Liebe Leserinnen und Leser Mit dem einsetzenden Regen haben wir in der Botschaft auch besonderen Besuch erhalten. Eine schöne mehr als 2 Meter lange Netzpython hat sich im Garten vergnügt und konnte vom Gärtner eingefangen werden, bevor die Besucher am Visaschalter eintrafen. Ein Höhepunkt im Mai war unser Charity-Bazar in der Residenz vom 28. Mai 2011. Darüber werden wir in der nächsten Ausgabe ausführlich berichten, wenn wir die Fotos entwickelt und die Abrechnung gemacht haben. Un thaïlandais reçoit la médaille d’or au Salon des Inventions de Genève Le Dr. Boonyaporn Yeemee a remporté la médaille d’or à l’occasion du 39ème Salon des Inventions de

Genève qui s’est tenu du 6 au 10 avril 2011 à Palexpo.

Le Dr. Yeemee, est le premier thaïlandais à avoir remporté un tel prix à l’occasion de ce salon de

renommée mondiale qui rassemble plus de 1000 inventions et produits nouveaux, 785 exposants de 45

pays, 60'000 visiteurs de tous les continents et près de 650 journalistes.

Il a remporté ce prix grâce à son produit appelé DYNAMIC, un médicament constitué à base d’extraits de

jaunes d’œufs et de fruit de bael, un fruit cultivé en Thaïlande et communément utilisé dans la médecine

traditionnelle thaï. Ce produit contient d’autre part des acides gras essentiels tels que les Oméga-3, de la

lécithine, de la choline et est totalement dépourvu de toute substance chimique.

Des tests cliniques menés sur une durée de 5 ans ont démontré les vertus curatives de ce médicament

contre certaines maladies chroniques mais également contre l’Alzheimer et autres troubles de la mémoire,

les maladies touchant les nerfs, les allergies ainsi que les inflammations.

Le Dr. Yeemee a affirmé que, bien qu’il ait déjà reçu de nombreux autres prix lors de différents Salons de

l’Invention en Asie, tels que celui de Séoul par exemple, la médaille d’or reçue à Genève comporte pour lui

une signification toute particulière. En effet, par ce biais, il souhaiterait faire passer le message suivant aux

touristes, visiteurs ou autres expatriés occidentaux: la médecine traditionnelle thaïlandaise ne se résume

pas aux massages thaïs. La Thaïlande dispose également d’un savoir-faire qui a fait ses preuves en

matière de médecine traditionnelle, basé sur des produits de composantes 100% organiques. Il est

important de faire connaître et de diffuser ce savoir-faire. Celui-ci est un complément à la médecine

« dure » et ne vise pas à guérir le corps de manière ponctuel, mais à l’aider à résoudre les problèmes par

lui-même, sans médicaments chimiques, afin d’améliorer la santé de manière générale et sur le long

terme.

Actuellement, son médicament est produit dans sa propre usine et n’est disponible que sur le marché

thaïlandais. Cependant, le Dr. Yeemee envisage de le commercialiser prochainement à plus large échelle

sur le marché asiatique. En effet selon lui, la société asiatique, désenchantée par certains échecs de la

médecine en matière de maladies chroniques notamment, tendrait à se diriger de plus en plus vers les

alternatives offertes par la médecine traditionnelle, amorçant ainsi une certaine résurgence de celle-ci.

De son propre aveu, le Dr. Yeemee a affirmé être reconnaissant envers le Salon de Genève d’encourager

l’innovation thaïlandaise et sa diffusion en matière de médecine traditionnelle.

Schweizerische Tätigkeiten in Thailand

Botschafterin Schraner Burgener auf Besuch im Isaan

Am 22. und 23. Mai besuchte die Schweizer Botschafterin die vom Schweizer Claudio Romano geleitete

Stiftung „Sainam“ in Rattanaburi (in der Nähe von Surin). Die Schweizer Botschaft hat dort die neue

Reismühle gestiftet.

Dieses Mal ging es darum, dem Thai-Fernsehen TV5 die Stiftung vorzustellen (Ausstrahlung im August).

Mit dabei waren auch Dr. Supong Limtanakol von der Bangkok Univerisity, dessen Studenten einen

Hühnerstall für das Dorf zimmerten. Nebst Besuchen von Schulen und Plantagen durfte die Botschafterin

den Bauern beim Säen des Reises helfen.

the Embassy to support a project that will bring Migrant Workers a Drop-In center for Migrant Workers

from Myanmar to provide health and labour rights at Talad Simummuang.

