Neighborly Act of Kindness

This last leaf season, my one block street was missed on the first schedule. By the second scheduled collection date, the street curbs were covered with fallen leaves. The wind and rain scattered the semi-neat piles into such a disarray it made leaf collection a challenge.

When the city arrived to make the one and only collection, our new neighbor took it upon himself to help. Our newest neighbor went up and down both sides of our street raking the leaves from the curb of each house to the street. This made the job easier for the street department crews and it ensured that our street was cleared. When I went out and thanked my new neighbor for his neighborly act, he replied with his motto:

“Be the neighbor you would like your neighbor to be.”

Words to live by!

With Presidents’ Day nearing, it’s important to take a moment and reflect on those who served as chief executive of our country. And while you may be well-versed in textbook facts about each president, you may have never heard of some of their pet peeves, quirks, and pastimes. Listed are a few of our past Presidents & their “quirks”.

George Washington (1732-1799)Weird fact: Washington’s teeth weren’t made of wood.Contrary to popular belief, George Washington’s teeth weren’t wooden after all. Rather, his dentures comprised a peculiar combination of animal teeth, brass screws, lead, gold wire, hippopotamus ivory, and even bone.

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)Weird fact: Adams skinny dipped in the Potomac River daily. This early-19th century president didn’t mind going for a dip in the Potomac River buck naked. As weird and out of the ordinary as it sounds today -- especially for a person of such great political importance -- it was a common way to bathe in rivers during that era. Evidently, a female gossip columnist sat on his clothes during one of his morning dips, and she refused to give them to him until he agreed to an interview.

Martin Van Buren (1782-1862)Weird fact: Martin Van Buren is accredited for the phrase OK.Have you ever thought about the origin of some common-day idioms? The origin of “OK” derives from the reelection campaign for Martin Van Buren in 1840. Buren had adopted the nickname, Old Kinderhook simply because he was born in Kinderhook, New York. His supporters used to shorten the name to OK during rallies -- and the rest is history.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)Weird fact: Every member in Roosevelt’s family owned stilts.Theodore, or Teddy, Roosevelt had a secret pastime -- walking on stilts. Apparently, each and every one of Roosevelt’s family members had their own individual pair. Even the First Lady had a set of her own.

Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924)Weird fact: Wilson painted his golf balls black during the winter.Woodrow Wilson is often remembered as a staunch advocate for democracy and world peace as well as an academic. He had another passion that perhaps isn’t as well known -- golfing. President Wilson loved to golf no matter the season. In the winter months, when layers of snow covered the ground, he painted his golf balls black so that he could easily retrieve them amid a blanket of white.

NNA is very please to welcome back A’roma Pizza!

A’Roma Pizza first opened up back in 1965. It’s been closed since 1998. Co-owner Bruce Ryan said that they saw an opportunity and thankfully for everyone, they took it.

Shaun Beiswanger, co-owner, said that not only is the building the same on the outside, it’s the same on the inside. He stated that they did that on purpose because it takes people back to 20 years ago to the last time they were here .

Not only is the building the same, they brought back the fan favorite dishes that were on the menu when they closed. Things like their famous pizza, sausage rolls made with homemade sausage & their amazing grinders. Not only are they using their same recipes, they have the same phone number!!

A’Roma Pizza is located @ 1123 E. State Blvd. In case you forgot, their number is (260) 484-4012.
