' City”, Carol Baxter gave a brief talk about Shooting Stars
Children's Hospice, based in Hampton and Guildford. She said the hospice provides care 365 days a year,
either at the Hospice or in patients' homes. This care costs £10 million a year – with only 10% of funds coming
from the government. Currently the Hospice is caring for 693 families locally and in west London. Carol
expressed thanks to the Addlestone Singers for their continued support in hosting the Christmas Concert in aid
of the charity.
The St. James' Bell Ringers then performed a selection of music starting with “Il est ne, Le Divin Enfant” (a
traditional French carol) followed by one from Poland and then the English “In the Bleak Mid Winter”.
After the interval and the audience carol “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” the choir gave a jolly interpretation of
Leroy Anderson's “Sleigh Bells” (complete with sound effects from two choir members with jingling bells).
Although not strictly Christmas material, the choir enjoyed singing “Panis Angelicus” by Cezar Franck.
Then something rather different from the Chairman of Addlestone Singers, Anne Edwards. Anne read out a
humorous story about Matthias, an inn keeper in Bethlehem, who had a particularly annoying night long, long
ago. Very cleverly put together using lines from various carols.

Alan Sharp, the leader of the St.James' Bell Ringers, told us a little about their hand bells. The set they were
using dated from the late 19th century and, for those interested in such things, were composed of 77% copper
and 23% tin. To have a new set made today by the Whitechapel Foundry would cost £24,000. Four magical
tunes followed ending with “We wish you a Merry Christmas” and every one joined in.
Then came a rock carol “Mary, Mary” which the choir sang with gusto and, judging by the smiles on the
audience's faces, was something different and enjoyed by all. The traditional “O Come All Ye Faithful” brought
this year's concert to an end.
Raffle prizes were claimed and thanks given, together with roses, to Musical Director, Susan Higgins, and
pianist Janet Mannan, and her (very essential) page turner. A wrapped present, looking suspiciously like a tin
of biscuits, was presented to the Bell Ringers.
11
With thanks for the generosity on the night a total of £572.13 has been forwarded to Shooting Star Chase
Children's Hospice.
The Addlestone Singers new term begins on 8th January 2018. New lady members would be welcome to join
this friendly group, meeting at the Methodist Church Station Road, Addlestone.
Sessions begin at 8pm and finish approximately 9.45pm every Monday evening, with a tea break and a chat half
way through !

THE BOURNE CONCERT BAND
The band’s Christmas Concert was held in St Peter’s Church, Chertsey, and £224 was raised for Woking
Hospice from the retiring collection. We were pleased to see a good attendance despite the sleet and cold
weather. Appropriately, the programme included music from “Polar Express” as well as traditional carols and
Christmas selections.
After a short break, we return to rehearsals on January 9th at Darley Dene School in Addlestone. The venue and
date of our Spring concert is still under consideration, so please watch our website for news.
Full details of band rehearsals and concerts are available on:
www.bourneconcertband.org.uk

PHILATELIC SECTION
We have only two meetings since our last report.
The first on Dec 1st Richard Seaborne gave members a very interesting display of Aden showing the history of
the British Protectorate, this was made to come alive with stories from Richard who worked there for a number
of years.
The meeting on 15th Dec was a trading evening when David Ager a dealer from Dorking visited us and a few
members also sold items.
We wish all ACA members a very happy and prosperous new year as we move into our 40th season as an ACA
section.
Which we will celebrate with a large stamp fair on October 27th.
New members are always welcome on a Friday night see ACA web site for dates

