NEWSLETTER TO PARENTS and CARERS NOVEMBER 2013

HEADTEACHER’S LETTER

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back from the week‘s break to the ‗dark‘ half term of the school year...but with 5

th November

and not many weeks until Advent and then Christmas, there are compensations for the fewer hours of daylight. Practically speaking, we have advised students of the need for extra care on the way home, especially if they have been staying late for a practice, rehearsal or fixture at the end of the school day, and for Year 7 students in particular. Meanwhile, one of the big features in the learning life of the school at this time of year is the first Interim Review which will be coming home for all students – indeed; some have already gone out to you. These are our first indicators about how well progress and study are going this school year so far. There are some changes to them as you will see if you compare last year‘s with this one, but there are explanations with the reviews to clarify those. We hope that parents and carers find these useful. We are always grateful for feedback, about an individual student and/or about the approach in general. Next week we come once again to our Remembrance services and assemblies in school. We shall be introducing Year 7 to our War Memorials project in their assembly this Friday (8

th) with thanks to

Ms Lee-Adamson. Nile House assembly will be the main focus on Monday 11th, with a piper and a

veteran present to ensure that the importance of this event is appreciated by all of us. Our thanks to Mr Hall and to Mrs Parish for this once more this year, and to Mrs Richardson (for playing ‗The Last Post‘) and to Mrs Hodgson for sustaining the War Memorials project and for keeping students informed about it. It is also the time of year when we perform our contribution to the local version of the national Shakespeare Schools’ Festival. Thanks again to Ms Southwell for producing our ‗Antony and Cleopatra‘ this year, which can be seen in Langholm on Monday evening or, more likely perhaps, in Margaret Sewell Hall on Thursday 14

th. It only last half an hour and I hope that families will come

along to support and to enjoy the performance. Thank you. As ever the following pages are crammed with good activities which students have been involved with and then, in Forthcoming Events, where we hope that you and they will be. There is plenty of sport to read up about, and some interesting visits ahead too – we are off to The Royal Exchange, Manchester, on 23

rd to see ‗Sweeney Todd‘, for example. The inter-house Chess competition, Future

Chef, and much more besides lie ahead, along with mock exams in December for Year 11 – much to look forward to, then! Sadly, we say farewell next week, on 12

th November, to Mrs Mark, House Tutor for Kilimanjaro

House. She has looked after our students very well, and she now moves back towards her nursing training as she takes on a new role with CAMHS, for which we wish her most well. Ms Bowes will be taking over as Kilimanjaro House Tutor. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Yours sincerely

Headteacher

CHAPLAINCY

Thought for the Day This half term begins with Remembrance, but also includes the national Anti-Bullying week, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Advent and, of course, Christmas. The topics we are going to be looking at in form time and in assemblies will include these as well as relevant news topic for young people. Remembrance Each year on 11th November, we keep the two minutes‘ silence as a school at 11am. On Monday 11th November Nile House will be holding their annual house Remembrance Service, with the moving presence of a piper and a veteran. On Friday 8th November, Year 7 will be having a Remembrance assembly, when Ms Lee-Adamson will introduce to them our school War Memorial project. You can find details of that on the school‘s website, by scrolling down the home page until you find the link on the right hand side. Trinity School is privileged to have three war memorials in school, two in Devonshire Hall from the former Carlisle Grammar School, and one in the former Creighton entrance, for former students of the Creighton School. On the 11th November the House Captains will hold a short Remembrance service at our memorial in the old Creighton entrance at 11am. Mrs Hodgson and Ms Lee-Adamson have led research on these memorials to find the stories behind the names. We already know that one of them was a spy and was parachuted behind enemy lines, and one a Spitfire pilot. Many students have been able to trace links in their own families to these people from a very different past, and the WW1 battlefields trip always includes some students paying tribute to someone from their family whose name is also recorded on the memorial in Belgium and northern France.

