    BACKGROUND

    To be a partner in the hydro power development program, NTPC Ltd has made aforay into hydro power through its maiden venture KOLDAM HEPP and drawn up

    an ambitious plan of adding approx. 3500 MW in hydro sector by the end ofeleventh plan i,e by 2012.

    As estimated by Central Electricity Authority / Central Water Commission, 1/3rd oftotal hydro electric potential is from medium sized hydro electric project.

    Keeping this in mind and to boost NTPC Ltds capacity addition program in hydrosector, the corporation has set up a wholly owned subsidiary company named NTPCHydro Limited in December 2002 to provide exclusive thrust for accelerateddevelopment of medium scale hydro power projects.

    The main objective of the company is to develop small to medium size Hydroelectricpower project up to 250 MW capacity for generation of electricity.

    NHL started its maiden venture through LATA-TAPOVAN HEP, in the state ofUttarakhand.

    Since nature of NHLs business is similar to NTPC Ltds business, it is decided to follow DOP and other
