Product; the Interstate Highway System; the St. Lawrence Seaway; increased military strength; improved National

Park Service; labor reforms; increased Social Security benefits; civil rights. He then lists the qualities a candidate

should possess, and endorses Richard M. Nixon, and Henry Cabot Lodge as having these qualities. He describes

the duties of the President of the United States as Chief of State, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, head

of the National Security, and guardian of free enterprise. He stresses the importance of foreign relations, and lists

the accomplishments of his administration in this field, such as Korea, Viet Nam [Vietnam]; Formosa; the

Philippines; the Suez Canal; Trieste; Iran. Eisenhower emphasizes Nixon's and Lodge's experience in foreign

affairs, and stresses that caution and deliberation are needed in international situations. He ends the speech by

pledging his vote to Nixon and Lodge, and asking the crowd to do the same.

Still photographs and selected motion picture footage of the period are combined to create a portrait of the man and

his impact on history. Included are scenes of his boyhood in Abilene, Kansas; his cadet and athletic activities at

West Point; his early military service with General Douglas MacArthur; his leadership of all Allied armies in

Europe during World War II (featuring his role as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces that landed at Normandy

and ultimately brought victory in Europe) and his two terms as President of the United States. The film also shows

the German blitzkrieg in Europe and the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. As President of the United States,

Eisenhower is shown with Vice President Richard Nixon, Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev, French President

Charles DeGaulle, and the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events surrounding such issues as school desegregation,

the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ATOMS for Peace plans, the Federal Highway

Act, the St. ¬Lawrence Seaway bill, and the statehood of Hawaii and Alaska are shown. The film gives an

overview of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library and emphasizes its important holdings. The film is narrated by

Loren Greene. This film is presented by the National Archives and Records Administration, and is distributed by

the National Audiovisual Center, Washington, DC 20409.