Prayer The Prayer workshops we held on the 21st – 25th October during form registration with Year 8 students were successful and students engaged well in exploring prayer and how it can happen through different activities. We hope to run the workshops again later in the year with Year 7 and Year 9 students. We are also looking to set up two small prayer spaces round the school, one in the Sixth Form Centre and one in the 11-16 school. More on this later in the year. Year 7 Thanksgiving and Welcoming Service On Tuesday 22nd October we had a Service of Welcome and Thanksgiving at Carlisle Cathedral for our Year 7 students. They had all visited the cathedral already, and so were familiar with it as a building and with its history and importance in the history and city of Carlisle. During the service The Gideons gave out New Testaments to all the Year 7 students and we are thankful to Mr Braithwaite from the Gideons, who came and spoke to us about the Bible and how they could use it. Students from all Year 7 forms participated in the service and did very well. We would like to thank all the Year 7 students for their good behaviour during the trip and for the contributions that they made to the Bishop‘s Harvest Appeal.

INFORMATION Attendance A good education is key to helping young people fulfil their potential and develop the skills they will need in later life. Regular school attendance is vital to achieving these things, which is why we take it very seriously and why the law says that parents must make sure their children are educated. Some might say that 90% is a good level of attendance – it isn‘t: actually it is the equivalent of missing half a day every week, four weeks every year and a whole school year over a ten year period of education. Our students have a target of 95% attendance but we encourage them to aim for 100% which is why every term we send letters home when students achieve this. Your support in making sure that your child attends school regularly is much appreciated. Mr Watchman Grab and Stay The schools caterers, Mellors, are introducing a new initiative for students called Grab Bag. This allows students to beat the lunchtime queues through a pre-ordering system. All they need to do is fill in a pre-order slip available from reception or by the revaluers, choose from a selection of sandwiches, baguettes or rolls then pop along to the dining hall with their payment card and place their order before 8.30am. The Grab Bag will then be available for collection from Creighton Hall where they can sit and enjoy their lunch with friends. If they miss the 8.30am deadline a selection of sandwiches etc will be on sale in Creighton Hall too. This will ease some of the congestion in the main dining hall. Year 7 - Changes to groupings in Art, CDT, HE and Learn to Learn Starting from Monday 18

th November, Year 7 students will be placed into new teaching sets for Art,

CDT, HE and Learn to Learn. The new groups are based on assessments from assignments which have been undertaken since September. This will allow us to ensure that work is set at the correct level for your child to make good progress. Schoolcomms - New communication systems – Have you signed up yet? As many of you know we have launched a new communication text and e-mail system. Parents complete a form giving us details of their e-mail address and mobile phone number and this will enable us to pass on information to you quickly and efficiently either by text and/or email. The new system can be used on any PC, laptop and tablet or by using a free Smartphone app. An application form has already been sent out, but if you require another one please call in to main reception, phone us on 516051 or email at [email protected] . So far we have sent out the monthly Newsletter and Subject Information sheets for some year groups and over the coming school year we intend to roll out a number of projects including: Rewards information, text notification to parents if your child is not in school, student timetables and examination timetables, information on behaviour issues sent home regularly, trip information, club timetables, etc, important messages such as snow closures, invitations to parents‘ evenings and other important events, warnings of student work deadlines and homework emailed to parents and students. (for the students to complete) Instrumental/Singing Tuition Fees 2013/14 A reminder to parents/cares to return consent forms and relevant deposits as soon as possible. Invoices for music fees are currently being produced and will reach you shortly. If a consent form and deposit have not been received the student may not be allowed to continue with lessons. If you have a query or you require further information please contact the Finance Office on 01228 516051 ext 215.

Mrs A Larking, Finance Manager Nestle Box Tops for Books The Library is once again collecting Nestle cereal Box Tops for Books tokens. These can be handed in at Reception or placed in the box in the Chapman Library. Any donations would be gratefully received: the more we collect, the more free books for the Library! Morrisons’ Let’s Grow Vouchers We are collecting Morrisons‘ Let‘s Grow vouchers again this year to go towards equipment for the Landscape Team. Please send any vouchers collected into school and place in the Let‘s Grow Box at main reception or take to the Nile House Office.

RECENT EVENTS Remembrance Students from Trinity School and the Carlisle Dance Academy launched the Poppy Appeal on Saturday 26

th October.

