The Sunshine Coast Arts Council, a non-profit volunteer-based organization supports the arts in our coast-wide community and operates the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. The facility includes a community gallery and a performance space, and art and music studios.

Assistance is received from volunteers who contribute their time and energy, working on all our programs. We also benefit from the assistance of the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Sunshine Coast Regional District, the District of Sechelt, and we acknowledge the financial assistance of the Government of British Columbia. We are also supported by the generosity of our members and donors, along with those who attend and support our fundraising events and our programs.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ExEcuTivE diREcTOR

Dear artistry Readers—

When will the snow stop? The garden committee tried to have a spring meeting the other day to talk about spring work, but the sudden snowfall had pretty much covered everything up.

We are paying a lot of attention to a whole variety of things around the Arts Council and the Arts Centre these days. Grants are getting written and submitted. We’ve begun to work on a joint project with the Coast Cultural Alliance [CCA], which will provide the ARts Council, the CCA and eventually other arts and culture organizations on the Coast with information about the importance of the contributions made to our community life by artists and the arts.

We’re working with Kevin McEvoy on plans for classes and an art camp in July—more about that will be announced in future issues of artistry.

Thanks to work done by Sandy Beresford, and her recommendation of software, we’ve been able to computerize our rental, event & exhibition schedule. This is mak-ing some of the work that Sandy and Yani are responsible for much easier to manage. If you have events, concerts, family gatherings, weddings, meetings, lectures, or any other event which would fit in the Arts Centre, please telephone, and learn about our affordable rates and additional amenities.

You may receive a telephone call in the next weeks from a volunteer calling on behalf of the Arts Council to seek renewal of your Membership for 2009. There are many benefits to membership, including lower rental rates for facilities in the Arts Centre and including required public liability coverage.

If you are an artist, artisan or craftsperson, you’ll want to know that this issue of artistry includes the Entry Form and Letter for the 22nd Annual Hackett Park Summer Arts & Crafts Fair, to be held August 15 & 16, this summer, on the same weekend as the Festival of the Written Arts. If you know people who might be interested, please pass along the application or let them know it’s available on our website at www.scartscouncil.com.

The Young People’s Own Show Elementary & Secondary sections will be on the walls in late April and May. We encourage you all to visit the Doris Crowston Gallery during those shows, and enjoy the visual art of students in all the schools on the Coast.

Be in touch if there’s anything you’d like to say about artistry, or our work here at the Sunshine Coast Arts Council. Please support the arts organizations you read about here, and in the publications available on the Coast. In difficult times the arts will warm your heart, change your mind, and keep you going!

Frances Wasserlein, Executive Director Sunshine Coast Arts Council & Arts Centre

The Arts Centre relies almost exclusively on volunteers. There are opportunities to staff the Gallery, assist with events, join the gardening committee, help with mailing the artistry newsletter, and many others.

Currently we have an immediate need for more gallery sitters. This duty involves greeting visitors, answering ques-

tions about the Centre and taking mem-berships. There are two 2½-hour shifts each day from Wednesday to Saturday: 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.–4 p.m.

Please call us at 604-885-5412 or e-mail us at [email protected] and join us in keeping this important Coast icon dynamic and vibrant. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Bc FERRiES Wind FESTivAl WinS critical approval

Saturday, Feb. 7 and Sunday, Feb. 8 marked the third anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Music Society’s BC Ferries Festival of Wind Music. Debut performances by a quintet—bassoon, clarinet, flute, French horn and oboe play-ing mostly classical music—and Coast Jazz Septet—newly minted by trumpeter John Frederickson from the Coast’s fin-est jazz men—were critically acclaimed in the Coast Reporter February 13, 2009: “Coast Ensembles: fine local music.”

SCMS invites a visiting band for

entertainment, variety and to comple-ment local performances. The Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble came in 2007. The Little Mountain Brass Band followed in 2008, both to enthusiastic applause.

The Delta Concert Band were equal-ly well received. “A delight to hear ‘The Symphonic Gershwin’ played so well” said one long-time member of the local concert band. All of the Delta’s selections were much enhanced by music director James Tempest;s amusing anecdotes and informative capsule comments.

My own favourite was Samuel Barber’s “Sure on this shining night,” which filled the auditorium with a glorious wash of brass and wood-wind colours. “Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik” was lots of klesmer fun that got a handful of local community

orchestra players hoping to add it to their repertoire.

With xylophone and vibraphone and a large battery of smaller paraphernalia to handle, Cheryl McHugh was surely the busiest of the 35-member band. She is one of several Delta players who are currently professional musicians, or retirees like William Hastings, trumpet (ex navy Naden band) and John Fisher, French horn, (a drum major ex army band}. They have known one another 42 years and were part of a great Armed Forces Tattoo in 1967.

The youngest band member was Shannon Sibbald, a brilliant clarinetist now in Grade 11. It’s a pity she was the only one—not a single local student came to this excellent concert.

The longest running festival on the Coast returns this spring with an excel-lent program.

Talented musicians and artists of all ages will perform at the 36th annual Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts. The festival starts April 20 with a week of piano performances at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. Award-winning performances are showcased at the 2009 Piano Encore Concert on Sunday, April 26 at the Centre.

The Coast Festival is similar to the Kiwanis Music Festival in other commu-nities. It’s outstanding entertainment, and it also provides opportunities for Coast students and amateur perform-ing artists and musicians to perform and receive guidance from professional adjudicators.

The following two weeks feature a variety of performers, ensembles, bands and choirs. Events are held at the Arts Centre, Chatelech Theatre and the Gibsons Heritage Playhouse. For detailed information, see the Festival website at www.coastfestival.com In early April, the Festival 2009 program will be available at Sew Much More, Gibsons, Talewind Books, Sechelt, MeloMANIA, Roberts Creek, and Miss Sunny’s Hair Boutique, Madeira Park.

The Festival concludes with a popu-lar Highlights Concert on Sunday, May 10 at Raven’s Cry Theatre. The concert features award-winning performances and is sponsored by the Coast Recital Society. Admission is by donation.

The Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts Society has charitable

status and relies on the support of com-munity donors, volunteers and Society members for this annual event. With sponsorship from generous local corpo-rate and individual donors, outstanding individuals and groups will receive over $6,000 in awards and scholarships to encourage their artistic development.

Sunshine Coast Credit Union schol-arships assist talented young performers to finance post-secondary education. Exceptional performers selected by adju-dicators will receive Sunshine Coast Arts Council support to participate in this year’s provincial Performing Arts BC Festival.

Attend Festival 2009 and enjoy our 36th year of exceptional performances!

Sunshine Coast Ceramic Artists

are invited to submit work for Ceramics on the Edge, a juried show of ceramic work that will be

east to Egmont and Earle’s Cove in the north.

Two categories—established artists and emerging artists—will be judged separately, with the best of each category selected for inclusion in the show. Each artist

As well as objects that can be displayed on plinths, artists are encouraged to submit work such as masks,
