Pastor’s pen

I sometimes find myself ask-ing questions like these: is faith just a warm blanket to keeps us warm on cold nights? Why do we Jesus-followers have the Old Testament taking up the first ¾ of our Bibles? How do we know what God is really like? Why is there so much injustice in the world? What’s the solution to the world’s problems? What’s our purpose? What is the church really for?

Christian theology isn’t pie in the sky; rather, Christian-ity tells a story that seeks to make intellectual sense of these ques-tions. Starting Sunday, January 11

th, Chad and I will be exploring

the basic Christian understanding of the world in order to: 1. Build up life-long Christians. 2. Empower you to explain your faith with non-Christian friends

in loving and rational ways. 3. Reveal Jesus to spiritual-seekers.

Grace & peace,

Pastor Andrew

Chad and Kimberly Zachrison and their two sons, Eddie & Tanis. Please join us for a Pot Luck on

January 4th after Chad’s first official Sunday in the pulpit.

********************************************** Hello, my name is Chad Zachrison. I am the new Associate in Ministry here at First Presbyterian Church. I am a graduate of Sioux Falls Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. I grew up in the United Methodist Tradition so I still have some things to learn about how the Presbyterian Church works. I have already learned one thing and I learned that the first Sunday that I came to worship. This is a very inviting church. My wife and I have been made to feel very welcomed in to this church. We feel blessed that you have allowed us to become a part of your community. My wife, Kimberly, and I have two boys Edward (Eddie), age 7, and Talanthalis (Tanis), age 3. Eddie is a second grader at Madi-son Elementary and Tanis spends his days at daycare. Kimberly is a Beadle County Deputy State’s Attorney. She deals with Domestic Vio-lence, Sexual Assault and Stalking for eleven counties in Central South Dakota. I am willing to bet that some of you are wondering what an Associate in Ministry does. I can tell you that they do whatever the pastor tells them to do. I will be doing some preaching and teaching and you may even see me knocking on your door and getting to know you. I am working hard to find ways to help this congregation grow in both faith but also grow closer together as a community of faith. Starting on January 8th at Noon I will be starting a book study. We will be studying the book Loving the way Jesus Loves by Phil Ryken. It is a twelve week course that deals with 1 Corinthians 13 also known as the Love verse. It will be 45 minutes to an hour long. Bring your own lunch and spend some time in the middle of your day in fellowship with each other and the Lord. All are welcome but I would like to specifically invite working adults who need some time spent during the week with other adults that they don’t work with. I know that there are a lot of people in this community that

would love to have a small group study to go to but they don’t know

when they would find the time. All of the activities in both your and

your children’s lives pretty much take up all of your time and that is

perfectly understandable. I think that this could interest you.

Member Highlights

Idel McDonald Idel Beals McDonald was raised in Harlingen Texas. Her siblings; sis-ter, Eleanor Smitherman now lives in Springdale AR., brother Duane is in Wolsey, twin brother, Varner, is in Fairfax SD, and her other sister, Judy Harder, is in Lincoln NE. After graduating from Harlingen High School Idel was employed as a clerk/typist at the Air Force Base. It was there that she met George McDonald. They were mar-ried in 1953 and 6 weeks later he was sent to Ko-rea. After 4 years in the Air Force he returned home and began raising queen bees. As a profes-sional bee keeper they moved from Texas, spent four years in Minnesota and then moved to Wol-sey in 1958. Every year George would spend two months in Texas raising the queen bees. After 46 years in his chosen occupation George retired. He enjoyed being creative in woodworking, being a carpenter and a mechanic. Among other interesting wooden items, he made five beautiful Grandfather Clocks, one for Idel and one for each of his four daughters. The couple also spent time traveling in their RV. He passed away in 2007. George and Idel had four daughters. Artie (Kevin) Reilly lives in Wol-sey and is a cook for the Wolsey School. They have two sons, Matt and Dusty. Sharlotte Hines lives in Huron and works at the Coborn Deli. Her husband, Philip, passed away of a heart attack in December, 2013. Their twin sons are Arron and Adam. Maureen (Kurt) Dubois lives in rural Wolsey. They have two daughters, Gena and Dana. She is also a cook for the Wolsey School. Teresa (Danny) Edwards lives in Rock Springs WY. where she is an Elementary School counselor. They have a daugh-ter, Morgan. Idel has always been very family oriented and is very close to her daughters. Her home was always open to the girls' friends who frequently stopped over after school for cookies, as well as her Brownie and Girl Scout Troupe. She loves her grandchildren and is thankful that so many of them are near. About ten years ago Idel started losing her eyesight. It isn't easy for an active, outgoing person to become visually impaired. But she made the best of it, still active in community clubs, the American Legion Auxil-iary and the Sr. Center. She was a fifty year member of the Presbyterian Church in Wolsey. In June of 2013 Idel moved to SunQuest Village in Huron and joined the Presbyterian Church here in 2014. Still a close friend of Peggy Mueller, who lived across the street in Wolsey, she en-joys their visits and all of the new friends at The Village. She also spends time going to the nursing home to visit people

We’ve Got Mail I want to thank everyone for the flowers, cards, inquires & prayers in the last couple months. I’m doing very well & the Lord is with me. I don’t have to have any treatments of any kind. Just a pill. Thanks again to all. Donna Meiers Thank You all so much for the care package that you guys sent me. It means a great deal and really anything from home helps boost morale this time of year. It got to me in less than two weeks, which may sound like a long time, but it is the quickest I have gotten any piece of mail delivered to me. Thank you again. Yours in Christ, SPC Pace Clayton Thank you so much for the beautiful poinsettia plant! I love it, it brightens up my place. With Love Idel McDonald.