Of all the schools in Carlisle invited to take part by the Royal British Legion, Trinity Sixth Form was the only school to respond. When asked how they would like to support the launch, they decided to organise a high profile ‗flash-mob‘, which required impressive powers of co-ordination- and that was before the dance had even begun! Several members of the Sixth Form (including Bethan Nicholson, Tatjana Lipinski and Georgina Campbell) showed great skill and initiative in persuading over 40 students to take part and organising a series of rehearsals. In a stroke of genius, Bethan and Tatjana persuaded the Carlisle Dance Academy to take part too. Huge thanks should go to Laura Irwin of the Dance Academy, who choreographed the flash-mob. The mob descended on Carlisle town centre at 1.30pm sharp and created quite an impact. The students were given huge support by family and friends, appeared in the local press and have uploaded the dance on to YouTube. It was a unique event and Mrs Wadsworth from the British Legion said ‗It was really brilliant. It is important to show that young people support the British Legion and the veterans of recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan‘. Senior Maths Challenge On Thursday, 7

th November senior students took part in the Senior Maths Challenge, which is aimed

at 16-19 year olds studying mathematics or at students no longer studying maths but who have completed their GCSE (or equivalent). The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes and takes place in school under normal exam conditions. The top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate. Top performing students are invited to take part in follow on rounds and the very best can represent their country in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

ECITB Roadshow On Wednesday, 23

rd October, Year 8 students took part in The Engineering Construction Industry

Training Board‘s interactive Theatre-in-Education Roadshow, ‗Be a part of Engineering Construction‘. The Roadshow is designed to illustrate to students that there are exciting and prosperous careers available to them in this ever-growing industry. The team of highly skilled actors explored how apprenticeships or a university route can lead to long and successful careers in engineering construction. Financial Capability Programme Year 9 students took part in this lively seminar presented by ‗Inspire2Achieve‘. The programme included such subjects as ―Bank jargon, activity and Fraud‖, budgeting, borrowing/debt, mobile phone activity, wage slip activity and tax, and is designed to give young people a clearer understanding of the importance of managing their money. Paper Birds - Verbatim Theatre Workshop Paper Birds are a professional theatre company who regularly tour plays addressing relevant current issues. ‗Thirsty‘, for example, explored the problem of binge drinking. The group were in school on Wednesday 23

rd to work with Drama students from Years 11, 12 and 13 to help them hone their

practical skills. They provided inspirational guidance and the visit was much appreciated and enjoyed by all who attended.

DofE Gold Award Canadian Canoe training The weekly expedition training sessions for this year‘s Gold Canadian canoe group are well under way and on Saturday 19

th October they had their first practical session on Thirlmere. It was a superb

day with the group really enjoying the session. Thanks to Mr Wright and Mrs Ledingham who gave up their time voluntarily for the event. Over the coming weeks the group will be finishing off their map work and navigation sessions before, later in the term, planning the route for their four day qualifying expedition on Loch Lomond in June 2014.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS Future Chef 2014!! Trinity students have been taking part in Future Chef, a national cooking competition for the last 7 years. We have had great success, with four students making it as far as the Regional Finals in Manchester and two students making it right through to the national final in London! There are four rounds to the competition. The first of these, the school heat takes place on Monday 11

th November at Trinity. At the school heat stage students have an hour of cooking time to prepare,

cook and present a main course for two people keeping within a budget of £5.00. The dish should show a good variety of skills including; workmanship, creativity and presentation, composition taste and flavour and menu balance. This is a fantastic competition for all those budding master chefs out there and there are some brilliant prizes to be won. The winner of the school heat will be mentored by Chris Austin, head chef of Davids restaurant in Carlisle in preparation for the next round.

Young Enterprise – Recipe Ideas! A group of Year 12 students are taking part in a scheme called Young Enterprise where students create a company and a product and sell it to the general public in competition with other schools around Carlisle. ‗Diverse‘ (Trinity School‘s young enterprise company) are making a Recipe Book called ―A Taste of Carlisle‖ which is a compilation of recipes from popular local restaurants and well-loved family recipes from the people of our city. We would really like parents to get involved so if you have any family recipes that you would be willing to donate to our recipe book, please send them to [email protected]. Please include details such as ingredients, serving suggestion etc. Thank you for your support,

