3. Review of Agenda. Chair Hirschler reviewed the agenda and indicated the primary
purpose of this meeting was to act on all proposals for NFPA 557.
4. Approval of Minutes. The minutes of the October 6, 2009 meeting were approved
with no modifications.
5. Review of Revision Cycle Information. Ms. Collette gave the Technical Committee
Meeting Introduction presentation and reviewed the Fall 2011 revision cycle
information for NFPA 557 (See Page 4).
6. Preparation of NFPA 557 ROP. All public proposals included in the agenda
package were addressed and committee proposals were generated. See NFPA 557
letter ballots and the Fall 2011 Report on Proposals (ROP) for committee actions on
these proposals. As this is the first edition of the document, the committee fully
reviewed the current draft of NFPA 557 and made additional editorial and technical
changes that will be reflected in the ROP draft.
7. Other Business. The committee formed a task group consisting of M. Hirschler, C.
Beyler, D. Bueche, and E. Buc to review the ROP draft of NFPA 557 and identify
issues to be addressed by or at the ROC meeting. Ms. Collette will serve as a liaison
to this task group.
Ms. Collette also reviewed briefly the revision cycle for NFPA 555 which has entered
into the Annual 2012 revision cycle (See Page 5). Due to the revision history of this
document, the committee agreed that a meeting via conference call would be most
appropriate. The ROP meeting for NFPA 555 has been scheduled for Wednesday,
January 19, 2011 from 1:00 to 4:00 EST.

8. Scheduling of next meeting. The ROC meeting for NFPA 557 is tentatively
scheduled for April 5-6, 2011 in Denver, Colorado. Specific meeting location
information will be forthcoming.
9. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned by Chair Marcelo Hirschler at 11:45 am
on Thursday, August 5, 2010.

Revise text to read as follows:This chapter presents techniques for estimating the heat release rate for various individual items or
products in a compartment, based on the results of direct measurements. Heat release rate is a crucial property forassessing fire safety, because its maximum value is the numerical representation of the peak intensity of a fire. Therefore, estimates of heat release rate are critical in predicting whether flashover can occur in a compartment, basedon the items or products contained in the compartment and the distances between them. Sections 9.2 through 9.8present a hierarchy of the preferred techniques for such estimates. Two documents recently developed Some guidancedocuments issued by standards making organizations will be of potential assistance to anyone considering methods forevaluating potential for flashover: ASTM E 2061, , andASTM E 2280,
and NFPA 556,. The first of these former of these two guides investigates fire hazard assessment in a
specific occupancy (a rail transportation vehicle, which is one type of compartment), and the latter of the guides thesecond one investigates fire hazard assessment of a specific product (upholstered furniture in a patient room of a healthcare occupancy) and the most recent one investigates the use of such techniques, and others, to evaluate and lower firehazard in passenger road vehicles (such as cars) .
Adding reference to NFPA 556.

Revise text to read as follows:Furniture calorimeter test methods are useful techniques to assess the heat release and other fire properties of
individual fuel packages. UL 1975, , isintended to assess the heat release and rate of fire development of products containing foamed plastics, to be used fordisplays, stage settings, and other decorative applications. It uses a 340 g wood crib as the ignition source. Morerecently, NFPA 289, Standard Method of Fire Test for Individual Fuel Packages, was developed as a furniturecalorimeter test which uses several gas burner ignition sources, at incident gas levels of 20 kW, 40 kW, 70 kW, 100, kW,160 kW and 300 kW, to expose individual fuel packages.
Add reference to a new furniture calorimeter test standard.

Revise text to read as follows:Some codes address testing of decorative objects constructed of foamed plastic, and such as stage
settings, foamed panels, and portable exhibit booths, by means of UL 1975,which is similar to using a product calorimeter with an ignition source of 20 kW.
UL 1975 uses a 340 g wood crib as the ignition source. More recently, those codes have added the option of usingNFPA 289, Standard Method of Fire Test for Individual Fuel Packages, with the gas burner at the incident gas level of20 kW as an alternative approach.
Add reference to a new furniture calorimeter test standard.