Swiss, US support drive to reduce newborn mortality rates in Laos from the Vientiane Times, 31 March 2011, by Times R eporters

The Swiss-Laos Health Project and the East Meets West Foundation continue to train health officials on the

effective use of medical equipment in an effort to reduce birthing mortality rates in Laos. Vice President of

the project Dr Marion Monkhoff said on Friday that the equipment, worth more than 8 billion kip (US$1

million), donated by the project last week should be used in an effective way. She added that some years

ago a non-government organization donated medical equipment to a hospital in the north of the country,

but failed to train doctors and nurses how to use it. Consequently the equipment was not used and the

donation went to waste. “We want to avoid such problems because we realize that equipment will not be

useful if doctors and nurses don’t know how to use it properly,” said Dr Monkhoff. The “Breath of Life”

training course completes a process that involved assessment of hospital newborn care requirements,

donation of appropriate equipment, training and follow-up visits to each of the target hospitals and careful

ongoing monitoring of the program. “Many hospitals in developing countries suffer from the same

problems,” said Program Manager of the Breath of Life program of East Meets West in Laos Dr Dan

Fitzpatrick.

“Newborn care equipment from Western countries is very complicated, needs regular servicing, is not

suitable for the rugged conditions found in many developing countries and requires the use of expensive

consumables.” East Meets West donates a range of equipment depending on the newborn care

requirements of each hospital it works with. These include CPAP

machines for use with newborn babies who have persistent breathing

difficulties, phototherapy machines for newborns with jaundice and

open warmers which are especially useful for the care of preterm

babies. “Of course East Meets West does not merely operate in a

vacuum,” commented Dr Fitzpatrick. “Our aim in all the countries we

work in is not to re-invent the wheel but to utilize what is already in

place and to form partnerships with other organizations so as to

maximize the effects of our projects.” Dr Marion Monkhoff (third left) explains

"When we first arrived in Vientiane, we found that the Swiss-Lao Hospital Project had already worked to set

up a newborn intensive care unit at the Mother and Child Health Hospital,” commented Dr Fitzpatrick. “This

allowed us the leverage to use the unit as a newborn care training centre for doctors and nurses from

provincial hospitals.” Training course participants came from the Mahosot, Setthathirath and Mother and

Child Health hospitals. Health staff from the provincial hospitals of Huaphan, Luang Prabang, Xayaboury,

Luang Namtha, Vientiane, Xieng Khuang and Champassak also attended the training.

Switzerland is set to help Laos increase its exports of clean products to reduce reliance on export income from natural resources which will one day be exhausted. Switzerland also plans to help Laos develop a sustainablethe tourism sector, one of the clean and greeneconomy and a major foreign exchange earner. Der Künstler Rirkrit Tiravanija und die 100 Tonson Gallery Bangkok werden dieses Jahr die einzigen Teilnehmer aus Südostasien sein. Eine beachtliche Leistung, denn die Plätze an diesem prestigiösesten aller Kunstevents sind begehrt und beschränkt. Botschafterin Christine Schraner Burgener gab am 31. Mai in ihrer Residenz den thailändischen Medien diese gute Nachricht bekannt. Die Bedeutung dieser Teilnahme und was Thailand im Bereich der Kunst noch alles zu bieten hat, darüber informierten von kompetenter Seite Khun Ek-Anong Phanachet, Direktorin der 100 Tonson Gallery und Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, Generaldirektor des Departements für Kulturförderung im thailändischen Kulturministerium. Der thailändische Performance-Künstler Rirkrit Tiravanija (*1961) ist einer der wichtigsten Exponenten seiner Kunstgattung in Asien. Er weilt gegenwärtig in den USA. In Basel wird er sein Konzept seiner letztjährigen Ausstellung in der Tonson Gallery, „Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Green?“ weiterführen. Neben den grossflächigen Freskos ist auch für die Verköstigung der Besucher mit thailändischer Küche gesorgt – zubereitet vom Künstler persönlich! (Ab-)Tauchen in Myanmar Noch ist Myanmar vornehmlich aufgrund der politischen Rahmenbedingungen und der massiven Verletzungen der Menschenrechte im Gespräch. Immer mehr mausert sich dieses Land zur beliebten Tourismusdestination. Auch Schweizerinnen und Schweizer sind in diesem Bereich tätig. Wir haben im letzten Newsletter das von Schweizern betriebene Restaurant „Le Planteur“ vorgestellt. Heute stellen wir Ihnen Doris Oswald und Martin Sigrist vor, die sich auf einer Insel auf myanmarischem Territorium nieder gelassen haben. Sie sind auf der Macleod Island tätig. Wo liegt die se geheimnisvolle Insel?