Diverse Learning Theme The learning theme for this half term is the Five Rs (Reflective, Resilient, Resourceful, Responsible, Reasoning) and the Five Cs (Team roles – Coordinator, Charter, Creator, Clarifier, Communicator) Students continue to be rewarded across the school using the Five Rs and this information is sent out with interims. There will be a greater emphasis on team work as we approach Christmas. Students in Year 7 will learn more about this in Learn to Learn lessons and the Freeze Day planned for 17th December. Year 11 Revision Skills Students in Year 11 will have a short revision workshop this month to help them to plan revision for their mock exams in December. This will complement the seminar that they had with Learning Performance during Year 10. Students will learn about their own learning style and will be given some suggestions on how to revise according to their learning style. They will be given a booklet with different ways of revising which we hope they will make use of when mock exams begin. We will make the slides used in the presentation to students available via the website after the event. BBC Bitesize has a mind mapping facility which some students find helpful. This can be found using this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maps/index.shtml

Over 40 children took part in our annual primary hockey festival. Year 5 children came from Houghton, Kingmoor Junior and Robert Ferguson School to take part. Our team of Sixth Form Sports Leaders did a fantastic job of planning and leading all of the activities. HOUSE NEWS Amazon House We had a fabulous Love Amazon week the last week before half term, raising just over £100 to support our adopted Jaguar. We had something happening every lunchtime with food tasting, bulb planting, cake stall, quizzes, raffle, but perhaps the most fun was Fishing for Frogs—with every successful fisherman getting a chocolate frog!! Everyone learnt a lot about the Amazon with clips playing sounds and images all over school! Everyone had a great time, but Mrs Walton is shattered!! Thank you to everyone—staff, students and parents for all donations—very gratefully received. The winner of the Heroes tub in the raffle was Maisy Harrison 8 MNT. Mrs Walton Everest House Everest House students have had a lot to celebrate this month. 7ILI organised a luxury cupcake sale to raise funds for our House charity: Second Chances. Mr Lindner‘s cupcakes were not only a beauty to behold but tasted every bit as gorgeous as they looked! Assisted by Mrs Barwick, Mr Lindner and Everest House students Sophie Atkinson, Rebecca Heyworth, Kasey Carruthers and Kate Sampson, 7ILI raised over £200 - a fantastic achievement. Other fantastic achievements have come in the shape of some sports stars of the future: Megan Cowen and Chloe Hoodless are members of Carlisle Dance Academy and both did very well in their recent dance exams and a special mention must go to Matthew Douglas who has been selected to play for Carlisle United Under 18 squad in the FA Youth Cup despite being only 15. Our list of Everest House Stars of the Week is a glowing success – look out all of you twinkly people for a special treat just before Christmas. Mrs Armstrong

Kilimanjaro House There have been many success stories in Kilimanjaro house of late….. We are extremely proud of Adil Raza 7SLA, Avran Millar 10LMI and Lewis Jackson 10LMI who all played in the Cumbria School‘s chess league at the end of October and represented both the house and the school. Well done! For our avid readers of Carlisle Living, you may have noticed that our very own Lydia Graham 10LMI featured as the ‗One to watch…‘ due to her success with rowing. Lydia won a silver medal in Northern Inter Regional Contest. Lydia is ranked in the top 6 in the country and she trains four times a week at Talkin Tarn. We are very proud of how well she did in the Inter Regional Regatta. Finally Josh Morley 11 PBA has been selected for the Carlisle United under 18 squad to play in the FA Youth Cup against Accrington Stanley. We wish him every success for his match, a huge achievement. Mrs Moody Nile House Congratulations to our Nile House Prize winners: Amber Patterson (JST) for French, Stephanie Birrell (JST) for History, Amy Brown (BPA) for ICT, Nathan McStay (JST) for Mathematics, Glen Laurie (BPA) for Technology: CDT, Approach to Learning Prizes go to Savannah Middleton (JST), Kloe Wood (JST), Jacob Stedman (BPA), Charlotte Wright (BPA) and Bobbie Little (BPA) with the House Prize going to Kieran Patience and Service to the School to Jasmine Garbutt (BPA)

Our House charity is a home and educational centre for over 120 young orphan girls from all across Tanzania called Bethsaida Orphanage. If you have any old or unwanted sports clothing or anything you would like to donate it would be very much appreciated. All you have to do is bring the items in and hand them in to house office.

Reece Dixon and Alex Jefferson, 11LTH, were selected to play for the U18 sixth form football team and have successfully played 3 matches with them. Winning all 3 games, they have reached the final 16 in the North of England. Mr Hall
