The station is located between Sydenham railway station and the Wolli Creek Junction. It opened in 1884 with the construction of the Illawarra railway line to Hurstville.

The station opened in 1855, as one of the original stations on the Sydney to Parramatta rail line (Ashfield, Burwood, and Homebush). It was serviced by ten steam trains a day. In 1878 the station was moved from the end of Station Street to the fork of King Street and Enmore Road.Until the 1960s, Newtown was a major hub for train-tram transfers. Electric tram services were centred there and the old Newtown tram depot still stands next to the station.

Sydenham station, originally named Marrickville, opened in 1884 with the construction of the Illawarra railway line to Hurstville. The station name was changed when the line to Bankstown opened in 1896.

St Peters station opened on 15 October 1884 with the construction of the double-track Illawarra railway line to Hurstville. The line was quadruplicated on 22 June 1913.

The railway line to Bankstown opened in 1895. The station was known as Illawarra Road during construction. Later, when it was decided that Marrickville was a more appropriate name, the original Marrickville station was renamed Sydenham.