Unsere paradiesische Insel mit dem burmesischen Namen Khayinkwa liegt als einzig bewohnte Insel mit

einer Fläche von ca. 25 qkm2 im Mergui Archipel 10‘09’04.81N – 97‘58‘3317E, inmitten von weiteren ca. 600

unbewohnten Inseln. Das Resort mit insgesamt 22 Bungalows, davon 8 Suiten direkt am 800m langen,

weissen Sandstrand gelegen und 14 Superior Bungalows wurde im Jahre 2004 unter burmesischer

Bauherrschaft eröffnet.

Unser Grundgedanke war, unseren Landsleuten, deren Familien und Freunden eine neue Destination zu

präsentieren, die innert einer Tagesreise ab Bangkok und Umgebung problemlos zu erreichen ist. Wir leiten

im Namen von Extradivers Worldwide das Resort mit Tauchcenter.

Seit wann sind Sie dort tätig und wie kamen sie auf diese Idee?

Wir beide haben die CH im Jahre 2000 verlassen. Unsere erste Auslandsdestination war Khao Lak, wo wir

bei einem Schweizer Kollegen die ersten Erfahrungen als Tauchlehrer sammelten. Danach zog es uns für 3

Jahre nach Aegypten zu Extradivers Worldwide. Als unser Chef, Herr Walter Harscher, die erste Tauchbasis

mit Hotelanlage im Oman eröffnete, wurde uns die Möglichkeit zum Aufbau dieser Anlage angeboten.

Während unserer 2 Jahre im Sultanat wurden weitere 3 Basen in diesem exotischen Land eröffnet. Nach 5

Jahren Wüste zog es uns allerdings wieder zurück in tropische Gefilde. Walter Harscher, immer auf der

Suche nach unberührten Tauchgebieten übernahm das Nabucco’s Andaman Resort im Jahre 2007 und wir

ab 2008 die Gesamtleitung.

Wie gelangt man auf diese Insel?

2 x wöchentlich bieten wir Sammeltransfers ab Phuket Airport auf die Insel. Die Fahrt per Minibus bis

Ranong dauert ca. 4 Std. Von der Sampanpla Jetty Ranong bringt das resorteigene, überdachte Longtail die



Gäste nach Kawthaung (Viktoriapoint). Mit unserem Speedboot ca. 2 Fahrstunden geht’s dann weiter auf

Macleod Island. Es muss darauf geachtet werden, dass der Flug nicht später als 10 Uhr in Phuket landet um

die Insel innerhalb desselben Tages zu erreichen. Die Thai Immigration in Ranong schliesst um 16:30 Uhr.

Die Anreise kann ebenfalls mit eigenem Auto, Taxi oder VIP-Nachtbus ab Bangkok bis Ranong in Eigenregie

erfolgen.

Was bieten Sie dort den Gästen an?

80 % unserer Gäste sind Taucher, die das Besondere suchen. Die Unterwasserwelt ist unberührt und ein

Grossteil der Riffe bisher unerforscht. Dies sind ideale Voraussetzungen für Taucher mit Pioniergeist, die

Neues entdecken möchten. Der Artenreichtum und die Vielfalt sind kaum zu übertreffen. Tauchen fernab der

Massen ist garantiert. Martin und ich sind beide Tauchlehrer mit 6‘000 resp. 4‘500 absolvierten Tauchgängen

und wir freuen uns immer wieder, wenn wir neue Kunden nach PADI Standard ausbilden dürfen. Es kann

jedoch auch geschnorchelt werden, jederzeit am Hausriff oder als Begleitung der Taucher bei deren

Ausfahrten. Sightseeing Touren rund um die Insel oder Trekking auf den Aussichtspunkt sind weitere

Betätigungsmöglichkeiten. Daneben bieten wir Massagen, Manicure oder Pedicure. Ein Blick auf die

Was waren die grössten Schwierigkeiten, um in Myanm ar einen solchen Betrieb auf die Beine zu

stellen?

Unsere Anfangsschwierigkeiten lagen in der Logistik. Wir müssen sämtliche Nahrungsmittel, Non-food, Gas,

Treibstoffe etc. per Boot auf die Insel bringen. Inzwischen sind wir jedoch sehr gut organisiert. Unser Fahrer,

der die Leute von Phuket nach Ranong bringt kennen wir mittlerweile 10 Jahre, unser burmesischer Agent

der für die Pass- & Visaformalitäten sowie den Einkauf zuständig ist macht einen super Job und unsere

burmesischen Mitarbeiter auf der Insel stehen uns seit 3 Jahren treu zur Seite.
