■ The new NHS atlas will hopefully provoke an"OMG [Oh my god], how can we reduce theseunwanted variations?" reaction, according to theNHS’s Chief Knowledge Officer, Sir Muir Gray,speaking at the Evidence 2010 conference in London,a BMJ news article reports. The aim of the new atlas,being developed by the NHS’s QIPP* Right Careprogramme, is to highlight the "extent of variation"which should help to identify unwarranted healthinvestment and outcomes. He said that "knowingprogramme budget information was vital" allowing fordebate on the allocation of resources to a particulararea. He claims that the atlas will help to show howmuch is spent on disease with more accuracy than tothe nearest £100 million.
