THUC THAO VIEN - BOTANICAL / PRODUCTIVE GARDENFinal year project - Instructor: PHUNG Thi My HanhArea 435,000 square metersLocation Hanoi, VietnamDate June 2013 - National University of Civil Engineering

ABSTRACT

Under the current conditions, the vegetable garden is located on the local farms link and surrounded by ancient agricultural villages (floral, vegetable, and herb town). Therefore, the site has great potential to sustain local living landscape by year-round farming.

The motif of this project is a nostalgia garden with a strong religious concept - Mandala and the place appears as a pure vegetable field with all hidden modern facilities.

The edible landscape is able to produce foods in place and makes profit from farm-to-table services within the area. This project also aims to connect citizens with the processes of vegetable production.

THE SITE

The agricultural land is located within the green belt area of Western Hanoi.

This site is still being used for traditional farming, mainly vegetables, and projected to be an urban theme park in upcoming 20 years.

Mandala, a spiritual symbol in Buddhism, makes part of local religious and cultural heritage: the circle Mandala symbolizes Water - a source of life while two rectangle Mandala represent Knowledge - a human development resource. I designed this space imagining the ancient story about Mother Earth and Father Sky spreading life and knowledge in the ideal Universe of Mandala.

The concentric patterns on the site layout express the undulation of the fieldscape, the flow and depth of the waterscape. Resulting from the different levels of landscape structure, the buildings are hidden under the accessible greenroofs which ensure a smooth transition between levels.

The landmark design come from the ideas of food guide dynamic and wavy field moving in the wind. All of the buildings are constructed with green roofs to camouflage and. blend themselves into surrounding garden: architecture lies down to become landscape.

ABSTRACT

A carpet of clover and daisy takes over the roofscape, makes users walk through the footpath beginning from Fitness and Yoga Center on the ground level and.

Located on two different ground levels, building is designed with smooth integration of in-outside spaces: terraces opens toward the sun, the garden, and two levels of waterscape.

A glazed ellipse skylight maximizes natural light to the indoor garden and terrace dining halls (on two floor levels), thereby the guest can contemplate the view and be in contact with the nature in 360° panorama.

Herbs and fruit trees running through the restaurant are interpersed with furnitures, and the diners can enjoy fresh meals, drink tea and feel the fragrance of herbs around.

HANOI TRAVEL-FARM-FEED NETWORKfood distribution along traffic system

ABSTRACT

Responding to the competion's calling for a vision of urban food consumption and waste management, I represent a combination of high-tech farming system and traffic network in Hanoi. The elevated farming system will optimize in-place food distribution to feed the residents living along the road effectively.

There are some similarities between the circulatory system in human body and metropolis road traffic system. Circulatory system is extremely complicated due to the interconnection of blood vessels and transport blood throughout entire body. Likewise, the road traffic system of each city involves thousands of highways, roads and alleys as well as other facilities for transportation. For this reason, in our opinion, the road traffic system is considered as the circulatory system of the city.

THE SITE

The design is planned to attach to median strips along traffic network in Hanoi. Therefore, at least six lane width roads are sufficient for the construction.

Giai Phong Road is the part of National Route 1A runs from Hanoi to the outhern provinces. Road length is 3.3 km and devided into 8 lanes.

• Inside pedestrian bridge

• Central module

The system worked as a community aquaponics farm, a self-service market, an agricultural information centre and especially a future productive cityscape along the street.

The system included new functions such as trading, community spaces at central module and pedestrian bridges in order to provide agricultural education as well as encourage the citizens to use hygienic and fresh foods.

Bus and bus stops also help transport vegetable and fish to the households on smaller roads, maximize the delivery of fresh food to a majority of citizens.

KIRIGAMI IN LANDSCAPESelf-Initiated Design Projects Date: August 2014

ABSTRACTThe design comes from the thought of creating various interesting 3D architecture from an use of folds, and cuts within just one single piece of paper. The use of Kirigami patterns in landscape design expectedly creates space efficiency with quality lighting, natural ventilation, and smooth transition between the building and the nature.