ADDLESTONE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Our December meeting, on Tuesday 4th, was our usual Christmas Social, at which we simply ate food brought
by members, drank wine or soft drinks, did quizzes, chatted and generally enjoyed ourselves.
The next meeting, Tuesday, 2nd January, 2018, was our New Year Members' Evening, when members give
short talks on anything which they have found of interest during the year and would like to share with others in
the Society. This is often a particularly interesting and unusual evening.. We heard two talks this time.
The first was from member Jill Williams and was on John Henry Dell (1832-1888), a local artist who was not
widely known but who lived at Thorpe Green House, originally Aden House, in the mid-19th century with his
wife Mary and their four daughters, two of whom inherited his artistic talent. Jill showed us some photographs
of the family. Her searches among the available documentation relating to John Dell uncovered several apparent
factual contradictions, so that she feels she has further research to do to try and ascertain which facts are true and
which are not: if she is successful in this task, she may have a second instalment for us next year!
The second talk was by member David Barker, and was in two sections. In the first part, he told us of the recent
discovery of a volume of Surrey photographs taken by the famous French writer Emile Zola, who had to flee
France in the 19th century and who lived in Addlestone for a time (and also in Oatlands and in Walton-on-
Thames) during his involvement in the notorious Dreyfus case, which uncovered corruption in the French army.
The photographs were part of a larger collection which was put up for auction recently, and it was hoped that the
Surrey History Trust, who have money to buy historical artefacts which arise in such circumstances, might have
been able to purchase them. Unfortunately the timing was not right for the application to them, and the
photographs went to a French buyer, which was extremely frustrating. It may be that the Surrey History Centre
will be able to contact the organisation that bought them and request copies of the Surrey photographs: we shall
have to await developments. In the second part of his talk, David reminded members about the on-going project
to publish the late Vic and Jean Gale's work on the Chertsey, Egham and Thorpe (Military) Volunteers at the
time of Napoleon. We are working together with the Egham Historical Society to ascertain exactly what area we
need to be dealing with, as Runnymede covers several local towns; and volunteers from both societies are being
sought to undertake further research and make the final publication as wide-ranging as possible, so that it will be
a fitting memorial to Vic and Jean Gale.
The February meeting is on Tuesday 6th, with a talk entitled "The Tank Factory, Chobham", which will be
given by William Suttie. This talk looks to be of particular interest to students of lost local industries, and
particularly perhaps to those concerned with military history.
The talk on Tuesday, 6th March, is "From Brooklands to Africa: the Search for the Locke Kings", by John
Pulford, Jr.: With his father, John Pulford Sr., John Jr. was for years a driving force in the Walton & Weybridge
Local History Society, which sadly had to be wound up recently after 52 years through lack of able-bodied
volunteers to run it. John Jr. works at Brooklands Museum and has a wide knowledge of Brooklands and of the
Locke Kings' connection with the area.
Come and join us at one of our Tuesday meetings (first Tuesday of each month except August) at 8 p.m. in the
Muriel Wise Suite of the Community Centre.. Our subjects are wide-ranging and our year's programme is always
on our website (www.addlestonehistory.net), with posters on various town notice-boards shortly beforehand
announcing the subject matter of the next talk. Visitors pay £3, but with membership at only £15 p.a., it might
be cheaper to join us for the year ... ? For more information, contact Ian Mawson on 01932 856919.

Classes are held in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz and Musical Theatre for children aged from 2 years, also Adult
Tap and Ballet classes. These take place at Addlestone Community Centre, All Saints in New Haw and The
Methodist Hall, Addlestone.
Miss Jakki encourages the pupils to take regular medal and grade Dance Examinations, but the main focus at
the school is on performing. Pupils are given the chance to participate in as many as 6 shows a year including
pantomimes and shows with ACT. The school has appeared at numerous venues including: Guildford Civic
Hall; New Victoria Theatre, Woking; The London Palladium (6 times); Theatre Royal, Drury Lane; Her
Majesty's Theatre ( 4 times); Sadlers Wells Theatre; The Royal Albert Hall (3 times) and Disneyland Paris (5
times).
Many pupils have taken part in professional shows and pantomimes, including "Joseph" at The New London
Theatre and the tour that included Richmond Theatre, Wimbledon Theatre and Theatre Royal, Windsor.
Complete beginners of any age are always welcome.
