Dear friends,

Arriving in El Salvador last July we found a dispirited population in Joya Grande. People were beginning to adjust to their material and human losses after IDA (Nov 2009) when AGATHA struck (June 2010). This caused further devastation for the people and the project. Some offi cials and the press identifi ed the area as uninhabitable yet most people were reluctant to leave. They had a stake in their community and an established network. Besides, they had nowhere to go.

So began the hard work of rebuilding, restructuring, refreshing the facilities, and refocusing on what we had all hoped to achieve through the programs.

Although we were able to get the education and health programs back on track, the bakery did not survive. The storms and the economic crisis forced several workers to relocate to other parts of the country leaving the bakery unable to continue.

At HRF, we concentrated our resources on health and education with special attention to EDUCASA and the infant and pre-school education program. The Ministry of Education is now emphasizing the importance of early education, and we are pleased to be the forerunners of this development.

In addition, we have been invited to introduce our educational program to a large community of greater San Salvador. This is an exciting opportunity to expand services into different areas of the country.

We are grateful for your past support and hope you will continue to include the Hilda Rothschild Foundation in your contribution plans. Please remember that 100 cents to the dollar goes directly to the programs (many of us donate our work).

Every child that you help educate is one less adolescent who may join a gang or participate in this widespread violence that threatens all of our lives.

Best wishes for 2011!

Greetings from HRF!

2010 was a diffi cult year. e storms and the economic crisis certainly had an impact on the people of Joya Grande and surrounding communities where HRF operates. Nevertheless we achieved many things this year.

e work that was begun took a new turn. We accomplished new levels of professionalism and commitment. e workers who opted to stay in Joya Grande remain adamant and vigorous about fi nding solutions to the problems they face.

EDUCATION

is year HRF was able to open its doors to even more children. e school and its classrooms welcomed students from neighboring communities. Children traveled long distances to attend the program. Parents chose to travel to the HRF program as the community recognizes that children attending have better social skills and are better prepared for the next level of education. At a meeting held with the local board directors, one of the members said, “You can see the diff erence between children who go to your school and those who don’t, they are more mature and know more.”

anks to a generous donation from Dallas Montessori schools, old material was replaced and new materials were acquired for the classrooms.

EDUCASA

e EDUCASA program was another highlight of this year’s education activities. is year the program worked with over 50 families. e home visitors write excitedly about the family’s progress and report the great pride parents take in their accomplishments. EDUCASA has a great potential for helping eradicate illiteracy among the poor.

WORKSHOPS

Art education is an important fi eld because it gives people the possibility of expressing themselves in a diff erent way. HRF was thrilled to off er a dynamic art workshop to the women given by a well-known Salvadoran artist. It was interesting to see the emergence of hidden talent among the women.

SPECIAL FUNDRAISING EVENT

We are so very proud to share the great fundraising action organized by Julia Goldstein who is 11 years old and lives in Harrison, New York. She was impressed by the poverty she saw when she worked at HRF last year and inspired her sister Sofi a and many classmates to do a fundraising event for HRF. Dressed in bright yellow T-shirts and armed with posters, Julia and her friends managed to raise $1,800 in one day!

e event was covered by the local press.

Volunteers, volunteeers!

2010 surely qualifi es as “the Year of the Volunteer” at HRF. We received so many requests from people who are eager to help and “give back”. e increase of applications for volunteer positions proves to us that the work a HRF is being recognized.

Unfortunately, we can’t welcome all the volunteers who want to come and join us due to limited housing.

A special THANKS to all those who helped and volunteered in 2010

• Drs. Aviva and Omer Gal ophtalmologists, for an enormous gift to the people of Joya Grande and surrounding areas.

• Emma Calderon Wolff for dedicated work in the bakery and generous input to HRF.

• Emma Fullwinder and Sofi a Weir Montessori Program volunteers, for enriching the program and obtaining a large donation of materials in Dallas.

• Licry Bicard, for leading a lively art workshop

• Cathy Coopman, for making a video of HRF and promoting the Foundation in France.
