From the Principal

So pleased to see a very positive write up in today’s Advertiser about the progress our students make. My working dot points for the article were these:

· Booleroo Centre District School has held at its heart of planning, high expectations and improvement. Our motto is “Strive to Excel” and our values are Resilience, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility.

· Students value the SACE and strive to excel.

· These high expectations are mirrored in staff actions, the students themselves and also in our parent community.

· Staff have regularly attended opportunities provided by the SACE Board through workshops and online training and when possible have been moderators themselves to learn what the expectations are and pop these into practice with our students.

· Staff learn where the students are at, teaming with the student to work on where they need to go and guide the student on how to get there.

· Staff often offer after hours tuition, tuition during holidays and/or are using technology to create discussion groups centred on learning.

· Staff work in partnership with other staff and schools in the Flinders Partnership to design programs and moderate student work to a standard. Staff also network outside of the partnership, for example with the Mid North Secondary Education Cooperative (MNSEC) of which we are also a partner.

· Students endeavour to make the most of opportunities presented to them by our staff.

· Our students are also highly engaged with the Vocational Education Training aspect of SACE and are successful in this realm as well.

· Our students have the support from all teachers in their learning, from

reception through to year 12.

Kindy News

On Tuesday morning we went for a walk to the oval for a BCDS Sports Day race practise. All the children had a go and then we watched some school kids practising their triple jump. Before lunch we mixed individual muffins which we ate for afternoon recess. Children have also been enjoying our doctors surgery role-play, practising fine-motor skills with the sensory table, practising literacy skills with the 'Green Sheep' story table and painting sun-flowers from our garden.

Next week is busy with Kindy chats on Monday, Tuesday we have CYWHS checks for some children and on Thursday we are going on a nature play excursion to Melrose. The Kindy is currently looking for wood off-cuts for woodwork. If you are able to help us out please contact Marianne or Karen at the Kindy.

Primary News

All primary students are currently busy practising their skills for the 2019 Sports Day to be held at BCDS next Friday 8th March with Wilmington and Melrose students. R-5 students will meet in the gym at 8.45 am for an official welcome. This will be followed by running events and a series of tabloid events. This year students will also be competing for a R-5 shield. A programme will be sent home in the near future outlining the day in greater detail. Could we also please remind parents we will have an official photographer on the day and that spectators are to only photograph their own children? With the weather reaching high temperatures this week, in preparation for Sports Day, if the temperature is 36°C or above Sports Day will be cancelled for next Friday, if it is 34°C or above a modified Sports Day will run for R-5 students. This is according to Port Pirie Temperature on GTS BKN news the night before. There will be sunscreen and water available on the day. See you all there.

Congratulations to the award winners for the last assembly:

R/1/2 class – Wyatt, Frankie, Deshae, Braxton, Matisse, Sophia, Kai (absent), 2/3/4 class – Zaiden, Milla, Zander, Jemma, 5/6 class – Claire, Mikayla, Zali, Aidan

School Immunisation Program

Protection produced by some vaccines will decline over time and booster doses may be needed to ensure high

levels of protection are maintained. A booster dose given in high school will provide protection over a longer period

of time. Vaccines such as the human papillomavirus HPV vaccine are more effective if delivered at a specific age.

Meningococcal vaccines are also recommended for students in senior high school years. Vaccines delivered through

the school program are made available at no cost under the National Immunisation Program.

Eligibility: To be eligible to receive free vaccines under the School Immunisation Program, your child must be

enrolled in Years 8, 10 or 11. Home-schooled children are also eligible to receive the recommended vaccines free.

Vaccines for 2019: Year 8—Human papillomavirus HPV vaccine, Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis)

vaccines. Year 10 -Meningococcal B vaccine, Meningococcal ACWY vaccine, Year 11—Meningococcal B vaccine

For more information on the School Immunisation Program, see the School Immunisation Program: FAQ or contact

your doctor or immunisation provider.

School News Year 8 Pt Vincent Aquatics Camp

The annual Year 8 Aquatics Camp was held last week from Wednesday 20th – Friday 22nd February at Port Vincent. Students were treated to superb weather, learning the essentials of water safety and partaking in kayaking and windsurfing on the first day.

Day two involved the popular Berry Bay adventure, which included a full day of surfing and body boarding. Once again, conditions were sensational and perfect for learning the fundamentals of surfing. Dolphins swam nearby during the day and our students could not get enough of being in the water and developing their skills. Our evening activity included fishing off the jetty at Port Vincent.

After an early start on the final day, students were fortunate to try their hand at sailing and knee boarding before we packed up the bus and headed for home. Students are to be commended on their excellent behaviour and fantastic participation rate in all aquatic activities.

The Year 7/8A class contributed to the catering component of this camp, having prepared delicious lasagnes with Mrs Seidel in the Home Economics Centre prior to departure. Thank you to all families who supplied a range of fruit and homemade delicacies of cakes and biscuits for morning and afternoon tea each day.

It is always a positive experience for students to have a go at new activities, grow in confidence and strengthen friendships with their peers while on school camp. A huge thank you must go to Margo Sismey and Craig Roberts for assisting in all facets of this camp, and especially for driving us safely throughout the trip.
