February was a fun packed month here at Nancy Young Elementary!
On February 12th, the Great Scott came and presented a Books are Full of Magic assembly. His visit was a wonderful addition to our One Book/One School program. I would like to thank Lianne McCoskey, Sherri Nugent, and the entire One Book/One School committee for making this program such a success. The PTA would like to extend a huge thank you to the Intermec Foundation which approved a grant request in the amount of $3,000.00. This money will be used to defer costs related to the One Book/One School program. Thank you to Rich Jachimiec for applying for the grant.
NYE Night at the Wolves was Sunday, February 15th. A great time was had by all who attended. Thank you Zena Weir for putting together another great social event for NYE families.
Candy Land!!On Friday, Februrary 20th, Young Daughters and their dates danced into the night surrounded by candy! When our guests weren’t on the dance floor, they could be found next door, in the Candy Café, enjoying all of the fabulous treats, including Cotton Candy. Thank you to all of our decorators. They did a fabulous job turning the school into a Candy Land. The snacks, drinks, and decor were excellent in the Candy Café thanks to Kathleen Erdman and Jen Weisman. I truly appreciate everyone who helped to decorate and volunteered throughout the evening.
Subway Restaurant Night was on February 24th. From the crowds my family saw at the North Eola location, I am guessing it was a good night. We had fun seeing friends and getting a chance to catch up outside of school. Thank you Zena Weir for organizing this event.
Finally, a huge thank you to Dr. Karen Sullivan, District 204 superintendent. Dr. Sullivan shared some valuable information with parents at our February PTA meeting. We appreciate Dr. Sullivan taking time out of her busy schedule to discuss the current state of District 204 with us.
Don’t forget Mother/Son Night is coming up on March 13th at Main Event in Warrenville.
Our next PTA meeting is on Wednesday, March 11th, 2015, at 9:30 am in the MPR. The nominating committee will be submitting a slate of PTA officers for 2015-2016 school year.
Mari Walbridge
NYE PTA President
Dear Young Families,
Young students have begun their participation in PARCC standardized testing, which replaces the ISAT for 3rd-5th grade students. Students are taking tests on laptops and things are moving along smoothly. Our students and teachers have participated in many learning experiences over the course of the school year to help our students be prepared for this assessment opportunity. Thank you to the PTA for providing our students with testing snacks.
Young staff continue to participate in professional development that focuses on the common core learning standards in ELA and math. We also are talking about effective engagement strategies to help keep students actively participating in the learning process through paired and grouped learning discussions as well as through cooperative learning projects.
We are still collecting names of incoming kindergarten students for the 2015-16 school year. Please contact the school office to pre-register your child for kindergarten.

The Memory Book committee is asking parents of all 5th grade students to submit photos for this year's book. Each student will have a half page in the book dedicated just to him or her, and it will include a kindergarten photo and a fifth grade photo. Parents may upload two portraits or candid shots of their choosing (one
from Kindergarten and one from 5th grade) to Shutterfly at:
https://nye5thgradememorybook20142015.shutterfly.com/
You will need to log in to Shutterfly with your own account (these are free to create), and request membership to the NYE memory book site. Once approved, you may begin uploading your photos to the appropriate classroom folders. Photos of individual students are due as soon as possible.
In addition to individual portraits, we are gathering candid photos from kindergarten to present of current 5th grade students from any school events. Please begin looking through your old photos, and bring your camera to any of this year's activities!

Dolphin Dash 2015 Needs Your Help!!
The 2015 Dolphin Dash is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, 2015. The Dolphin Dash is a PTA sponsored Fundraiser for Nancy Young. It is our largest fundraiser for the school. Funds raised in the past have gone towards events such as 5th Grade Memory Book, Art Awareness, One Book/One School, Field Day, Family Social Nights/Events, Classroom Parties, and Field Trips for the Classrooms.
This year, we are in need of volunteers to help with the Dolphin Dash. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer before the run and/or during the run. At this time, the PTA does not have the adequate number of volunteers needed to move forward with the planning of the Dolphin Dash. This event has always been a big hit with our students, families, and staff. We are hoping that volunteers will come forward to assist with the Dolphin Dash and once again, we can have a successful run to help our entire school!
Months of planning and work are put into this fundraiser. We have several committees that need to have someone to run them and volunteers to work with the chairperson(s). Please note that volunteer opportunities can occur during as well as outside of the school day.
Our biggest shortfall this year is with the Silent Auction, which raises the most funds from the Dash. This year, we do not have anyone to run the Silent Auction or to be on the committee. We have knowledgeable and experienced past committee members that would be willing to work with and train the new chair/committee members. Chair(s) or Committee Members for the Silent Auction would be involved in soliciting donations from previous sponsors, organizing the donation packages that are received, planning the bid sheets for the day of the race, setting up for the silent auction, and running the silent auction the day of the race. We would be delighted to have anyone help, as there are many of us who have worked with the run for the past years and our children will be leaving Nancy Young. We would like to train new volunteers so that the race can continue to run in the future and continue to raise the money needed for so many important PTA events.
Besides the Silent Auction, there are a number of other committees that need volunteers. Some include Publicity, Sponsorship, and Breakfast.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Jen Weisman, at [email protected].
We look forward to a successful Dolphin Dash!!!
