Fowey River Academy Students Play

At Lantern Parade

FRA: Principal’s Report

Dear All,

Many thanks to everyone for making this such a successful term and a sign of all

the hard work that is being put into transforming Fowey River Academy back to its

outstanding best is that people are ready for a well-earned break!

Both staff and students have been pulling out all the stops to

change the culture and climate so that what we do, and how it

feels, has real impact on raising standards.

Last week we were able to host the Year 11 GCSE Celebration

Evening and it was a real pleasure to welcome back so many familiar faces and to

present awards and certificates to so many students who achieved exceptional

results. It is always a key moment of the school year as it is a poignant reminder of

how hard schools across the country work for young people to give them the best

possible life chances. Since the evening a number of parents have contacted me to

pass on their thanks to our dedicated staff and so I would like to pass that on here.

A reminder that Tuesday 3rd January 2017 is an INSET day and students return to

school for the new year on Wednesday 4th January 2017.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas,

Mr Dale

This week, half of Science is Geek decided to try their hand (thanks to the Crunch) at genetic engineering. It is a scientific fact that the world has prob-lems providing enough food for its growing population, and it will only get worse unless the scientists of the future (like us!) can find solutions to this problem. Genetic engineering could be a possible solution. Tomatoes are al-ready engineered to make them stay fresher for longer, corn to be resistant to pests and potatoes to be resistant to tobacco mosaic virus.

We are attempting to modify E. coli, with a gene from a jellyfish (The E. coli has already been modified to make it non-pathogenic, meaning it cannot cause an illness). The first step is to grow the bacteria, which we did by sterilis-ing our inoculating loops and after dipping in the bacteria and nutrient broth solution streaking the plates. This is making a square around the edge of the plate, and then a squiggle down the middle!

Once the bacteria have grown next week we will add the glow in the dark jelly-fish gene

Science is Geek - Part 1 Report by Miss Davies

Hi Miss,

I am absolutely over the moon to tell you that I have been offered a place at

university. I will be studying at BIMM (British & Irish Institute Of Modern Music)

Brighton to study Songwriting! I just wanted to thank you for the support you

gave me throughout secondary. I strongly believe if you didn't motivate me and

believe in me I would not be where I am today. A close friend of mine has

offered to record my album and I have already spent time in the studio working

on my songs. I will always be grateful for your influence and never giving up on

me. I love music and always will. Thank you endlessly.

Best Wishes,

Amelia-Loveday Bamsey :)

Festive Weekend in Fowey Report by Miss Attwood

Students from Fowey River Academy participat-ed in a range of Christmas performances over the weekend. To kick off the festivities we had the Samba band performing in the lan-terns parade through Fowey town on Friday night, which culminated in the lights being switched on by Santa outside the church.

On Saturday the new Fowey River Choir had their debut performance sing-ing Silent Night and Christmas Mash Up at the Christmas Market totally un-accompanied. The pouring rain didn't put them off and their performance was outstanding, with a beautiful solo from Katie Jordan in Silent Night.

On Sunday the Year 11 Band had their final performance together which was an ar-rangement of Merry Christmas Every-one with Lydia Virr on vocals, Hannah Ab-biss on bass guitar, Lillie Bamsey on trum-pet 1, Maddie Macdonald on trumpet 2, Emma de Grey Warter on keys 1 and Lau-ren James on keys 2. It was a really enjoya-ble performance to finish the Christmas Market festivities.

On Sunday evening the weekend drew to a close with the Fowey Town Carol service. Our students performed an accapella version of Away in a Manger, with a stunning solo from Caitlyn Matthews. We also joined the Fowey River Singers to perform The First Nowell.

I would like to say a massive well done to all of the students involved this weekend. Your commitment and hard work has really paid off and I look forward to doing it all again next year!

Year 7 Creative homework task Report by Mrs Smith

Mrs Smith challenged her Year 7 PE class to come up with a creative and innovative way of showing what they had learnt in their gymnastics lessons. They had 1 week to pro-duce the work which they presented to Mrs Smith and Mrs Davey during their PE lesson, explain what they had created, their inspiration behind the work and how it reflected their learning.

The pupils truly rose to the challenge and produced some truly inspirational, outstand-ing and mastery level work which, including cakes in the shape of gymnastic balances, magazine articles, books, and art work.
