PASTOR’CORNER For Saint John Vianney and Saint Thomas the Apostle

Bulletin—08/09 August 2020

Greetings Dear Parish Family,

Greetings dear parishioners both Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish and Saint John Vianney Parish. I am very pleased to have been appointed as your new Pastor.

I am very much looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to know you and your families. I have a very personable and outgoing pastoral style. I enjoy teamwork and

collaboration amongst the members of our respective parish families. Working together and mutually supporting one another are very important to me.

On Ascension Day, before Jesus Christ ascended above the clouds out of the sight of His disciples, He gave them the commandment to “love on another as I have loved you.” If we truly take this commandment to heart, we would realize that Christians are suppsed to love and support each other.

We are blessed to have “sister parishes” here at both Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish and Saint John Vianney Parish. Each parish family / community is being asked, as much as possible, to support the other parish family / community. As pastor of both parishes, I am asking that the members of each parish family support the other parish family.

In this way, through Christian love, support and mutual caring, our parish communities will flourish and grow. Others will able to tell that we are authentic Christians by our love and mutual support for each other. Our acts of kindness well speak for themselves! Yes, they will know we are Christians by our love! Be safe, be well, take care and God bless you and your families.

Prayerfully, Fr. Ben Williams, Pastor

This Sunday’s Gospel Reading:

Do we have the courage to place our

trust in the Lord? Peter thought he had

enough courage when he stepped out of

the boat as it was tossed on the waves

during a violent storm. But he became

frightened and started to sink. Though he

began to doubt, he cried out to Jesus and

the Lord saved him. When in doubt, may

we look to our Savior for strength.

Question of the Week: How can I overcome the fears

and doubts I have in my life? How can I support others

striving to overcome their own fears and doubts?

FEAST OF THE ASSUMTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Saturday, August 15, 2020 Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle—8:00am

Not A Holy Day of Obligation

In celebration of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary, Mass will be offered at Saint Thomas the Apostle at 8:00am

The Parish Community of St. john Vianney & St. Thomas the Apostle

As we continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19, it is good to remember that Catholic Charities in our Diocese continues

to be "the hands of Christ" in a world in need of greater compassion and service.

Catholic Charities Hope House ask for the following: Peanut butter, Jelly , Instant oat-

meal ,Pasta

Baking items (cake mix, cookie mix, brownie mix, etc,.)

If you would like to drop off food for Hope House -Just drop off them off at the STA Rectory Door under the

overhang. In order to ensure that social distancing is observed for both you and Fr. Ben and Dawid you do

not have to ring the door bell as the front Rectory door is checked throughout the day. The food doesn't stay

there for long

COVID—19 UPDATE AND OUR RESPONSE: MASS REGISTRATION

On August 3, in response to the increase COVID-19 cases, Gov. Murphy significantly decreased the indoor gathering ca-pacity limit to 25 persons. This reduction DOES NOT affect Masses, other religious services, or weddings. The previous rule—100 persons or 25% capacity—still stands for us.

Because of this exception, we must continue to commit to strictly adhering to the guidelines of the Diocese of Paterson and the Governor's office.

In order to follow the guidelines from the state and the diocese efficiently and effectively, we mandated that in order to at-tend Mass you must sign up via Flocknote. The link to sign up is available on our website: www.ststhomasjohn.org.

How strange right, to have to make a reservation to attend Mass? To restrict the number of people to share the Word and the Eucharist goes against who we are. Unfortunately during these uncertain times we must limit and, if necessary, turn people away at the door to do our part to reduce the chance of contracting or spreading COVID-19

Online registration is necessary for several reasons: we are able to ensure that our two churches do not go over the ca-pacity restriction 100 persons or 25% capacity. It prevents a line forming outside the church before Mass, which makes safe social distancing difficult. Online registration also gives us very important contact tracing information.

So, at this time it is important that we restate the following:

IF YOU DID NOT SIGN UP IN ADVANCE YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED INTO THE CHURCH. No exceptions. Mass registration closes at midnight on Friday, and you will not be added to the list if you call or email the parish office after reg-istration closes, even if spaces are available.

If you did not register, do not come to church with the hope an exception will be made. Please be kind, and do not put the ushers/ greeters in the uncomfortable position to have to turn you away. They are just following the rules. It is heartbreak-ing for them to have to do this.

Know that especially since the Masses are livestreamed we are under scrutiny; there have been complaints when we have gone over capacity, and there have been incidents at other places where violations were reported. Again, as a church we are held at a higher standard than bars and shopping centers, and we should be an example to follow.

It will not always be this way. We have to try, and it is hard, to be patient. We are hopeful that we may be able to add more Masses at both churches beginning in September. Please pray with us we are able to do so.

Finally a reminder: the obligation to attend Sunday Mass has been suspended until further notice. Please stay home if you feel unsafe! Both the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass and 10:00 am Sunday Mass will continue to be livestreamed on Facebook until further notice.

We thank everyone who has followed the guidelines. We appreciate your cooperation.
